    I may have missed it, but Discharging the capacitor, even if the microwave has not been used for months, is a fundamental check which could greatly extend your life expectancy.

      @@Outside-In. And the magnetron many uses yes ,but best off left alone indeed, found this disassemble hello from down under 2024 here , know it was uploaded 4 yrs ago, may I add the capacitor will one flash ash , but to drain them not an issue 1 needs to know how , tis easy if you know how, if not leave the covers on the microwave in my humble opinion , hello from down under, many usable parts indeed the magnetron not be one of them well not quite but better left untouched by people scrapping microwaves , 1 flash thou be ash unless you know what you be doing the wave forms hide in the circuit, 4000 W and same amperage somewhat bites when it gains a path 2 earth. But I digress imagine the people putting these magnetron's 2gether and the ceramic dust and other chemicals including beryllium one breath forget about making old bones that are basically 1 breath by scraping or scratching , not instant death but maybe somewhere down the line after inhalation, I will see myself out good people, but before I do leave the internals of magnetrons alone one way ticket .

    Thank you for the information about scraping microwaves SAFELY, very much appreciated. I do feel the need to add that the capacitor should be safely shorted and drained first, as it could still be charged up to high voltage.

    Way late to the party but I appreciate the information. Mum tossed out the microwave just recently and I was just stood there like "There's some quality copper in here, I wonder how easy it'd be to get that", took the outer casing off and had a look (using insulated tools and gloves of course) but then realised I didn't know what I was doing.
    From what I've read and seen so far the essential thing seems to be "Be careful, discharge the capacitors just in case they're still holding a dangerous charge, and don't touch the magnetron more than you have to and certainly don't dismantle it because the beryllium will kill you"
    Honestly I'm surprised there wasn't a label on it saying something like "Do not open, you will die".

    Hey, thanks for saving my life! Was seconds from cracking into our beloved LG unit to replace the magnetron and decided to check TH-cam for pointers real quick-like. You put the fear of god in me so I found a local countertop MV expert (easier said than done) and he did it + the turntable motor for $100. Money well spent, I'd say.

    I recently disassembled a Microwave. I'm a technician, so I used common sense and was as careful as possible. I kept the Magnetron, Transformer, Fan, and the Capacitor. I also desoldered the 7-Segment Display. I just kept them for future projects.

    "this is where you can get beryllium and it will give you cancer" Close but no, Its beryllia(beryllium oxide) not elemental Beryllium. As for the cancer aspect thats not the issue with beryllia (wile it is carcinogenic its a fairly mild carcinogen), The issue with beryllia is Berylliosis (inhalation of beryllia can cause chronic allergic reaction in the lungs, generally only a huge concern in large volumes or long term exposure).

    I'm only sixteen, I have made an electric arc furnace out of mots, i'm still alive, but I have been shocked by a nst before. Dads was an engineer he had no problem, he just said don't come crying to me. Sure its dangerous but you have to learn some way.

      @rortendaprojekts 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +sin4422 yeah, I also started with MOTs because its really hard to get an NST where I live, and I agree that learning on your own mistakes is really effective, (that is how I learned to always dicharge capacitors before working on things), but as far as MOTs go, you wont get to make that many mistakes, so here i kinda agree with Chris, better to start with something that won't kill you as easily.

    I see someone else already mentioned the nice coil-in-tube heating elements you can find in combi's.
    Personally, I suspect if you need to phase MOTs for more current it's probably time to think about a different transformer. Center tap out of phase sounds like a quick way to make a tasty cloud of smoke though, between overvolt and lack of good internal current limiting.

    Ok got a question for you. So beryllia is dangerous. Now problem is I happen to be a welder and I TIG weld all the time. The gas cups on a TIG welder look just like the ceramic in the magnetron. I have been looking around to see if the gas cups also contain beryllia with no luck. I have had cups shatter, brake, and been ground down to fit a weld. Does any one know if there is beryllia in the gas cup of a TIG welder? I don't want to come down with a case of Berylliosis.

    I JUST bought a new microwave and already noticed little roaches in the window and digital display. I live in Florida and am an extremely clean person, considering roaches love food and electricity this is basically inevitable. My question is, can I open all these parts up to safely clean? And is there an agent I can put inside that will deter roaches and not compromise my health when cooking food?

I'd building an arc welder out of 5, 2 in series, 2 in parallel and 1 as a ballast but want more info before trying it. I also built a Tesla coil like a year ago. Love high voltage, hate the shocks though.

    The magnetron on my year-old microwave died and the warranty repair tech let me keep the magnets and that braided brass ring. One of the magnets broke into 3 pieces but it and the full ring are both strong magnets. I'm not sure if the other one broke in removal or if it was reason for the magnetron's failure. Are you sure that braided ring isn't gold?

  • @MysticalDork
    @MysticalDork 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Okay. To everyone who is talking about discharging the HV capacitor, hear this: watch the video again and you will see a 10-megaohm resistor in parallel with the capacitor in the schematic diagram that came with the microwave. Every microwave capacitor I have taken apart (quite a few) also has a safety resistor built into the can. This means that unless you are taking the cap out thirty seconds after making a last bag of popcorn, you are TOTALLY SAFE!!

    • @physicsandmathemathicssimp833
      @physicsandmathemathicssimp833 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It surely is safe as long as it is not powered . They require power to run so it is safe to touch them as long as they are not connected to mains voltage . But if you have been experimenting with it hooked up to the microwave capacitor it is always a good idea to discharge your capacitor first before doing anything with your MOT hooked up to it .

  • @KaitharVideo
    @KaitharVideo 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Oh yeah, something else I wanted to ask ... what's the proper way to dispose of the magnetron? I'm sure there's gotta be a safer option than just chucking them in a trash can, but they don't exactly have "zomgcarcinogenic!" disposal bins next to the battery and oil ones.
    I suppose the local authority would know, though that risk some interesting questions.
    There's usually disposal rules on lead acids and mercury carriers and Be is certainly up there with them.

  • @thewii552
    @thewii552 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1
