Fantastic piece! I love Henze's motivic efficiency and integrated development that he displays so casually in this quartet. It helps to see all the permutations he puts the material through with the score. Thanks for posting!
I have to be completely honest. Henze is probably the one composer whose work I just don't get. I have scores for all the symphonies plus assorted other large scale works. Virtually the only impression that I get is unrelieved, undifferentiated grayness delivered in astonishingly over-long forms. This is probably the most negative comment that I've ever posted and I take no pleasure in it, but that's where I come down on this music. Thanks for your hard work Nick, as always!
I understand this sentiment... I'd encourage you to check out the other works of his I have on my channel which are all bit more colorful than this and also smaller-scale.
a retired music critic i know said something along the lines of 'Henze's music teeters on the edge of memorability' . The extremely sensual last movement of the 7rh Symphony seems to play to more to his strengths. However, grateful (as ever) to have this music made available on this channel! From my brief encounter as a music student. he was a very charismatic man and gave me some very insightful feedback when i played some of my music to him.
If that's how you feel then good for you for saying it. We need more honesty in the comments under classical music videos - less mindless adulation. Personally I like some of his work. His opera "The Tedious Way" is largely a hoot.

Going to give this one a try with score, as these quartets passed me by when I listened to them before. Thanks for much, Nick, for the score.
It's difficult to follow, to be honest... but worth giving another chance!

I am in agreement with you, Tom.

the ties which look like glissandos (thankfully) never established themselves in notation! i've only ever seen this in Henze scores.
I'll register my enthusiastic approval of this work; if this be "grey", give me more!

hahahaha your channel is gone
I'm a Henze fan, but his string quartets (in my opinion) aren't among his strongest works.
