+Deborah Hoffman A journey into hell, unless he repents. Do not follow his example. Yeshua/Jesus of Nazareth is the Incarnation of Truth; you do not need Richard Gere. Rather, he needs Jesus. I realize that it used to fashiohable among white guys to dive into 'eastern religion'. How tiresome it is, like the last dregs of hippiedom, or 'new age' yuppiedom. Not the stuff to sustain suffering people! What, according to him, 'who you are is your responsibility'? No, we need a Savior, not more strength in ourselves. And you don't need to travel so far to get help. (Psalm 2:6) 'But as for Me, I have installed My King upon Zion, My holy mountain.'
J. Nothing wrong with Jesus. Many pathways to God. Christianity and Buddhism are two. In the end, not sure any religion will prevail. God is In All. As for me, I don't need salvation as I am already "saved" by the grace of God.
Very interesting listening to Mr Gere. He is a unique person. I live in rural Bihar on the railway line between Gaya and Howrah railway station. Twenty to thirty years ago travelling on that railway route was harsh. Mr Gere would travel on that line to stay on the land where Buddha gained enlightenment. I do research on how and why Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I would like Mr Gere to know I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you.
Interesting coversation. I am not a Buddist, however respect other people's believes's. I don't feel its necessary to go to a church or temple to pray or meditate. I believe in meditation and it has many beneifits, calming the mind being one.I also believe in reincarnation as its the only thing that makes sense to me . When we die our energy leaves the physical body, however does not die. I witnessed this happen when my father died and felt at peace as I knew deep down he was set free from pain and struggle. I also believe in karma which is very reassuring to know that bad deeds will catch up in the end. I basically feel I am a spirtual person , however brought up in a strict Catholic family.
+Shirley Meyer Blankenship My model of honesty is Yeshua, Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God, who cannot lie. But Gere has deluded himself. How can he be honest, no matter how hard he tries? (Jeremiah 17:9) 'The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?'
I'm learning more from Richard speaking here than all the western buddhist monks/nuns in the UK at present. Who talk a lot and say nothing and are of no help to anyone looking to learn.
I hear what Richards saying, its down to us but its not my fault our food is poisioned, the air polluted and our heads are getting buzzed with microwaves and wifi.
I resonate with Buddhism and its many truths. But, I also love Jesus. I don't see this as incongruous. It's organized Christianity that I don't totally buy into.
+Deborah Hoffmann Your is a common objection. But first let's be honest about the SCANDAL of Jesus' exclusive claims ('I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me'). Why did He get into trouble with the Pharisees, the most observant 'religious' of the time? Precisely because He claimed to be God, for which they accused Him of blasphemy; whereupon they urged Pilate to execute Him (which Pilate did, as a self-interested political favor). And Jesus knew perfectly well what was to happen to Him and why; it had been prophesied by the Hebrew prophets. (Isaiah 53:5) 'But He was pierced through for our transgression; He was crushed for our iniquities; the chstening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.' Very possibly you know the story of how God revealed Himself to Moses in the desert, in the burning bush which was not consumed, and how He identified Himself as 'I AM'. When Jesus confronted the Pharisaic party (John 8:24), He was surely referring to this incident when He said: 'Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.' Now we do not even have to be 'religious' in order to acknowledge that we ' 'fall short' in what we do as humans; and 'missing the mark' is the meaning of the word translated as 'sin' in New Testament. Also from the Old Testament it was the very strong connotation of uncleanness, unfitness, of something loathsome to God. Sin is not just wrong actions or neglect of right ones, but a principle, a state of being, living in alienation from God. 'The wages of sin is death' (Romans 6:23). However people try to recast or redefine sin in different religious 'traditions', sin continues to confuse our minds and undermine our relationships, leading to wars and unending suffering. The Kingdom of God, which Jesus came to inaugurate, is surely about saving individual souls from the dominion and penalty of sin, making them acceptable to God ('for Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness'), but it is ALSO about increasing justice and evetually redeeming the whole of Creation. Therefore Jesus' own resurrection is incredibly important, not only as a seal upon the authority of His words and ministry, but also as a signpost toward the ultimate future realization of the Kingdom of God. (As for witnesses to the Resurrection, these are listed in the 15th chapter of 1st Corinthians.) If you could bear with me thus far, I am grateful. Now as for the faults of churches as institutions, it would be pointless to deny those, for sinful humans are involved. But the Church of Scripture, the body of believers in Jesus across time and space, is not identical with a particular denomination or even the sum of them. There are people who attend church who do not truly believe, just as there are some who do not attend church who do (though they are losing something precious if they set themselves apart from the community!). Nevertheless faith demands concrete expression, and that requires organization. I believe that God has given mankind certain institutions for our blessing, such as family (extending to tribe or nation), state or government, and for ancient Israel the ordinances of the Law of Moses (including the priesthood). Finally we have the Church, which in its universal and spiritual sense, is the only institution extending into eternity (as Scripture tells it). But privileges of membership in any of these institutions may be abused; and when one handles holy things presumptuously, the result may be disastrous. So usually when people accuse Christians (or so-called Christians) of committing this or that crime, I say, 'but Jesus never commanded them to do it.'
Those who are selling “Jesus is great” here think God cares if you call daddy as papa or dad or father or padre. Just like a father would love his child whatever they call him, why should Christians and Muslims worry what others call their Daddy? If the Daddy really cared- he would have made his anger felt, isn’t it?
'Who you are is your responsibility.' Really? Sounds oh-so-holy, but not factually correct. Just think for a moment, Richard. Were you born by your own will? Did you receive your reputed 'good looks' by your own virtue? Did you feed and clothe yourself while you were a baby, and were you responsible for your own education from start to finish? Did you never receive help from anyone? Did you never accept a favor in your life? I'll bet that, once or twice, when someone has accused you of something, you have said, 'it's the fault of so-and-so.' GOD CREATED YOU AND SUSTAINS YOU IN HIS MERCY. YOU ARE A SINNER, "FOR ALL HAVE SINNED AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD." If you do not repent and receive Jesus, Who paid the penalty for our sins and rose from the dead in victory, you will perish forever. (2nd Peter 3:9) "THE LORD IS NOT SLOW ABOUT HIS PROMISES, AS SOME COUNT SLOWNESS, BUT IS PATIENT TOWARD YOU, NOT WISHING FOR ANY TO PERISH BUT FOR ALL TO COME TO REPENTANCE."
Jesus is Lord ... What he meant is ... U choose to be who you are ... Intellectually ... Physical form was Genetically handed down, and to some extent built by you(again your choice) .... But what you THINK ... Is completely YOUR CHOICE!
