  • A successful life usually depends on making four major commitments: to a spouse or family, a faith or philosophy, a community, and a vocation. But how do we choose what we will commit to, and how do we execute those commitments? In later years, is it possible to launch a new booster stage with new or additional commitments? (Yes.) This will be another exploration of a life well lived.

David Brooks seems an unlikely hero. I first heard his work on PBS, and was impressed with his nuanced insights and humble delivery. He always seems nervous until the better ideas begin to emerge, and his sincerity emerges right along with them.

Still one of my favorite people on earth whether speaking like this or interpreting politics on PBS with a decency, clarity and kindness that kept me sane for now 4+ years. Bravo, David. A man after God's own heart. Well done ♥️🙏

“Am I really serving my highest self?” best question I have heard...”adopt a moral lens” ..the truth lies right there!

David Brooks is opening up his figurative heart wide which is wonderful setting an example that is worth imitating.

I place piles on the carpet too, or on the bed, as I'm organizing my book. Loved hearing that, a kindred spirit.

David Brooks raises our conscience thinking..a passion to “get outside ourselves” ..commitment means we are “present” in every moment ..listen but hear..watch but see..

Mr Brooks and Father Spitzer should appear together as he wondrously weaves and completes Spitzer's Four Levels of Happiness.

Mr. Brooks describes the human heart and is so close, comes so close to the answer he seeks. CS Lewis describes this as a God shaped hole and thus, only God will fill it. Check out Tim Keller (cited by Mr Brooks) and Gospel in Life for a wealth of resources on life’s most vital questions.

Great arguments for making commitments. "Am I really serving my highest good? ..adopt a different lens ...beyond utilitarian thinking..the distant side of unselfishness not on this side.. what is life asking of me?"

...to our spouse (yes I promise to never fuck another) or family (yes I will do for you what you dont do for me - accept me as I am), our vocation (As if companies value loyalty), our community (couldnt care really) and our faith (no faith, only hopelessness).

I wish more republicans were like this guy. Seems like a "republican" I'd like to be around. I call myself a Democrat ... but I'm also an Atheist ... So, I'm more of a third party or maybe a independent. I've watched the Brooks and Capehart show on PBS for awhile, and often wondered how a republican can continue to talk on a Leftist new channel ... Maybe over time, the bias of speaking on democrat dominate news station may persuade a republican to bend left?

How WRONG this glib man is about narcissism. . He makes the huge error of mistaking vanity, and exaggerated self worth for narcissism. Two hugely different things. Narcissism is a personality disorder, whereby the person lacks empathy, lies at the flick of a coin, and is destructive and malevolent...etc.

David Brooks on PBS this week after the 4th of July call trump a "GENIUS" for building his policy attacking liberal and by David so call standard, This is his core value of conservative doctrine, Trump is a genius conservative. Go watch him bullshit again and again! Look up the characteristics of a psychopath. He is very good a lying. ..
