I noticed two things in this movie:
    1. Jason never uses the machete
    2. He is always wet. I guess they had to keep splashing Kane Hodder lol.

This movie had one of my favorite kills...like it or not...it's really creative. When Jason picks up that one chick's guitar and just fucking smacks her with it and kills her through the use of a guitar. That's one of my favorite scenes in any movie, I think. Lol.

can anyone explain why the girl in the movie keeps seeing different versions of young jason? It was established in the original movie that jason was disfigured but in Jason takes Manhattan they show him as a normal little boy in the very beginning, this with part 5,9,10 should have never existed they give the franchise a bad reputation

This is a hill that I would die on Jason takes Manhattan is one of the most entertaining films of the entire franchise.... Maybe it was because I was the right age when this movie came along I don't know but I've always had a deep love for the film despite all of the obvious flaws.

I wished Jason chased one of the characters while driving a taxi car. Like the characters would think it's help but, it's really Jason in the car and the dead taxi driver that he killed sitting right next to him. Lol, that would have been funny.

Drumdums I honestly thought this movie was lazy and poorly written. The characters were a complete disgrace, The Kills were lacking, lazy and uninteresting. Most of all, Jason can freaking teleport, which is completely stupid! Not even Kane Hodder playing Jason could save this damn movie. But however, it makes a pretty good time waster, so to speak LOL... and the movie itself barely lived up to its title

did u see the talk show with kane hodder and it's descosing part VIII before it came out to cinema and Kane Hodder dressed up as Jason for the show and he didn't say anything he stared straight at the host and at the end they were going to shake hands then Kane grabbed his hand and pulled the host towards him, it was hiliarious

So, do I think part 8 is as bad as everybody makes it out to be, YES! Does that mean that think it's the worse slasher ever, NO!
There's a lot worse out there.
P.S. When it comes to the END of this film, I like to think that Renny was tripping on her visions as a result of being drugged by the punks because I REFUSE to believe that JASON VORHEES of all characters, turned back into a little kid. Even in a toxic sewer.

    "Freddy's dead"
    "Halloween resurrection"
    "Jason goes to hell"

Great review. I for one love this movie. It is my favorite one with Kane Hodder as Jason. I also love the look of him in this movie especially the mask. Speaking of characters, part of the reason I defend Part 7 is because it actually is one of the few Friday flicks to actually attempt something with a story involving Tina Shepard and the turmoil she was dealing with both from the loss of her father, her powers, and channeling that anxiety to defeat Jason to perfect the one man who was willing to accept her for who she was. Now the reason I bring this up is because they wanted to bring back Laura Park Lincoln for the role of Tina here...

Imagine if there was an "infamous subway massacre" in this movie where we had the lights flickering on and off rapidly and Jason killing everybody in the subway in very gory fashion while trying to reach for Rennie and Sean. Dude I bet you that would have been awesome!

Even though Friday the 13th is an iconic franchise and was very successful its the worst slasher/horror series ever in terms of quality. And the marquee killer is the biggest Michael Myers clone ever, its like they barely tried lol. I'm surprised they weren't sued for plagiarism I swear.

I think the original climax was supposed to be a showdown at the top of the statue of liberty and Jason falling off of it. Man that would have been way more awesome than having him turn back into a kid. That really confused me as a kid. It still does really.

And then you have Kane Hodder. I'm glad that he was having fun for what had basically become a thankless role because most of his scenes, ESPECALLY in New York, is where he is able to carry this movie. The electric guitar, boxing, and toxic sludge kills are indeed highlights, but they're few and far between and you could just watch them here on TH-cam if anyone was really interested. Also speaking of toxic sludge, I feel bad for Kane for having to wear WHATEVER that was on him for his role as juicy Jason.

  • @Amber_xo_133
    @Amber_xo_133 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Kane Hodder says that one of the most fun parts of his tenure as Jason were the scenes in Times Square. He says that spectators were lined up and down the block watching the filming and he didn't want to take off the mask to destroy their illusion of Jason. He said that every once in awhile he'd turn his head and look at them and watch them all go crazy.
According to an interview in Fangoria Magazine (August 1989), Kane Hodder vomited on cue in the final scene after drinking several pitchers of water. This was not a special effect.
Despite the nature of the film and adverse filming conditions, Kane Hodder provided several moments of levity which were appreciated by the cast. Following several death scenes, for example, once director Rob Hedden called "cut," Hodder would do a brief disco dance in full Jason costume and make-up making the cast laugh.
    Rob Hedden originally wrote more of the movie to be set in New York. He had written scenes at Madison Square Garden, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Building. But despite the fact that this film had the highest budget of a Friday the 13th movie at the time ($5 million), Paramount told him that there wasn't enough money to film so many scenes in New York, so he was forced to rewrite the film and spend more time on the cruise ship;
at around 1h 28 mins) In the diner the man Jason throws into the mirror is Ken Kirzinger who would go on to play Jason in Freddy vs. Jason (2003). Kirzinger also doubles as Jason in a few brief shots in this film.
At 100 minutes this is the longest running time of the Friday The 13th films.
Many of the actors pointed out to themselves a plot hole earlier in the filming of the movie: they wondered how the ship got out of Crystal Lake and into the Atlantic Ocean. Since most of them were just happy to be in a film they didn't bring it up to the producers or director. Actor Vincent Craig Dupree was quoted in an interview about the plot hole saying "this damn boat could have come from the Sahara Desert and gotten into the Atlantic". "I don't care, I'm not gonna challenge the concept".
After this film's disappointing results at the box-office, Paramount decided to sell the rights to the Jason Voorhees character (though not the Friday the 13th film series) to New Line Cinema. This makes "Jason Takes Manhattan" the last feature produced by Paramount until the 2009 remake Friday the 13th (2009), which was possible because they still had the rights to the first eight movies. New Line released only three other sequels (Jason Goes to Hell (1993), Jason X (2001) and Freddy vs. Jason (2003)) in between.
at around 55 mins) In the scene where Jason reaches through the porthole and grabs Rennie, Jensen Daggett was reportedly really terrified. Her face was just inches from a large and very sharp piece of glass that had become stuck in the window frame and the actor who played Jason was (unknowingly) pulling her toward it.
In the original script, when Jason makes it to the dock, a dog starts barking at him and he kicked it. Kane Hodder, who was playing Jason, felt that kicking the dog was going too far so the scene was dropped.
Due to negative feedback from fans and director Rob Hedden himself, as the film wasn't what he wanted it to be, he has repeatedly apologized to any fans who were disappointed by the film, such as in the Blu-ray and DVD audio commentary, and has since disowned the film. The next films (produced by another studio) also conveniently ignore the events of this movie.
Of the female leads (all the girls are supposed to be graduated from high school), only Jensen Daggett was one of the few actresses who was actually a teenager and was 19 years old at the time of shooting.
During production many of the cast and crew began calling the movie "Jason Takes Vancouver." This is because Vancouver doubled for New York in various scenes due to budgetary reasons, as Paramount refused to budget the extensive filming locations in New York. Except for two days of filming in Times Square, all of the scenes in the docks, sewer, alleys, and the diner were filmed in Vancouver.
The original posters for the film featured Jason ripping through an "I Love NY" poster. In the first poster Jason is holding a bloody knife which was cleaned in a second poster for fear that the blood was too graphic. Both posters were dropped following a complaint from the New York Tourism Committee.
The only Friday the 13th film to have a blooper reel on DVD and Blu-Ray.
at around 1h 24 mins) In the subway, when Jason is chasing Rennie and Sean, Sean pulls the emergency brake to knock Jason back. On the poster to right of Sean sprawled in graffiti are the words "Jason Lives," which is the subtitle of the sixth 'Friday the 13th' film: Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)
In keeping with series tradition, a David Bowie song, "Ashes to Ashes", was used as the movie's fake title. This working title was used while filming in New York City to avoid fan interruptions, and was also used in the script to prevent auditioning actors from knowing and revealing what film they were making. In the fake-titled script, Jason was renamed Ethan.
(at around 1h 10 mins) Vincent Craig Dupree actually cut his hand in the phone booth when Jason shatters the glass around him.
Peggy Hedden, the New York waitress, is the sister of the film's director Rob Hedden.
Feature film debut of actress Kelly Hu, who plays Eva. She is the first Asian character in the series.
During the opening credits featuring New York City's Time Square a huge Batman (1989) poster is clearly visible. Filming of these scenes took place during the promotional campaign of Tim Burton's first Batman film, starring Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton.
The cruise ship is named Lazarus, which is the name of a biblical character who was brought back from the dead, just like Jason comes back from the dead.
The studio was looking for a Canadian actor to play Jason for the role. Ken Kirzinger was considered to play Jason. Kane Hodder was determined to convince Paramount to hire him again but to his surprise, they felt he wouldn't be interested to reprise his role. Ken would instead play Kane's stunt double in the movie and eventually would replace Kane in Freddy vs. Jason (2003). Canadian makeup artist Bill Terezakis also worked on both movies as well.
Many fans disliked Jason's unmasking in this as it was deemed unconvincing and unintimidating.
One of only three Friday the 13th movies not to be scored by Harry Manfredini.
Both the debut theatrical feature film directed by Rob Hedden as well as being Hedden's first produced cinema movie screenplay.
The dog Toby is named after a dog the director once had.
Rennie's dog Toby is a Border Collie
Scott Reeves is another soap star in a Friday The 13th film (Y&R) and is married in real life to fellow soap star Melissa Reeves (Jennifer Horton on DAYS) who for many years before meeting Scott, dated Tom Fridley (Cort in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)).
The flaregun Charles uses is a Webley & Scott No. 1 Mk. III.
The disco club scene where Eva is killed by Jason on the cruise ship was a leftover scene from the original script, where this scene would take place in a glitzy New York Nightclub instead.
The film and its characters don't reach New York until the last half hour into the runtime.
(at around 48 mins) This is the first movie in the series where Jason kills one of his victims by strangulation.
Body count: 20. Jim Miller, Suzi Donaldson, JJ Barrett, Boxing Guy, Tamara Mason, First Officer, Admiral Robertson, Ship Crew Member, Wayne Webber, Eva Watanabe, Miles Wolfe, Deck Hand, Holmes, JoJo, Julius Gaw, Police Officer, Colleen Van Duesen, Charles McCullough, Bartender and Sewer Worker oh, and the whole graduating class, too.
The prologue of the film foreshadows all the places that Jason will chase the teenagers: downtown with the gang members, the diner, the alley with the drug addicts, and the subway.

Man, I used to be a big fan of this movie as a kid. I would watch this and part 7 back to back all of the time as a kid. Watching the movie now in 2018, it's OK. Not great or anything, but at least it's watchable (unlike the next sequel after this but ill get to that once I watch your review for that). Jason takes Manhattan is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me since fans just love to crap on this movie. Am I saying it's one of my favorite installments in the Friday franchise? No, but I still like this movie. Yes, 75% of the movie is on a boat instead of new York unfortunately and yes some scenes are actually in Vancouver instead of new York. But you gotta face it, it's probably not the director's fault. They just didn't have the budget high enough to do it. And it was back to the drawing board over and over. Plus to top that, the kills aren't that brutal in this movie. Yeah, I will say there are a few that stands out in this movie, but I've always felt the kills in this movie were worse than part 7's kills. But, I still find some enjoyment out of this movie. We're finally outside of crystal lake for the first time ( I guess fans got tired of seeing the same thing over and over so they changed the location) Jason is played by the legendary Kane hodder once again and he's more awesome than ever, and the characters were decent at best. Sorry you consider this your least favorite Friday the 13th movie Lee but hey, at least we have better entries in the series. For me, Jason takes Manhattan is OK. Not great, but ok.

If Jason was pursuing Tina or Tommy Jarvis into New York, I think that would've made the most sense IMO. Especially Tommy, as it was established that Jason recognized Tommy and had a special animosity towards him. Julius the boxer was bad-ass though. He went out like a man's man.

The thing that got to me about the ending was - Jason was deformed before his first death, but when the toxic waste hit him he not only becomes 8 years old again, but an 8 year old who's perfectly normal looking. So - toxic waste heals birth defects?

  • @lw3646

I thought the boat was actually a better setting than a city, you're stuck in a contained isolated place with him and there's no help coming. In a big city it would be easy to loose him/get help. That said I liked the crime and urban decay subtext to this film. The scenes of Jason riding the subway or walking into a cafe made me cringe though. The extras have no reaction either to him if you go back and rewatch the subway scene. This film has some big flaws, you can see how it badly panders to its audience. The teens at the end are bright, resourceful and pretty brave where as the teacher/authority character is this cowardly, stuborn idiot, everything he says is basically wrong. I thought Jason's face actually looked funny in this one it, looked so silly.... Also the films feels long when you're watching it. It's lost the muddy brown look too that it used to have, there's far more neon colours. Not a big fan of this look.

There were moments in this film that I really enjoyed I found this movie thrilling. I'm not really a fan of these films slow pace per say. All these kids seemed to have goals in this film relating to what they're going to do with there life or at least that element was there. The Kills on the boat are personally my favorite ones in this film it seemed specific to that character more or less. I especially love the one Jason throws a guy into a circuit board or something on the boat. I guess those scenes aren't horror movie material but at this point like you said what are they going to do with this after so many movies in the woods?
I did hate right before they left the one lady asks about the kids on the boat but just takes a student's word for it that the situation is too far gone. I don't know that moment just irked me. After 7 movies of trying this series out and readying myself for FvsJ this was a much welcomed change even if it didn't make sense.

Upon rewatching I still don't dislike it, but that's not saying it's good either, even for a slasher film. Im flabbergasted whenever I see this ranked below Jason Goes to Hell, Jason X, and Freddy vs. Jason. And unlike most other gimmicks in the franchise, this one actually works specifically because they didnt get to film as much in New York as they would like. If they had been able to do the things they wanted to do like film the boxing fight in Madison Square Garden, the movie would have been silly. Instead, they were able to successfully portray Manhattan as an urban version of Crystal Lake.

This movie is pretty boring during the boat ride. I like to watch right when they get to New York. The thing I believe sucks the most is Jason uses a machete to kill just one time out of the whole movie and it wasn't an innovative kill. And it happened during the boring portion of the film. You know the blonde bitch stereotype, the creative geek, the shy girl, etc. It's as if there what was shown in Part 7 was SOMEHOW dialed back even further so not only does it feel rehashed but it's just boring because we know what to expect. Maybe if they had cut the move back to an hour and a half this would have been SOMEWHAT tolerable but somehow, I doubt it.

Well, here's where this franchise "sunk" to a new low (pun intended). Before I give my rant on "Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan", I should note that this is one of those movies out there that has gained a cult following. Heck, I have a coworker at my job who loves this movie. And I can definitely see the appeal... in the final act. The image of Jason standing in front of the hocky billboard gave me a chuckle and the scene of him in the middle of time's square has become iconic... that doesn't mean this movie's good.

Jason death by drowning don't make sense cause he's fine with water in part 4, 6, 7, again great way end Jason with toxic waste (why it floods thecsewers is beyond me) but then we have a normal kid wearing white boxers just plain weird, I'd had him as disfigured Jason just fade away meaning Jasons finally at peace.
