Love this! Like was said earlier, even if BG had never touched a sax, he cemented his place in history just for writing this tune! I know a lot of people like to give this tune a Latin feel but man...I just can't imagine doing anything with this tune but swinging it! And the swinging that's happening in this vid is just so.....perfect!
Bravo!!! If Benny Golson had never touched a Sax, he would still be in the Jazz Hall of Fame for his outstanding compositions. What a treat to see Curtis Fuller also.
Notice how this grooves from beat ONE! No BSing (taking a couple measures or until the B section to kinda start grooving, or never grooving at all). You feel it all through your body instantly and you almost wanna dance. THIS is what groove is. Take note...
.....wOw! what a performance of this masterwork of contemporary jazz! A landmark, no doubt! What an inspiration! I feel blessed to have it in my ears! Like I was there, woah! Solos like cascading water of sound, in the pocket and out, love it! Thanx for sharing! I'm there, way there!
Benny Golson is a giant. In Hawkins' tradition. A sort of fighting spirit with the instrument. "Knighttyaccha" is right, the reed may be softer.. But may we critisise a giant?
i'm not sure if he was using the custom made otto-link mouthpiece in this show (made specially by mr. otto for him) a mouth piece that made for a number 8 reed, nicked "the popsicle stick" . but whatever, he is known for his dark and rich tone. if you love him, then your comment is just unnecessary hahaha
To be honest, this sounds awful, awful solos and Golson is out of tune. Yet, people keep going "Nice Tone." If you want a good recording check Art Blakey's take with Golson and Lee Morgan on it, its quality it's got Jon Hendricks on it.
boxing1000 I disagree. The "sound" is outdoor festival acoustics, for sure, and that's never Van Gelder quality. So why be so fussy about it when a band's swinging like this? Williams and Allen are great here -- and the first 8 bars of Golson's solo are beautifully economical and expressive. LeDonne's solo swings with block chords for emphasis -- what else can you do outside like this? In other words, this band is exemplifying all the right things, but they're stuck doing it outside, with a bad sound set-up and the expectation that they play long, "blowing" solos. Christ, give 'em a break.
What……a fantastic line up…..swinging modern jazz….what a find,thank you for posting.
