My Grandmother worked for Boeing and designed Jaquelin Kennedy's Personal Bathroom!!! She was a master vinyl layer! I believe she covered all of the interior of the plane but the First Lady's Lavatory was her very own design!!!!! So proud of her!!!!!
My grandpa helped work on it too. He was a well respected sheet metal instructor at Boeing. I had/ have a pic of him and some other employees standing in front of it.
@Greg Bloomfield Consider, too, that Hoover himself the same long and cozy relationship with organized crime, going so far as to declare that it didn't exist. I don't see the relevance of LBJ's oath aboard AF1: the Constitution mandates an immediate transfer of power, once a sitting President is dead or found to be incapacitated. LBJ may have wanted the famous pictures taken when they were as a token of unbroken leadership, with Mrs. Kennedy beside him. It is interesting to note that LBJ took control of the Dallas investigation and turned it over to the FBI, when the murder of a President was still not considered a federal crime.
I visited SAM 26000 in 2003. It's located in a very large multi-hanger section of Wright Field that we had to board a bus to get to (at that time) on the far side of the field outside of Dayton, Ohio. There are many presidential aircraft within that hanger facility but this one (was of particular interest) to me. I was only 16 years old when JFK was shot but I remember that day like it was yesterday. As a pilot, when I saw the cockpit of that airplane I could see how simple it all was. No glass cockpit, all "steam gauges" and certainly NO GPS at all. It was pretty basic. I only saw this airplane one other time in person and that was in 1972 when Nixon and his wife Pat landed on St. Croix U.S.V.I. (for a vacation on St. John in 1972). I lived on St. Croix at the time. The president exited the airplane and then walked over to the terminal area where I was standing with many other people and I got to shake Nixon's hand that day. He looked me right in the eye too, as I did him. He looked much older and very tired than he did in the media photos of the time. I couldn't ever forget how shiny that airplane was. I went out to the airport at night to see it again. It was parked on a section of the apron where it was not close to any other aircraft. Lights where positioned all around it that shined on the airplane and military guards were posted all around it. It sure looked beautiful. Never in a million years did I imagine one day being allowed to board that airplane. What a great day it was.
N Russell they moved everything in that hangar into the new fourth building at the main museum complex. Bus rides and previous authorizations are no longer required to see or walk through this aircraft (or the other presidential aircraft).
What a great story! Thank you for taking the time to share it with us. I take my grandsons to the museum 3 or 4 time a year, (we only live 20 minutes away) and I still get a sense of pride everytime I see SAM 26000, and the chills whenever I board it and stand in the very spot that Johnson took the oath of office!
I have been there that's one of my favorite places to visit. I went inside this plane several times there were other presidential aircraft there at the time. The plane that Eisenhower flew in was there.
I am green with envy. I too remember November 22, 1963 like it was yesterday. I turned 17 just 29 days later. So we are the same "vintage". President Nixon came to my neck of the woods to dedicate a new school named after President Eisenhower. Air Force One flew into Selfridge Air Force Base (outside of Detroit) for the occasion. My father worked at base operations and my wife and four kids and I (along with several hundred others) were there to greet the president when he landed. The three memories that stand out for me that day are the secret service searching our baby's diaper bag, the president had on a ton of makeup on, and after I shook his hand he patted our baby daughter on the cheek. It was quite a while after the plane's scheduled departure that a frustrated major at Cleveland Control called my father to tell him that if SAM 26000 didn't take off in the next 15 minutes he wouldn't get clearance for take off for another hour and a half. My father told the officer that SAM 26000 is Air Force One and he would not make any such demand. He offered to patch the major through directly to the pilot. After a long pause, there were a few choice swear words from Cleveland directed at my dad and that was the end of that. SAM 26000 took off about 45 minutes later with no flack from anyone at Cleveland Control.
All of these many years later, it is still so painful to look at. I can still see JFK and Jackie smiling broadly as they exited the plane in Dallas, Texas.
My father worked in the radar and antenna research lab at Boeing and was one of the people that built the antennas and radio/communication equipment on this aircraft. When it was done he also did all the radio noise testing before it was delivered. They ran all the electronic systems to see that they worked and didn’t interfere with each other. He also worked on all the 707 type aircraft that were used as AF1.
For someone who as a child flew to many corners of the world aboard civil Boeing 707s, visiting this beautiful airplane was like coming home. Along with the two VC-137B aircraft (Boeing 707-120 series) and SAM 27000, this is the best preserved Boeing 707, with all those "Space-Age" interior fixtures still in place. Yes, she has a very special place in my heart.

This plane is soooo gorgeous in every way, probably one of my favourite aircraft and to be honest every aircraft made are all awesome to me and I adore all aircraft
My wife & I spent the day at the museum in the summer of 2020. If you have the time, spend 2 days there. It’s a great place. Excellant exhibits with every aircraft. This plane is a great piece of history and you can walk thru it. 👍 We care !!!
I tested a stabilizer jackscrew for an Air Force 707 with an Air Force inspector. Later I was told it was for Air Force 1. I can’t confirm that, but it one of many sources of pride in my 35 years as a aircraft mechanic technician.
Went thru it a couple weeks ago. The interior is protected by glass and the aisle is narrow. But it is a thought provoking and awesome experience to see when there are no crowds. Tons of history inside there. Makes it all real and maybe feel immediate.
I remember being inside an aircraft that took a delay while this aircraft was departing after President Reagan and his wife had been visiting the first lady's father in Phoenix. I wasn't happy with the delay yet seeing this beautiful aircraft taking off outside my window was cool.
I'm glad to see that President Kennedy's Air Force one is being taken care of an displayed so that we can educate our children & grandkids of that terrible event that led to his death ! Thanks for sharing !
Haven't had the honor or privilege to visit the National Museum of the USAF yet but once the pandemic is over it is absolutely #1 on my list! To be immersed and surrounded by so much history, to hear the stories of the people that have built our USAF, to see the equipment that has helped ensure our position as a world power and kept us all safe and free, there will be no more incredible feeling than that, God bless the USA and the USAF!!!
This Plane is the crown jewel of all the planes at the museum.... I visited the air museum and was on this plane.... I was so excited to be on the plane....you go from front of plane to the rear end door to go down off the plane.....all my young life in the 60's Ive seen this aircraft on TV.....never did I ever think of someday actually seeing the plane up close and going aboard her..... Thank everyone connected with getting the 2600 at the museum in Dayton Oh....Wright Patterson air base........God bless the USA !
My dad has a orange pin that the secret service gave him to be able to escort Lyndon Johnson through the Marriott he was working in at the time in Atlanta.
Been there, it's incredible to be allowed to get onboard and see what those presidents saw, be where they were for long stretches of time. Sadly I didn't get much time onboard because the museum was closing for the day. But i'd HIGHLY recommend the museum for anyone in the Dayton, Ohio area. It's absolutely mind boggling what they have there on display (the Valkyrie has an amazing presence). I could have spent days there. Many thanks for all those involved who have worked hard to make it available to the public. :)
I live in Columbus Ohio and on 9/11/01 I was standing out in front of where I work at about 5pm(long after all civilian air traffic was grounded) and a co-worker points up and says, "Look! Air Force One!". I said, "That's not funny". I looked up and it was way up there but you could still kind of make out the color scheme, and there was an F-16 off of each wing. I later found out that Bush was flying to Andrews AFB from Offutt AFB in Nebraska at the time. I felt a kind of pride that those bastards tried to destroy our country and our government was still functioning.

Wish he had talked more about Nixon's visit to China in this plane. IMO that was ground-breaking history and diplomacy that has changed the world in so many ways we never could have imagined back in 1972.
I am English but the Boeing 707 to us was the iconic symbol of the 'Jet Age' and JFK of course gave us all hope for The Brave New World. Congratulations to everyone involved with the preservation of this remarkable and beautiful aircraft. God Bless America.
If you’re English the jet age aircraft for you should be the De Havilland Comet, equally fantastic aircraft that had a lot of teething issues unfortunately . Of course nothing surpassed Concorde
I walked through this aircraft many, many years ago. Visiting Wright Patterson was an experience I will never forget. Between walking through Air Force One and seeing the Bockscar in person, it was quite a surreal day.
Beautiful aircraft... I do love that livery but the 707 is just such beautiful design. Look at how she sits on the tarmac - IMO far better looking than any of the modern day jets and must be one of the most beautiful ever made.
She had to stand there knowing LBJ was the chief facilitator of everyone that was involved in the murder of JFK. Cui bono? Whose bonus? Who benefited the most from JFK's death? Ask yourself "If elements of the Intelligence Community (CIA) and the Italian mobsters were involved, who better could make sure that a coverup and an "official narrative" be ready for the media within hours on the patsy, Lee Harvey Oswald?" He was "packaged" with his story to take the blame. And then Jack Ruby was right there to make sure Oswald didn't talk. We're coming down to the final answers on Kennedy's assassination with just small bits but sensational pieces of information left to be unsealed. It's time. I was 13 when Kennedy was murdered and I will soon turn 70. All the characters of that drama are dead and gone. It's time to know the truth.

As a grade school kid in the 1960's this plane was a very big symbol of the Presidency. If you look back at old newsreel footage it was the star of the show. Raymond Loewy who designed the paint scheme also designed the classic shaped Coke bottle and the Studebaker Avanti along with many other famous things.
The last time I was at Dayton museum,This plane was already on the tarmac, but wasnt open for showing. Afraid I missed my chance, really wanted to get close to that part of history!
Great respect and memory for Mr President John Fitzgerald Kennedy 🇺🇲 🕊️🕯️ Great respect for all those who created this wonderful and extraordinary machine Air Force One 🇺🇲 🛫 Greetings from 🇵🇱 🇵🇱🤝🇺🇲
I was only five when JFK was assassinated. The event became close to my heart one of the highlights of my life was visiting the HF Museum in Michigan. When I saw the presidential lemosene there, I FROZE! I don't think I moved a mussel for several minutes. I relived the reality of the famous film from that day in my mind. It has been my dream to visit the memorial of my other presidential hero, Abe Lincoln one day. I am 62 now and that hope is fading.
The first president to fly using the call sign Air Force one, l do believe was President Dwight Eisenhower in 1953 after a near mid air collision with a commercial aircraft EA 8610, when his call sign which was AF 8610 got mixed-up by air traffic control. The 2 Boeing 707's which were retired are known today as JFK's air force one (26000) & President Reagan's Air force one (27000). Which leads to an interesting question. When the present 'Angel aeroplanes' 28000 & 29000 are retired, to which of the former presidents are in line for the honour of having these aeroplanes as their air force one?. I am pretty sure that one will go to the Bush family, but the other is up for grabs. Any suggestions whom should get the honour?. Interesting video.
I wonder if in the condition it is right now if it could still fly , I know it needs to be serviced, all the liquids replaced but if they gave it a full fluid treatment could it fly ?
SAM 27000, a matching 707 that was in service when JFK was murdered, went on to be the primary AF One for Ford, Carter, and Reagan. Daddy Bush took delivery of the 1st 747. SAM 27000 is also a museum piece at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, CA north of Los Angeles. I walked through it and the space is cramped and small for everyone including the president and his wife. No luxury at all. The Library paid for the disassembly of the SAM 27000 when it was retired, paid for it to be flown to Edwards Air Force Base and there loaded on trucks. The caravan of trucks had to drive from Edwards through Los Angeles through the San Fernando Valley at night when the streets could be closed for such a wide and long load on each truck. Then the trucks has to go up a steep incline on the mountainside that the Library was being constructed, off-loaded, then the plane was reassembled as workmen built it's display pavillion around it. It's quite an amazing engineering feat. If you are in that area it is well worth your time and $25 a head to go through the library (even you don't like Reagan) just to see the plane in its pavillion.
SurfinUSA I have a better idea: why don’t you look it up for yourself? That way, you’ll be in the habit of fact-checking before you post something that’s factually incorrect.
I’ve been to the Reagan library to to see this aircraft. I’ve also been to Nixon library to see and walk through the helicopter that he left on after his resignation. Very interesting.
I got a chance to board this aircraft when I was in Seattle years ago. It was a cold rainy day and I basically had the aircraft to myself. All I could think about was President Kennedy casket being carried up those stairs at the rear of the aircraft after being assassinated. I remember seeing where the bulkhead had been repaired and where the plexiglass was fixed in place. I really didn't get to enjoy the aircraft for what it was.
I watched it fly it's last flight into Dayton, Ohio. That thing is really loud!! A beautiful airplane. I was 10 years old when President Kennedy was assassinated!! It was announced over the speakers in our 4th grade class.
Clayton Sam 26000 was NOT the first jet to be used as AF 1 that would be SAM970 which is in the Museum of Flight Seattle. It was not specifically built for the AF but purchased and converted, but it was the first, its sister ship is at the Pima Museum in Tucson Ariz !!!! FYI !!!
My uncle worked at Boeing in Washington State. He worked on the secret communication equipment in the plane. It was very involved. Other aircraft would be in the air to communicate with Air Force One so as to relay the communication. Very primitive by today's standards. About 1974, I walked right up to the aircraft at Andrews. My cousin worked on Army aircraft at Andrews. Eaglegards... P.S. I got drafted and sent to the Republic of Vietnam by LBJ.
@@ElevateandEmpower365 many people do not know that. You do, I do but poll 100 people today. I bet less than 20% have a clue. Please don’t think because you know something that everyone does.
@@Mr5150Sarge everyone has seen the pic of LBJ taking the oath on the plane, plus it is the first time a woman has sworn in a president, plus they phoned bobby kennedy to ask him for the words for a proper inauguration ....did you know any of those other facts?
I saw this aircraft depart ORD in the early 90's, then worked it's arrival into SFO mid to late 90's with the VP on board. We had it nose to tail with the B747, wish I had a camera at the time.
I trust that since this video was produced, that SAAM ( (S)pecial (A)ssignment (A)irlift (M)ission) (NOT SAM) 26000 has received the proper exterior care she needs. Very embarrasing to see chemical streaks about her entire fuselage.
That was one of the conspiracies. But we are the only country, that I know of, that has such a smooth transition of power. LBJ had to take the oath asap to insure that transition. I was a senior in high school. It was one of those days you never forget.
TheAznative101 I was in class, second grade... very skeptical of the "established" version of events that took place on that day, with actions pre and post mortum... Jackie commenting that "he" didn't look like John, after the coroner's exam... GHWB knew what happened and probably answered for it before he left... Johnson was all too eager to be sworn in... smooth transition indeed.
@@Sweetteawillie I am still skeptical of what happened. Why didn't Connolly's wife let the forensic team harvest the remains of the bullet in his arm? That would have shed more light on what bullet hit him and or Kennedy. I am not hear to go over conspiracy theories from 50 some years ago. The video is the history of this airplane. It transported Kennedy to Bush. Who is GHWB and how does he factor into this. GHWB if you are referring to Bush 43 was about your age back then. I don't think LBJ was chomping at the bit to be potus. From the time of JFK's death to dark when ever that was we had no president. Again LBJ was vice president. The time lapse is not as important as the history of this aircraft. I suppose we can talk about Ford falling down stairs...JFK was more or less a footnote in the history of this plane.
The other VC-137C Is at the City or Seattle, Washington, at the Museum of Flight, In Boeing Field (AKA King County Airport) near the 787, 747, and Concorde.
As important as SAM 26000, they should at least keep it polished as it's sister ship SAM 27000 at the Reagan library. I'm glad 26000 is at Wright Patterson.
The plane on which President Kennedy and the First Lady flew to Texas in November 1963. Also, the plane in which Kennedy's remains were returned from Dallas to Washington, DC on November 22, 1963.
My Uncle Maurice Mullen was the pilot on Air Force One during the Carter Administration. He flew bombing missions over Germany in WWII . He said Carter was not a nice guy. A bit of an asshole.
Kevin Lynch any man flying bombing missions over another country would be rattled by it, especially if he had to assume the challenging duties of President of the United States at the same time. I think your uncle was being a little unkind and unforgiving to President Carter; certainly no need for such language.
This was a sad day for us here in Dallas that day all though I did not really understand being 6 years old, but with my Dad was at Love Feild and watched this plane come in to the airport. Also got to watch President and Mrs. Kennedy drive past where we were.

Could you imagine having to stand there with another man as he swore in as the elected official your own husband was no more than an hour ago? An hour ago that you saw your own husband's brain come out of his head? Just wow.
Delta Foxtrot, At the top, just above the jet engine intake? They are part of the cabin air conditioning and pressurization systems. One interesting thing is that the original 707 only had them for engines 2 and 3. Later on for later versions of the 707 they added one for engine number 4. There are some 707s that have them for all four engines.
Delta Foxtrot, From what I have read the turbo-compresors reduced, but did not eliminate, the use of bleed air for pressurization, heating, and cooling of the fuselage.
Delta Foxtrot, I took a structural repair class from a Boeing engineer. Surprisingly he stated that Boeing selected some of the worse aluminum alloys for the B707. They were not really good at dealing with stress corrosion cracking. He also admitted that the fuselage skin lap joints were problematic. He actually praised the DC-8 in these areas. Those decisions were some of the reasons why some commercial DC-8s were flying long after almost all commercial B707s were grounded. While the 707 and 727 were impressive, they have some characteristics that are bewildering. The double bubble fuselage cross section for one. A simple circular fuselage cross section would probably have been better over the life cycle of those aircraft. Slightly larger and taller landing gear would have helped later on when the inevitable fuselage lengthening occurred.
Delta Foxtrot , The newer fly by wire aircraft are designed with lessons learned from decades of previous problems. Interior occupant safety is better. Survivable crash protection is increased. The latest dual HUD category III CERTIFIED airliners are safer during final approach. We have some amazing automatic braking systems. No, I have to disagree with you. I will take the latest B777, B787, or A350 over what we had previously for transoceanic travel.
Interesting photo with President and Mrs Carter along side of Nixon and President Ford. Nixon resigned in August 1974 and Carter announced in December 1974. Just curious as to how they ended up on Airfare One at the same time. Looked it up and it was when Nixon, Ford and Carter represented Reagan at Anwar Sadats funeral in 1981. It was just and interesting photo to me.
Ottonturk , No, I think it was more about "bids" from different aviation museums. The bids were about how the museum would display the aircraft, annual attendence projections, etcetera. Not any money paid for the aircraft. There were huge competitions in such museum"bidding" for the Concordes and the Space Shuttles.

The DoD doesn't play around with many museum acquires. You have to present a viable restoration for display plan and a maintenance for display plan. We are probably going to have to give up our B-52D as the increase in corrosion outpaces our maintenance fundraising.

What also makes this plane very special ... This was the plane where they exchanged the coffins and performed the secret autopsy altering the head wound before it landed back in DC.
EricIrl, Interesting. I have read of the severe disagreements about those ventral fins. I believe that the UK aviation authorities originally mandated it for the BOAC 707s due to yaw stability issues under some flight conditions. I think high AOA was one. Boeing installed them, but always felt they were not really needed. One reason for the design of the B747 vertical stabilizer and rudder was said to be to get the UK approval without them demanding a ventral fin. The entire issue of the sizing of empennage control surfaces for those early jetliners is interesting. I have read that the DC-8s were disliked by pilots for their relatively small vertical fins and rudders.
@@davidhoffman1278 The ventral fin was added to the 707-420, which had Rolls-Royce Conway engines, to meet British requirements. Only 37 of those were built, most for BOAC. The fin was carried over to the -320B series, of which 26000 was part. Those had P&W JT3Ds, which left the Conway in the dust. Also the vertical fin was very noticeably taller and narrower than the earlier -120 versions. The subsequent Advanced version included other refinements that eliminated the need for the ventral fin; successor 27000, being an Adv, lacked that fin.
@@smwca123 , Thanks. I will have to research the Advanced versions to see if I can find the other technologies you hinted at. Yaw and pitch control design and engineering is a competition between wanting low cruise drag and wanting positive control at all possible AOAs. USofA jetliner designers and engineers were somewhat notorious for undersizing pitch and yaw controls in their aircraft. After control problems arose during flight testing or service use they had to increase the size of the control surfaces to make the aircraft handle correctly.
I was stationed at Holloman AFB NM in the mid 70s. The President (Ford or Carter) was in El Paso TX and 26000 came to Holloman as backup to be near by if needed. I now live near Dayton Oh and see it on a regular basis at the Museum.

N Russell Great Story
All of these many years later, it is still so painful to look at. I can still see JFK and Jackie smiling broadly as they exited the plane in Dallas, Texas.
She is a beautiful plane, and I remember that horrific time almost as if it was yesterday....Hope to visit this plane someday...

It's the most beautiful airplane I hope the see it again now at the museum some day.
Went thru it a couple weeks ago. The interior is protected by glass and the aisle is narrow. But it is a thought provoking and awesome experience to see when there are no crowds. Tons of history inside there. Makes it all real and maybe feel immediate.

I noticed they left out the pics of LBJ and some other dude in the background looking at each other and smiling while Jackie was beside herself.
She had to stand there knowing LBJ was the chief facilitator of everyone that was involved in the murder of JFK. Cui bono? Whose bonus? Who benefited the most from JFK's death?

SAM27000 was not in service until 1972.

A simple circular fuselage cross section would probably have
been better over the life cycle of those aircraft.
Ottonturk , No, I think it was more about "bids" from different aviation museums. The bids were about how the museum would display the aircraft, annual attendence projections, etcetera. We were given one of the Lockheed Jetstars that was in the SAM fleet for our museum here in Warner Robins GA. Even those were subject to competition for allocation. What also makes this plane very special ... This was the plane where they exchanged the coffins and performed the secret autopsy altering the head wound before it landed back in DC.
Notice how that early in its career it was fitted with a lower ventral fin which was later removed.
@@smwca123 ,
Thanks.
