  • Childhood actor turned award-winning director Ron Howard looks back on the first time he met John Wayne, as they were cast together for the 1976 film “The Shootist.” Howard heralds Wayne as a giant in the industry and in stature, and how an abnormal offer forged a quick bond with The Duke.

You're right, and that exchange is certainly the poignant center of the film. I was never a big John Wayne fan, but I liked seeing him in a role where the character was more vulnerable, a mix of self-confidence and tender emotions including the confrontation with his mortality.

What is funny is that sometimes when he is talking, the way he pronounces a word or phrase will make me think "There's Opie!" or "There's Richie!". With all the many miserable former child stars it is nice to have this shining example of well grounded normality.

Ron and his brother were raised by two very fine people for whom character was first - not being movie and tv stars. The documentary the brothers did to talk about their book told that story. Ron was wise to appreciate working with giants and legends in the film business and humbly learn from them. Loved hearing his great respect for the Duke. There will never be another like him. Ron is now a giant himself in the business. Thanks Ron.

I'd say its due to parents/guardians that are trying to live vicariously through their kids or just greedy. They push the kids WAY too hard and it takes it toll on their mental well-being. I think the kids then search for something to get away from it all. Sadly that ends up hanging out with rebel-types and getting involved in drugs or other bad stuff. Good parenting and placing strict limits on the amount of work versus school and being a kid is the key.

It was July 4th and they had the day off so he rented a big boat and had the cast and their families on board and watched the fireworks together. The late great David Huddleston told this story. He was hired to be in a John Wayne movie and on the first day of shooting while in costume and makeup lights on ready to go- the Duke sidles up to him and says something like "When I say Line X - give me a look, take pause move away - then say your line like you are scared". Now David was a proud New York Actor and he didn't take kindly to line readings from other Actors, so he said as respectfully as he could..."Mr Wayne but last time I looked your name was not on the Directors chair- I'll take direction from our Director". He said it looked like Wayne was gonna punch him, them slowly a smile - then a broader smile, and from that day forward Wayne respected him and they had a great time working together.

Duke was always into working with his own personal "in crowd". To be listed as someone he wanted to work with again must be a tremendous honor.

I’ve been residing in an assisted living facnkw for nearly six years now,I had an interesting conversation with my next door neighbor around Christmas time this year .
Before he moved in here ,he lived on a boat in Newport Harbor in Orange County California,i told him that every year I would do the boat tour there every Xmas ,and of course they would always mention The Duke’s house .
My friend told that his son and John Wayne’s son used to hang out ,abd that they had been to many of the movie locations where Wayne was filming,he described him as a down to earth kind man ,this just proved it ,the day Wayne died my mother called me in tears she loved his acting ,our whole family did .

I know it would never happen, I turn 60 Fri Mar 31, 2023 and I would love to see Richie, Fonzie, Ralph Mouth and Potsie together one more time. It would close out my teen to young adult years like the reunion of Han, Chewie and the Millennium Falcon and the soon ending of Indiana Jones... Everyone is getting older and soon it will be too late...

I was born in '70 and feel so fortunate that I was alive and got to enjoy a lot of the Golden age actors during my youth. Even though they were coming to the end of their careers, I look back and am so glad I got to see the legends.

Shirley temples was extraordinary. She could memorize enormous amounts of scripts, sing and dance at such a young age but she wasn’t able to extend her career beyond her teens like Ron was been able to do. However Mickey Rooney was able to sustain his career for 9 decades! So he is one of the great child actors too!

The Duke according to stories since my youth was always nice to fans wherever he went rarely had a bad thing to say about fellow actors. This is what people will remember you by when you're gone. Not how many millions you made or how many red carpet pics you were in!

Dear Ron Howard! While walking down Spring St., Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, John Wayne walked up to me an asked, "know best place in town too eat"? Well, I guess I'm! An how do you rate having zodiac for dingy on your ship? Well, come on our an I'll show them to you. 2 days later I motored by his yacht in my zodiac, JW put his arms on guard rail an said, "Pilgrim, where you been pilgrim, I thought I'd see you yesterday"? (So, he was thinking about me? Haha!) He takes me into aft state room, where Ben Johnson is looking at me, with his elbows on fancy wooden carved bar. Without thinking I have JW right next to me I say, "Ben Johnson, my dad thinks your the best horseman in all Hollywood"! JW put his arm across my shoulder an says, your dad is a smart man! Lifting his drink with other hand an toosting my father. Here! Here! whole room toasted my dad. Then Ben Johnson asked me, "who do you think was best Hollywood horseman of all time"? "You mean, other than you"? An the room just lite up with cheers! Well, I think Glenn Ford sat a saddle about as well as anyone! An state room lite up again with cheers! JW squeezed my shoulder an asked me if I'd like tour of the ship? I thought you'd never ask? Great day with JW an friends. Story continues!

It's amazing the life Ron Howard has lived, how America watched him grow up from 1960 (Andy Griffith) then American Graffiti, Happy Days and now into one of our greatest directors. For sixty plus years Ron Howard has been there in one way or another. So many things have come and gone but he has always been a part of cultural fabric
