+Cooking With Jack Show The Subway/Starbucks proximity is a move by one of the chain to skip on market research. My guess is that Subway let's Starbucks do the hard work and spending needed to identify good locations. Subway has low overhead for opening a new franchise and had a very aggressive expansion. Stores popped up everywhere without proper market research. Since Starbuck are known to have a good planning and expertise in that area Subway rides along and just rent the cheapest adequate location near every Starbucks. Very few fail and the one that fails still recoup the market research cost they would have payed. Usually they'll just keep the franchise licence and relocate. Starbucks on the other hand have high overhead for a new franchise, think décor, branding, furnitures etc.. and are harder to relocate. That's why their market research is valued by other chains.
Come On Really? The science of what this guy was doing has to be explained to you??? He was doing a sandwich comparison based on actual components condiments have no place in the social experimental comparison. He did not buy these for consumption.
The deli on the corner of my street sells jamaican beef paties with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, on 2 giant slices of cocoa bread for $3.50 and it makes more money then the subway up the block
Will Taylor The truth is, these places are mostly hit or miss, which is why they should be relied through review and word of mouth. I stopped at a Mexican food kitchen joint with a friend one time in Brooklyn. Possibly the worst burrito I ever had was there, that the chicken tasted so off. It wasn't that much cheaper than say Chipotle either, it was a 7 dollar burrito. At least with chains, you get a sense of consistency.
+Miami Storm Column Exactly, if it weren't for the fact that I know exactly what I'm getting and for the fact that chains have a better track record on food safety procedures I would not eat there. There's also the fast in fast food that beats most mom and pop restaurant. Very disappointing when you're in a pinch and hungry to get something you didn't expect.
Ozzdoc But in sweden you'll have to throw 1/3rd of your wage down the drain as we have about 33% taxes here. And what do you think the money goes to? sverigesradio.se/sida/artikel.aspx?programid=2054&artikel=5440019 2 years later it's still there and has only been turned on twice.
hataskane I live in USA Georgia, my taxes is 30% of my check goes to state taxes and about 5-10% goes to federal. I make minimum wage which is why I sometimes only get 5% taken out in federal taxes. State though is a dead even 30%, when I lived in Arizona I was able to get my state taxes eliminated completely because I made less than a certain amount. So what I'm saying is that it matters where you live. Some states are really good about taxes, others will drain you dry. By the way, minimum wage is 7.25 an hour as established by the federal government. States can opt to pay more but I think only one, maybe two states have paid 10 dollars or more an hour.
Compared to that deli sandwich he got? Not even close. That one he got could easily satisfy two hungry adults, at a cost of $4 each, and each of them would still be getting more sandwich (and fresher ingredients) than the Subway foot-long. I'm a regular visitor to Subway, but I don't think it did well here at all. Sad for me that there's nowhere like that deli near me :(
Theres nothing wtf about that, that's what people do in real life, you people are obviously too concerned with others think and have zero self confidence
Staters definitely does make a quality sandwich and have a massive array of toppings you can get as well, I've gotten a lot of them ever since watching this video and the sub dressing they have is fantastic. I don't get sandwiches from anywhere else now, you get way more than enough and it tastes great even as left overs. I get the dressing on the side and keep the sandwich dry like Jack because you get so much of it you're going to have some left over
So $5 for a subway foot long, $6 for a quiznos 11 inch sub, and $8 for stater bros sub sandwich? I would go with the super market sub, because the fact that if you get the meal for the other two subs meaning a drink and small bag of chips it would come out to the same amount as the stater bros sub. So based on the price for the quantity I would definitely go with the supermarket sub. Thats just my opinion though.
I also live in Southern California, so I know exactly what you mean about Subway and Starbucks, SO TRUE!! There are three Subways that are close to me, all within a few minutes drive of each other and two of them have a Starbucks either next store or in the same plaza/area. Also, I used to live in Riverside, CA and on the corner of the street that my apartment was on, there was a Subway and Starbucks exactly right next to each other.. This is crazy wow, I wonder why it's like this with most of the Subways/Starbucks.. at least in California. Although I've noticed more that if I spot a Subway, there is usually a Starbucks super close by, but there isn't always a Subway when I spot a Starbucks lol.. Anyway Cooking With Jack Show I enjoy you're videos and you make food prep and cooking seem so much easier and simpler than one may see it as.. So thanks for that.. I'll definitely give your lazy man recipes a try on my own sometime, seem super efficient and quick.. Thanks Jack, and adiós for now! :)
GREAT VIDEO; Im a long time small business owner and here are the facts folks... Dollar for Dollar Stater Bros comes out on top. Much more bang for the buck as you stated this is a family mean albeit a small family. Subaway and Quizno's fail by a large margin. Folks one gets what one pays for. I love subway but only when I'm to lazy to drive further for a real deli sandwich. Awesome video and I sincerely thank you for posting this. This is a small lesson in economics and dollars and cents spending.
My local grocery store deli counter knows my $5 sandwich order by heart; roast beef, provolone, thin red onion, mayo, oil/vinegar, Italian spices, on a 12 inch hero roll, cut into 3 pieces (I eat 1 piece and refrigerate the other 2 for 2 more lunches). It's always super fresh and I get my groceries while they make it so I'm not really waiting. Yummy and economical!
Comparing sub chains to supermarkets is going to be no contest. Supermarkets get everything much cheaper and they also don't have to depend on selling them to stay open. They sold you a pound of ham for 7.99
I just had quiznos today and it is the tastiest sandwich even though it is smaller in size and weight. I eat subway on a routine basis and i wouldnt mind going for something different every now and then
A few reasons: 1. Advertising. It's easier to say £5 then it is to convert it from dollars. 2. Currency manipulation: If you charge someone £5 for something worth $5, you essentially are making more money for no reason. 3. Subways reps spent a long time preparing and signifying their menu. As with all fast food chains the largest factor to their global success is the idea of "comfort", no matter where you go in the world, you can still order a Big Mac. It tries to convey the idea of comfort in the global scale.
I get what you're saying, but the quality of Quiznos and Subway are garbage. There is no question that that supermarket one looked significantly better than the other two. That said, I'd rather go to my local butcher and eat a grassfed hormone free organic steak, spiced up and cooked in organic butter. Better than any sandwich you're going to get and way healthier.
Good supermarkets usually use the best quality meats for their made to order sandwiches. Yeah, if you go to Wal-Mart it won't be good. But go to an independent non-chain supermarket and you'll always get better made-to-order food.
***** Even supermarkets aren't the best. Ideally, you get your meats from a high rated butcher, breads/buns from a bakery, and veggies from a farm(ers market). You can't beat that kind of quality.
I have never noticed that, but I live in Toronto now, and there is ALWAYS a starbucks near a subway... Just don't know why. They belong to the same company?
Never thought about the Starbucks?Subway thing before, but the Subway near me in a strip mall is probably 150yds away from a freestanding Starbucks. Alabama
here in Bakersfield CA, we have grocery stores like Vons and Albertsons that have Starbucks in them and in the same parking lot theres a Starbucks , You could walk to starbucks, walk across the parkinglot and your at starbucks
I have a gas station near where I live and it sells subway sandwiches and Starbucks coffee there as well so I guess it is true that subway and Starbucks are near eachother
I don't know if it's the same in Cali but in Ohio where I live at subway you can can have them put more of each item on your sub for the same price as a normal sub.
I am from St Lucia and we have sub way only, the deli here does make subs for about $15 ec which is about $6 usd doesnt taste as good as sub way but sub way is $25 ec... We do have french baggette bread for $6 to 7 ec but it is much smaller
There is a Subway in my hometown (actually 2 of them), but no Starbucks. Same way in a town I used to work in. Subway, no Starbucks. I'm in the Midwest. So it's not always true!
supermarket seems to be best value, most supermarkets carry good brands lke boars head so thats quality there. plus thats multiple meals with that sandwich for sure
in Quebec there is a very few starbuck and not all subway have starbucks near, but there's one the city center with a starbuck near, so it can't be a coincidence
Gabriel Olav No worries yo its just that i never saw palm trees in Chicago. I know where this is now. I've been there Its a shopping center in Cypress, CA close to Cypress High. I used to work in Orange, CA which is right on the other side of Disneyland. I live in Pennsylvania now, so you can see why I care so much, I just miss Cali lol.
Hi, What I would like you do is compare it to a 6 inch From the Supermarket as that would then obviously be cheaper, But by my reckoning still have more of everything than the other 2
I love Quiznos due to the quality and taste of the bread and meat in general. I pay for "quality" not quantity. Personal opinion. Last sandwich it's massive, I wonder how it taste. Thanks for the video!
Up here in Oregon, wherever you can find a toilet you'll find a Starbucks. They actually had this marketing plan to saturate everywhere with their stores. My guess is that the existence of a Subway is coinciding with a Starbucks is likely coincidental. The exception here may be that Subway isn't much of a breakfast place and don't serve coffee (at least that I've seen) so they may be targeting Subway down there for that. One thing to note for example, in Oregon City, OR, there was one Subway and THREE Starbucks all within 1/2 of a mile on Molalla Ave. One Starbucks was eventually closed for low sales and a different location was opened.
there is this sandwich shop in glendale, ca called tiffany's. the 9inch sandwiches cost $3.65 and they put soo much meat that half the sandwich fills me up while at subway a foot long doesnt fill me up.
Stater Bros for sure! I get their blt and my hubby loves their italian. So much better than the sandwich shops. Fresh, cut to order meat (as thin or thick as you like) and they do not skimp on toppings. Of course we also now have Jersey Mikes in my area of Ca and they are pretty good.
I used to like Quiznos a lot for the specialty sandwiches, they have a lot of flavor. I think I used to order the 4 dollar torpedo with turkey and some Italian sauce they put on? But the value is pretty bad.. they measure out 2 Oz of meat on that thing. Subway is pretty good, and grocery store sandwiches are great, especially for the value.
Lol your right about the subway and starbucks close together , there is a subway/starbucks at the shell gas station her in santa clarita and in hasley canyon castaic there is a subway 3 locations down from starbucks lol funny
You could just get a half of the Stater Bros. sandwich, pay only $4, and still get more food than a Subway or Quiznos. I guess I'll have to check into trying out supermarket sandwiches more often.
Supermarket or subway I prefer Quiznos bread is to dry but your right about supermarkets usually do everything fresh and to your order with more stuff on the sandwich
Im gonna do a segment similar to this but instead of playing with my food I'm gonna play with myself ;)
Sir this is a CWJ video xD
how about the taste ?? the quantity just nothing without quality.
You make a good point.
Yes cause subway is famous for its quality fresh ingredients...
"i dont want to film inside, so they dont make it different "
*goes in filming them making the sandwich *
Why does everything have to be dry? have some mustard or mayo sometime.
Mark T I normally don't order dry. I did it so the sandwiches would not get soggy and we could tear them apart

he probably does but it had to be dry for accurate weight
the supermarket is the best value.
It all comes down to taste.
Everything in America is much cheaper than stuff in the UK..
$5 for 12 inch USA
£5 for 12 inch UK
$5 = £3.06
Barely get a 6 inch for £3 in the UK..
The deli on the corner of my street sells jamaican beef paties with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, on 2 giant slices of cocoa bread for $3.50 and it makes more money then the subway up the block
***** Really leave the sandwiches for bitches to make big dog

“I can usually make my sandwich way better”
Big pp energy
5 DOLLARS?! In Sweden it's like 10 bucks for one footlong, and about 12 dollars for a meal...
I once got a kebab-pizza for 5 bucks/40 DKK in Helsingborg... Don't buy food from Subway, McD ect when you live in Scandinavia :)
5 DOLLARS, Exactly what I thought too
It's kind of relative. European countries minimum wage etc... is much higher than the States.

1st Subway
2nd Quiznos
3rd SM
I noticed that both Subway and Quiznos use the cheaper, less nutritious iceberg lettuce while the Stater Bros use the more expensive romaine lettuce.
You really think glutinous jack cares about the quality?
Supermarket subs all the way. If you get a chance to stop in a Publix, their deli makes amazing subs!
you can say everything from subway but there sandwitches are AMAZING!!!!!

i meant taste nothing els
Lol not at all. You have poor taste
It's the same way in Arizona! Rather you're in rich Scottsdale, middle class Laveen, or lower class Phoenix. There is always a Starbucks near Subway
"she's cutting my cheese right now"
Lol i heard that and thought wtf
Theres nothing wtf about that, that's what people do in real life, you people are obviously too concerned with others think and have zero self confidence
Quality not quantity. Just because they give you more does not mean its better. It is the taste that counts
Anthony Ramsey Never heard of Stator Bros
Each person has a different taste

theirs about 3 pairs subway and Starbucks all near each other in the City of Glasgow, never noticed till now.
The best value would be the supermarket, 460 is just over a pound of ham and that would cost you 4 or 5 bucks alone.
I think a new employee or something must have made it because that just seems way too big.
chownful Look at the size of the box it came in though. Why would they use a box that big unless it's always that size.
Vons consistantly makes sandwiches like this and they taste great.
If you want the best tasting East coast tasting sub it's Jersey Mikes all the way!
whoa the stater bros is my kind of sandwich good deal too
where i live theres a place called dutchmans market and they would always cut the meat fresh
Pyro Gaming where do you live?
Why?
Pyro Gaming because I'm dutch
LLOOOL "shes cutting my cheese!!"
I would choose Quizno's hands down...but if you order a cold, dry ham sandwich you're doing it wrong!

I would prefer the Stater Bros
I agree
In King of Prussia, Pa on 202 there is a Starbucks about a block down from the Subway! LOL!
Subway the best lettuce & bread sandwich out there. And you need a magnifying glass to detect any protein.

I love Quiznos because of their cheese bread and high quality meat. Also subway doesn't give you jack chit for meat.
stater bros looked the best.. that thing was the size of a small baby!
The area where I live also has Starbucks near Subway! I never really wondered why though..
there are no subways close to starbucks anywhere where i reside
For Subway Chipotle Southwest Sauce
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 teaspoons lime juice
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon minced fresh cilantro
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
1/2 teaspoon water
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon ground chipotle chile
pinch dried thyme
pinch ground cumin
+magzire but its normally orange-pink?
+Kevin Donnelly
Yup Paprika is quite amazing
yumm
you should do one with Jersey Mike's Subs best place!
subways are eleven inch
We have two Starbucks in our area. One is close to a Subway and another one isn't even near Subway, but their is a Quiznos near by.
Id say super market, it's almost 3x more in every department and only 2$ more expensive!
I have to give it to the supermarket.
Subway
Comparing sub chains to supermarkets is going to be no contest. Supermarkets get everything much cheaper and they also don't have to depend on selling them to stay open. They sold you a pound of ham for 7.99
I just had quiznos today and it is the tastiest sandwich even though it is smaller in size and weight. I eat subway on a routine basis and i wouldnt mind going for something different every now and then
How is USA Subways $5 and UK is £5.....Makes no sense.
A few reasons:
It tries to convey the idea of comfort in the global scale.
dude, here in the netherlands > 7,50 euro
In Ireland its €4 for half a foot and its €7 for a foot long
***** Has anyone heard of higher taxes in Europe?
Quality > Quantity
goodish reeview but so classic american, don't really care about quality of produce but care about quantity
I get what you're saying, but the quality of Quiznos and Subway are garbage. There is no question that that supermarket one looked significantly better than the other two. I live in Vancouver and its the same here, starbucks are always with subway...
It's the same with me, there's a subway fairly close to a Starbucks near my house
I think subways the best stater bros is way to big
You're like the Quiznos of chefs lol
quiznos is better quality. subway is crap.
Does Quiznos even exist anymore
Same way in Safford, we have one Subway and one Starbucks, they are right next to each other
I don't even know if KY has a Starbucks unless it's in Lexington or Louisville.
Yeah there are Starbucks everywhere in Louisville I should know cause I live there
The Subway I work at is literally next door to a Starbucks. I work in Pittsburgh, PA.
There is always a subway by Starbucks lol Antioch Ca Pittsburg Ca there is even a In N Out by Home Depot or Lowes all the time
Yeah it's true im here at Mexicali next to Calexico California and theres a Starbucks next to a Subway lol
I have never noticed that, but I live in Toronto now, and there is ALWAYS a starbucks near a subway... Just don't know why. They belong to the same company?
Ok, probably just because I live in downtown and there's just tons of starbuck subway here.
Subway don't sell coffee
"Im not gonna film inside cause' i dont want them to try to make it look better than usual" *goes films inside straight away*
Never thought about the Starbucks?Subway thing before, but the Subway near me in a strip mall is probably 150yds away from a freestanding Starbucks. Alabama

Adrian Calugar Here in west Texas they charge for extra meat & cheese, but typically don't charge for extra toppings.
I work at a subway in east Texas and we don't charge extra for more veggies or dressing, but we charge a small amount for extra meat or cheese.
I am from St Lucia and we have sub way only, the deli here does make subs for about $15 ec which is about $6 usd doesnt taste as good as sub way but sub way is $25 ec... We do have french baggette bread for $6 to 7 ec but it is much smaller

Do Quiznos sell cookie exactly the taste from Subway?
There is a Subway in my hometown (actually 2 of them), but no Starbucks. Same way in a town I used to work in. Subway, no Starbucks. I'm in the Midwest. So it's not always true!
In Brisbane (Australia) there is only one Starbucks that I know of.
Subway and Starbucks are 7 miles away from each other here in South Central Indiana
Wow i like the supermarket one. But in my country i dont think the super markets here seĺls sand wiches
That deli supermarket sandwich looks so damn good but I would of put some mayo on it tho
Idk about subway and Starbucks but in Florida there is always a hooters and iHop in the same shopping center or parking lot.
On the subway and Starbucks thing nay where I like subway is a block away and the nearest Starbucks is 2.5 hrs away
supermarket seems to be best value, most supermarkets carry good brands lke boars head so thats quality there. plus thats multiple meals with that sandwich for sure

My subway isn't near a Starbucks but it is fairly close to a coffee shop

what kinda of cheese is that on menu says american cheese, that dont exsist here sweden is it like white cheddar?
You could just get a half of the Stater Bros. sandwich, pay only $4, and still get more food than a Subway or Quiznos. I guess I'll have to check into trying out supermarket sandwiches more often.
Supermarket or subway I prefer Quiznos bread is to dry but your right about supermarkets usually do everything fresh and to your order with more stuff on the sandwich
I live in California and haven't seen a Starbucks and subway close by
