In other words, you need them for building both structures and units. Proxy Pylons take advantage of later-game tech that allows you to summon units anywhere within a power field instead of at a structure. Proxies are usually build close to an enemy base to decrease travel time... but not usually THAT close.
It's a good point. Also, the probe that was stuck inside the wall should have been set to attacking them since it couldn't do anything else, but you gotta admit, the guy must have been totally thrown for a loop by that crazy play.
