My dad ate a lot of skunk during the "hungry thirties". He said it was ok. He said they, his family, ate rabbit, squirrel, musk rat, beaver, especially beaver tail etc. Whatever was available they would eat it, he said. Very tough times. Probably like the early settlers who ate whatever the environment supplied. I don't remember him describing making flour from acorns though.
Hunting and having a garden makes you self-sufficient and grateful for what you have. It is better than factory food for your health. Cities are poison on the soul and spirit.
I’ve eaten most of the meats listed in the video. Only exceptions are skunk and brains. Every one of them are good. However I would say rabbit and squirrel are my favorite. Especially when you cook them in a stew or do a dish like squirrel and dumplings. I grew up hunting and one of the most important rules taught was you eat what you hunt.
My grandpa was the same way. 9 brothers n sisters, they only ate what they shot. He taught me everything he knew about trapping, hunting and fishing starting when I was an infant. I’m 26 now and teaching the next generation his stuff along with everything I know about mushrooms and foraging.
I specialize in pre-civil war military archaeology. Fort Massachusetts in Colorado was in operation from 1852-1858. We find tons of oyster tins, worcestershire sauce bottles, and lots of broken beer and wine bottles! We have a surviving letter from 1856 and it was from a Private to his mother back in Boston. in that letter he reminisces about being home in the United States and he talks about buying a steak and cooking it next to the creek with canned oysters and champagne to drink! Absolutely one of the worst meals I've ever had in my life but for that man at that time, it was a heavenly slice of home!
Cowboys had massive herds of beef obviously expensive and they're paid to bring them in but am absolutely shore that one or ten got old got lame "wandered off" got predated on by ahem "wolves" and ended up in cowboy bellies!
Are you American? Meant with respect. I love how we have so many communities from all over. Scandanavians, Little Italy, Chinatown, Amish etc. How lucky I am to have been born here. Salute to you wherever you are.
