The Alamo defenders hardly used their cannons during the battle, because they were forced from the walls (leaving their cannons), and hid in the rooms surrounding the plaza. On the second day of the siege, General Ampudia's artillerymen knocked out the big 18-pounder cannon, hence it was never used in the battle. A few others were knocked out along the west wall, facing the Mexican artillery position. As a matter of fact, during the battle, Ampudia, and his men, turned the Alamo cannons on the defenders while they were in the rooms, forcing a rout out of the east side of the compound, where they were all killed by Gen. Sesma's lancers. Over a 100 of them sought to escape, but all were cut down. It's nice that every year, all of Texas celebrates a Mexican victory!
Roger Borroel right? You would think with disparity of casualties, (650 Mexicans killed, 208 wounded, and 300 captured vs 11 Texans killed and 30 wounded), the Battle of San Jacinto would be much more celebrated. And it lasted like 18 minutes. Just a rout.
Yes, the Mexicans at the San Jacinto Massacre were ambushed and routed....most armies do get routed, just give them time! Even American armies were routed during the Civil War, both sides!
Roger Borroel exactly!! Exactly right!! Just basically a slaughter. And with the way Santa Ana was captured and the outcome of the battle you never hear much about it. Oh yes, the Americans on both sides of the American Civil War were routed. As war have evolved over the last 200 years the ambush has become a key tactic in strategy.

Such is war!
Roger Borroel How embarrassing to be whipped so soundly after having come so far.
