    Every time one of these CG kids movies comes out the poster has to have the main character standing there with it's arms crossed like a rapper from the1980s!

    What I want from a Peter Rabbit film is a lovingly hand drawn animated short film in the original style, much like how the original Snowman film was in the style of Raymond Briggs. I haven't seen this film but it looks like Sony Animation Pictures had seen _Over the Hedge_ and then _Hop_ and thought "wow, that Paddington did rather good didn't it. What's that, we have the rights to Peter Rabbit? Brilliant, let's press the "generate film" button we developed making The Emoji Movie".

    • @sleeplessindefatigable6385
      @sleeplessindefatigable6385 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harry Robins Oh, they had that button way before The Emoji Movie. I think you can trace their modus operandi back as far as Stuart Little: take source material, put it in "the real world" get some celebrities in... boom! Guaranteed short-term revenue.
      In fairness to them, they do occasionally have at least something to do with good movies. BR2049 was fantastic, I really liked Life and Skyfall was great, but I like to think the good ones that they have a hand in exist as a way for some studio executive to balance their karma.

      I remember the animations used in the film 'Miss Potter' were very good, even though Rene Zellweger seemed miscast. Couldn't the animation team behind that have done a straight adaptation of The Tale Of Peter Rabbit?

  • @charliepanayiotou4305
    @charliepanayiotou4305 6 ปีที่แล้ว +61

    I saw someone who made a good point - when James Corden does something like One Man Two Guvnors or even Doctor Who where the role hasn't been specifically written for James Corden, he's fine. Everything else he's done which is basically him doing the James Corden public persona is insufferable.

    • @sleeplessindefatigable6385
      @sleeplessindefatigable6385 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Charlie Panayiotou Agreed. I instantly forgave him when he narrated Esio Trot because that was a genuinely lovely voiceover and his voice was significantly more pleasant thanks to the much toned down dialogue he was given. Unfortunately, it seems Sony Pictures have rights to the guy and basically have him do the James Corden thing in everything.

    The Peter Rabbit books are beloved classics that all children should read. Timeless tales with iconic characters, richly brought to life through masterful prose and beautiful, heartfelt artwork.
    This movie takes these books and with great care tears out the pages and wipes its figurative arse with them.
    Painfully unfunny jokes, far too many prat falls. And even coming from a life long fan of Rick Mayal, I could not find the constant reliance on testicle trauma less funny. The music made me want to smash the theatre's speakers. A new pop song every 5 F#ng seconds, like the editor had a siezure changing the radio dial. And good GOD. Why. Do. People. Like. James bloody Corden?!?

    Poor Beatrix Potter should be spinning in her grave. I read Peter Rabbit to a class of 30 children who loved the story. We then read Miss Tiggywinkle, and Jeremy Fisher. The trailer for this rubbish came out a week later. The children legitimately hated it.

    Here's a better way of watching it. Just imagine that Peter isn't the main character. The real protagonist and the one with the more compelling story is Thomas McGregor.

  • @ellenspear50
    @ellenspear50 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Agree: my thoughts on Peter Rabbit (the trailer only -- refuse to see this film) perfectly echoed here. This film has little, if anything, to do with Beatrix Potter's charming little book, which was read to us by a teacher when we were very young.

  • @MrSyrett

    Kermode obviously hasn’t seen the CBBC animation of the same name if he thinks this rabbit is irritating. I loathe Corden, but went into it with the advantage of not knowing the cast. I actually laughed quite a lot, and found the jokes quite sophisticated - almost Simpson-esque. Wasn’t til afterwards til I looked at the cast that I felt cheated.

    Just been subjected to it for the first time at a friend's son's seventh birthday party, and while it was somewhat entertaining enough for the kids, I was appalled at the almost sacrilegious trearment of Beatrix Potter's work. Yes and as someone that delikes James Corden, that his voice is the voice of Peter is a probably the most egregious malady with which this movie suffers. As a child Peter was very special to me, and to hear him act and sound as he was portrayed here was excruciating.

    So refreshing to hear so many like minded opinions! James Corden is not 'fabulously talented'. He's a jumped up children's TV presenter that has earned most of his recent notoriety from nothing more than being James Corden. Famous for being famous. No talent, no measurable skill and very much in the same ilk as the repulsive influx of reality 'stars' padding out the airwaves these days.

  • @GeneralBulldog54
    @GeneralBulldog54 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, it didn't feel like Peter Rabbit at all. Much more like an irresponsible and mean version of Bugs Bunny with mother issues co-starring his 3 sisters (a thrill seeker who's also occasional backup as well as two who only converse about who's older than the other) and cousin (who's the voice of reason). This all happening in the midst of Bad Neighbours style slapstick to mostly the younger McGregor.
    In spite of all this it's a guilty pleasure. It's the definition of lazy Sunday entertainment. The Paddington movies are insanely sweet, feel like they have a lesson while modernizing and honoring the source material. With this it's a live action Bugs Bunny movie where the rabbit is the antagonist.

    I liked James Corden in _Into The Woods_, and I thought he was really funny as Boris Johnson on the SNL skit, and fine in _Trolls_ ... but I understand the criticism because he does not always suit the roles I've seen him in. I imagined Peter Rabbit being a sweet little scamp, not this annoying... and I was irritated by him in _Cats_ in the same way I was by Rebel Wilson, they both seemed miscast?

    Nothing wrong with this film I think it was very good. People tearing it to shreds even though they haven't seen it? It's a kids movie and that's what it's trying to be and did very well. Of you want to be to see a bore fest aimed at critics who follow the crowd like sheep then don't watch it. If your want to see a fun light film then watch Peter Rabbit!
