- In 1958 Momofuku Ando developed a new food with the goal to help end hunger in Japan. You might be surprised to hear that that food was instant ramen. But every day, an estimated 290 million people eat instant noodles. Instant ramen and Cup Noodles have become a staple of supermarkets around the world. And over 100 billion servings of instant noodles are consumed every year. So, how did a 48-year-old businessman who knew almost nothing about making noodles start a multibillion-dollar industry?

How Instant Ramen Became An Instant Success | Billion Dollar Breakthrough
The first time I ever ate Ramen was when my mothers food stamps got cancelled and we had to get food from a church donation center. Mr. Ando definitely did a great service to humanity with his affordable and filling invention.

This isn't quite true! The founder of instant noodles was actually a Taiwanese named ZHANG,GUO-WEN 張國文, who got inspiration from a type of fried chicken soup noodles 雞絲麵. I live in Central Vietnam where floods and typhoons used to be very frequent sights. Instant noodles were considered a major emergency ration for regions isolated by high water since they can be eaten raw or with warm water when rice becomes difficult to store and cook due to electricity and gas shortages. Even when life has been good and I hardly eat noodles anymore these days I will forever be grateful to Mr. Ando for this wondrous invention.

@@heresjohnny602 Dude I'm in a good place in life now but about 8 years ago I was broke and not through any fault of my own. After rent and utilities I was still left with like $20 in my bank account because my job didnt pay much at the time. Ramen was a great way to get cheap food. I have never smoked, drank alcohol, played the lottery and didn't even eat out much. I was poor because my job didnt pay much. Like I said now I'm way better off but for many many people it's not a choice or a fault to be poor, it just happens and is a part of life for people who don't have the privilege or help otherwise. I worked hard to get a better job but it took time.
My teenager taught me how to up my ramen game. Now i add veggies or boiled eggs and sometimes leftover chicken but my favorite is adding a small spoonful of peanut butter which gives it a wonderful flavor. Obviously i don't add all those things at once it just depends on what's leftover in the fridge 🙂 I just wish the sodium wasn't so high in the flavor packet. Using half the sodium packet is less salty but also less flavor. I'd like the best of both worlds, all the flavor and half the salt.
My favorite is Shin Spicy Chicken and I only add 1/2 the packet, adding garlic, and a slice of craft cheese once cooked. So good!
It would be beneficial to many people if they could add flavor with out as much sodium an example the Beef Maruchan / ramen noodle soup is 720 mgs for 1/2 the noodle and flavor packet or 1440mgs for the entire packet . Will check it's likely Top Ramen numbers are close

There were some hard times I had to go through and at our local family dollar, a 5 pack of ramen was exactly $1 and could last me the day at least. Fast forward now to where times are better for me and I'll still buy packs of ramen because I don't forget where I came from. Say what you want about ramen, but it can warm you in more than 1 way.

43 years later, it is still one of my favorite comfort foods.
It’s so delicious and helps keeps us fed through these uncertain times 70 years later.
I can confirm that ramen is a big thing for Egyptians as well especially amongst students both in school and college. We spend long hours between school and extracurricular activities that we rarely get to go home for lunch or dinner so we have ramen from one of the many stands available at every turn. We call them Endomi after the most popular company that makes them here.
Indomie is Indonesian brand founded by Chinese Indonesian. Co-incidentally Ando Momofuku is actually Taiwan-born Hokkien Chinese, his birthname was Go Pek Hok, he later married his Japanese wive and changed his surname ho his wive's surname. Yes, Ando is surname of the wife.
I've been to the Cup Noodles museum in Yokohama, Japan. I even got to hand make my own package of ramen from dough and i also got to make a custom cup of ramen as well with ingredients of my choosing. Such a cool place to visit if you're ever in Japan!
It's true that one person with a goal, and the determination to meet that goal, can really change the world. If only more people were like this man.

He made instant noodles he didn't cure cancer. If you're not lazy u can buy dry noodles and add spice for the same price or even cheaper
I'm a Cup Noodle man myself, I had two yesterday! I only wish we could get the huge array of flavors they offer in Japan here in the U.S.
A little story about the Cup Noodle the video didn't mention: in 1972, the Asama-Sansō incident (a hostage crisis/police stakeout) happened in the mountains and it was widely broadcast around Japan with very high viewership. Because all the food froze quickly when they are taken up to the mountains, the cops relied on Cup Noodles which can be eaten with boiling water from kettles, which popularised the product.
You can, you just have to find a local market with imports, my local place is a very Japanese/Korean convenience market and they sell many different delicious native foods.
Seriously, Japanese are resilient SOBs! Respect 🙌
I have grown up eating this, and they sure have come in a pinch as I struggle through college. Cheap, affordable and tasty. Love it.
God bless Momofuko Ando. Ramen has always been there during times of hardship for me.
I've seen people cook these and I know it could be pretty obvious but you can still add your own meat and vegetables to them if you want more. Sometimes people cook the ramen and basically that's it but I add protein to mine like eggs, vegetables and my protein of choice. I think it's also affordable too which is great but you're not limited to just what's in the bag. Advice for if you're on a budget.
This is how I survived in my college days.
I remember one time my cousin who thinks she watches what she and her kids eat a lot saw me preparing an instant soup for my nephew and she started telling me how bad it was, that if i left one of the soups out for days i would see how it turns and that it would show me how bad they were.
So i told her, leave any food out for days and see what happens.
lol
It's not that bad anyway. Don't drink all the broth. That will control the sodium. And then after you eat, go outside and play or take a walk or dance. Burn the calories. Ramen is fuel for that and it's fine.
I watched a Japanese tv drama on him. He lived an amazing life. So many ups and downs. Great man.
Also, I hope others also watch the drama. It's through his wife's perspective. But such an inspirational story.

Thanks for introducing the story to English speaking world. What wasn’t mentioned in the video: Mr. Ando 安藤さん was originally from Taiwan named Baifu Wu 吳百福, born during Japanese colonization. He moved to Japan in his early 20s. After World War II, he changed his last name to Ando and then regained Japanese nationality. Ando was his third wife’s last name. It was not widely known but controversial whether Mr. Ando was really the inventor of instant noodles. Two other Taiwanese origins, acquaintances of Mr. Ando’s, claimed they were the inventors. Every one of them obtained patents about the same time. Apparently Mr. Ando was the smart one who successfully marketing it.

Ando's biggest accomplishment was the flavor, not the noodle. Before instant ramen, it was difficult to get restaurant quality ramen flavors at home. Making it from scratch is actually difficult. But Instant Ramen got the flavor close enough, and the noodles were good, and it was fast and cheap. Ando managed to solve several very difficult problems all at once. That's his real genious. Nissin also had some terrific marketing, like one of the greatest ad campaigns of all time: "Hungry? Cup Noodle" with various animated cavemen fighting giant crabs and mo monsters for food when they could have just made Cup Noodle. Absolutely wonderful. I happily enjoy Nissin ramen almost everyday. There is almost no better way to get a filling meal for so little money. And this is why canned soup is dying as an industry. You can pay nearly $1.50 for one can of soup which is mostly water and a few noodles, and serve two bowls. Or you can take two packs of ramen, jammed with noodles and a tasty broth and make two bigger bowls for about 50 cents and feel like you had a good meal. It's not even a contest.
Growing up in Thailand. The traffic jams. The sewers overflow. Teachers beat students. The military removes the military takeover government by military takeover. Alcoholics. Drug addicts. STDs. Abusive family. But no matter what instant noodles instantly melts away the pain for all.

And youd be surprised. Soup sandwiches and goulash bricks. The menu is endless. Meats and cheetos and cheese squeezes, bean and rice as add ons. There is a ton of stuff on commissary. As I said. You'd be surprised. And if you are getting 100 sack of commisary every week. You can literally cook and eat exclusively from that. Indeed some people do. They won't eat the "state" or prison food. In my college days, literally no day without at least 1 pack of noodles... sometimes just for snack and eat the noodles dry, without cooking it... i easily eat about 15-20 packs a week...
in my 20s, this is the peak of my noodles consumption, since now i usually eat 3 packs in one serving, and my personal record is 5 packs, plus 2 eggs... i even try to mix the flavor, i eat 3 packs of noodles with 3 different flavors, and somehow still delicious... i eat about 20-25 packs a week...
and now in my 30s, my consumption decline, because i already married in this time, and have a wife too cook me more healthy food... but still i consumed about 5 to 10 packs per week...

I ate it everyday during my childhood. I got so sick of it though lol. I would put sour cream and hot sauce to change up the flavor. I still enjoy them randomly from time to time, but I'm so happy I don't have to eat them everyday anymore.
My favourite ramen ever. It is amazing to see how this was developed. Eye opening, appreciative, learning many lessons. Well done.
Without ando we all are eating boring breakfast and lunch and dinner all day. I appreciate the invention of the instant noodles I eat it for breakfast
Ramen got me through my college years!
I love instant noodles and I add carrots, frozen peas, corn, etc. while boiling the water. I also add hard boiled eggs which make them more delicious as well as nutritious.
Never liked eggs in ramen. I'd put cabbage, tomatoes peas and thai chillie peppers in mine, with a but of seasoning too. I've done corn before as well.
@@shawnjavery Nice, I don't like potato or cauliflower in ramen. I prefer boiled eggs as it is easy to make and in India it popular to add spicy scrambled eggs or any other type in some places.
Also, I like ramen dry, I only use half the recommended water as it feels spicier IMHO and firmer.
@@kurroth not really a fan of the taste of eggs personally.
Romen is t healthy at all lol
@@Ccubed92 reread it, he said adding eggs makes it more nutritious, not that ramen was healthy.
