  • There's nothing more nostalgic to me than early Spongebob Squarepants. I lived to see those early season episodes on Nickelodeon when I was a kid. But, we can all agree, there were some pretty terrifying episodes that aired. Let's take a look at a few of those episodes that freaked us all out when we were younger.

I wanted to clarify something real quick. Yes, I know Stephen Hillenburg created the show and episodes (I promise). This was a goof on my part that I wanted to clear up and apologize for! Appreciate you all watching and for the positivity!

That "Alone" sequence in SB-129 creeped me out so much as a kid. Not only was Squidward being in a white abyss scary to me, but the "Alone" texts and voices were even scarier. For some reason, they almost felt like a real person, talking to me through the TV. The specific text that was in the yellow speech bubble was particularly unsettling for me. It almost felt real, like I could touch it. I cannot at all find the right words to describe how this scene made me felt.

Rock Bottom is especially creepy if you ever had to get home on your own as a kid or gotten lost after dark, I imagine any kids who grew up in places like Chicago or south central LA could relate (At least ones I've talked to growing up) the monsters or odd creatures could act as a metaphor for strangers or creepy people you'd only run into at night. I know it's an odd comparison but it's what came to mind when this episode popped into my head again.

    • @wolfhoodlum1789
      @wolfhoodlum1789 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

It's very definitely a reference to getting off at the wrong stop in a strange rougher area of town and getting stuck because of transit schedules. I also think the moral of the story in it is that even if people seem to be creepy or dangerous, usually they're just people like everyone else and there are plenty of helpful people so you don't have to fear everyone.

I know this is an episode outside of the classic era, but Planet of the Jellyfish genuinely screwed me up as a kid. Something about the idea of the characters being mimicked by this alien creature (which is left to be a mystery) and having weird eyes and mannerisms really shook me. I always skipped the episode when it was on TV, especially since that episode was together with “Are You Happy Now?” which was equally as creepy honestly. I remember I used to have three Beanie Baby cat plushes, and I remember being terrified whenever they fell off the bed cause I was afraid the Jellion versions of the SpongeBob characters and Creepypasta characters would kidnap them lmao, funny looking back on that stuff now

Something that always freaked me out about SpongeBob, to this day even (I am NOT good with remotely dark stuff lol), is when characters ‘comedically’ go absolutely insane. The concept of insanity already spooks me, but seeing it happen in a light that’s meant to be comedic in a colorful animated show creeps me out sooo much. When I was a kid, I literally couldn’t even look at it or I’d be up all night. It’s not even just SpongeBob; any show that toys around with insanity as a joke creeped me the heck out.

The one SpongeBob episode that really creeped me out was “I had an accident” just the idea of a realistic gorilla in an animated world was just too creepy and how he just puts Patrick and sandy in a sack and beats them while tearing SpongeBob in half was way too traumatizing for 8 year old me. Like now I can watch it but back then I wouldn’t even watch a episode if it was halfway through it on tv and would wait till a new episode came on to make sure I wouldn’t see that specific scene playing

  • @Envoiden

I think there is a type of cartoon humour that The Simpsons tapped into with itchy and scratchy. I believe that after so long of writing this stuff, mainly referring to consistent "young teen" cartoons, it gets to a point where a sadistic side wants to experiment. A call to the void in a form of media where the line is nudged so lightly they you could miss it. A foot on the line of which a show steps beyond what it is known for.
Spongebob executes this well through the abstract absurdity of imagery that makes you wonder if it's comedic or unsettling, or if this really is a kid's show after all.

  • @dr.virus1295

It's not really creepy except maybe the crying but the time Spongebob and Patrick made the Giant Clam cry.
As a kid it was terrifying in a way that you can relate. You did something wrong. The kids know about what happened but you managed to get away before anyone found out it was you.
It's spreading rapidly around the school finding out who did it. So they keep you in class or a school meeting until somebody confesses before you confess it was you.
Teachers get mad, kids are mad that you kept them in class or even just laughing at you. More importantly they tell your parents.
That episode always reminded me of those situations.

The season 9 episode "Sanctuary" is interesting... There is one scene in it in particular that still sends chills up my spine, it's the scene where Patrick pretends to be a snail so SpongeBob will take him in, at first it seems kinda funny and the music is similarly lightheaded, however the moment SpongeBob opens the door in his crazy snail lady state the music tirns eerie, the fact the tone shifted so quickly from light-hearted to creepy is unsettling, what doesn't help id that SpongeBob looks off-putting, and the way he talks to Patrick who he thinks is a snail because of the disguise Patrick used is so unsettling, his tone is tired yet slightly deranged, when SpongeBob takes Patrick inside the house has snails everywhere, and the music swells going from creepy to genuinely scary, Patrick freaks out and tries to get out of the house, but SpongeBob pulls him back in and the door slams shut, in the next scene an animal control fish comes by to get all the snails at SpongeBob's house, once again the door opens and creepy music starts playing again, as the animal control fish tries talking to SpongeBob about all the snails in his house SpongeBob replies "No thank you, please" in the same creepy tired tone he spoke to Patrick in earlier, Patrick tries to escape again but SpongeBob catches him again and Patrick is actually screaming for help while still trying to pretend to be a snail, SpongeBob then slams the door shut.
Honestly SpongeBob in this episode in general freaks me out.
