One easy way to remember this is that molds are used on "wet materials" which are in a molten state. Dies are used on "frozen materials" which are solid. Wet and moldy... or die in the cold. :)
One great example of usage of dies in everyday life is the coins in your pocket. They are made by a die in a press under extreme pressure. One question I have is this. My neighbor collects antique "diecast" metal cars. Are they actually molded or are they "forged" from a billet like the connecting rods in your car?
So for the last 10 years I worked in a Zinc diecast shop as a repair machinist. The molds that the molten zinc was shot into were called dies by every one in the shop including the owner. Maybe because diecast was in the name but it kind of rubbed me wrong when they would ask me to repair their "die."
Isn't it more correct to say that a die is just something material is forced into-/onto a material to create a part, rather than making parts in a cold, solid form? You're definition doesn't fit in case of die casting, warm exrusion...?
Plastic injection mold maker here, a good rule of thumb is a mold is typically requires material to be manipulated into the cavity, you could say it's material manipulated whereas dies manipulate the material ! The opposite, some guys here have mentioned wet molds and dry dies.
Yeah...good description and explain for the difference, as our die casting or aluminum injection mold we call them mold but sometime somebody say it’s a die...
Thank you for the explanation. I still have a doubt that the casting process is done also using dies which involves hot molten metal. Can you please explain?
I have been out of the manufacturing business for about 10years .I have over 18 yrs of maintenance experience. I'm looking at a job as a tool and die set up member. Can you share some information about this.
Bobby Byrd if you are looking for a job please reach out to me! I am a recruiter for a large staffing firm and looking to fill a role in the SC area. :)
But what about 'gravity die casting, and low- and high pressure die casting for metals? "Die'' is in the word but the material is injected or inserted liquified right?
Die casting can be either gravity die casting or injection die casting. It does resemble to injection moulding, as he explained with plastics. When its for metal alloys, we call them Die Casting. In the 80ies companies that manufactured moulding tools would often supply both for Plastic Injection and Die Casting, but in the 90ies the demand for plastic moulds was so big they became specialized in one of the other. It did confuse me also, as in Portuguese, we call Die-Cast as "Injection Foundry" (direct translation). In metal alloys you ould either do Sand Casting using a Sand Mould, or Die Casting. I am sure that with some googling you can find good examples of this.
Great videos , what do they mean in more detail when they talk about parts that are forged, I'm in visioning something similar to the ways of blacksmiths but can not see any new manufacturing going this way. How is the forging of small parts accomplished in factories today's. Thanks .
My manufacturing book literally talks about pouring molten metal into a "die". Not a mold. A die. It seems to use the term mold and die interchangeably.
Thank you very much! I'm a translator of Japanese patents and Japanese uses the same word for both "mold" and "die" (those jerks) so this was very helpful to me.
You really can't deform plastic once it has been molded. You can mill it and drill it, but you can't really "deform" it because it is soft and gummy and wants to return to its original state: junk.
Phil, For the most part I agree but there are exceptions. For instance polycarbonate is often worked cold in a sheet metal brake to make modest bends. Think about some machine guards yuo have seen. All plastics have some elasticity that can be exceeded so it will hold a new form.
Awesome example I attempt to explain manufacturing processes in a similar way, so there want be any ambiguity as to what is being said. I found if you can relate processes to things operators use in there house, or daily lives it's very effective. keep up the great work.
hey, I am going to start plastic industry in small scale. I want to ask you can we produce(with injection molding) same objects that are produced by blowing (with injection molding)
I would love if you could do videos on stripping and the advantageous of using nitrogen spring versus wire. And perhaps a video on what goes into building a die from part drawing to final creation. I call on tool and die shops across the southwest and your videos plus others really save my butt.
Lucky me , first to respond ! *( does that get ME A BEER ? ) hahaha Among my first thoughts , is 'plastic deformation' , where both processes could be used, either a die, or a mold . . but that isn't mentioned. Whether an oversight or not, who's to say ? I'm just speculating out loud. I spent some time in tool and die, working to some tight specs. Now, I've given up on any 'working for the other guy'. I trade for all my needs. Among the closest works I've done is Faceting Gems, P.M.
Sir, Can uh please tell me in simple way that why we call pressure die casting as a die not mould because it uses liquid metal.... U said in previous comment that we call metal liquid processes as die but sir.....then why we call sand casting mould?..it uses metal... Elaborate it in simple language please
but in die casting we pour molten metal into what is called a "die". it is exactly like injection molding only with metal alloys instead of plastic yet it is called die casting and uses a die

Very Nice presentaion sir,
It is a clear and correct understanding of difference between..Die and Mould.
Thank you soo Much for this Video.

Nice job, I have been a tool maker for years. You did a good job in your comparisons.
So for the last 10 years I worked in a Zinc diecast shop as a repair machinist. The molds that the molten zinc was shot into were called dies by every one in the shop including the owner. Good video. Nicely explained.

The best explanation ever ❤️
how about die-cast ? they are using mold but it is called die cast.. pls explain the difference

So just to confirm the difference between injection moulding and die casting is injection moulding is plastic and die casting is metal?
Very well done. Kudos !
A shape can be ground on a toolbit or other cutters then used to make a corresponding shape on the workpiece.

Very useful, just what I needed and very clear
Very well and entertaining way to show this difference. Educating is an art that needs creativity besides experience.
Excellent explanation thanks
Thanks I am much clearer now! Can you made a video about investment casting?
Hello. One question, what about die casting, you are using liquid alloy. What´s the right way to call it die casting mold or die casting die ?
Awesome example I attempt to explain manufacturing processes in a similar way, so there want be any ambiguity as to what is being said.
I found if you can relate processes to things operators use in there house, or daily lives it's very effective.
keep up the great work.
Well presented! Now I can explain mold vs die to my artistic daughter.
Best explanation
You're an excellent educator. Thanks
Is there such a thing as a simple punch and die set for beginners to look over?
Great Explanation. Thank you
Thank you sir, Very informative , explained easily
very well explained ! thanks
that is very helpful in understanding the difference. Thank you so much...
Excellent explanation. Thank you!
hey, I am going to start plastic industry in small scale. I want to ask you can we produce(with injection molding) same objects that are produced by blowing (with injection molding)
Thanks for the well explained video.
This video is fantastic. Thanks

Very informative. Thank you.
great explain. thanks
Mold has a cavity.
Thank you . Clear explanation
Thank you so much 😊
What about pressure die casting??
Lucky me , first to respond ! *( does that get ME A BEER ? ) hahaha

loved it sir
Why it is called pressure die casting hot process
Thanks for the video!
What about die casting though? Isn't the liquid plastic (or whatever) injected into a die then? (honest question! I'm not a native speaker...)
There's hot stamping as well
Thank you!
wow! very good definition!! thanks~~
hi I have some question, for the process hot forging is it mold or die?
+Marek Sumguy thanks I'm confused because I'm working taiwanese people and the term they use is mold. thanks a lot
clear, thank you
thank you! our modules in engineering doesn't clarify what's the difference.
This is very clear and easy to understand! Great work!
Sir,

thanks a lot
Thank you, but I still don't get why Die Casting uses dies and not moulds
Since you have Tool and Die is there Tool and Mold?
Azathoth43 i think making a mold is called "patternmaking"?
Mold or die you want people to do tool work you have to pay decent money. In this country all they o do rip you off.
R.G.W pie
Thx
heheheh clever answers
I also tool makers
😇😇😇
Excellent explanation. Thanks.
Great explanation. Thank you.
