What Canada do you live in?! My education (post-secondary, such as college or university) sure isn't free.
There's no "Free health care" and "free education". You're either indirectly paying for it by taxes, and most European countries that have those "Free benefits" have extreme taxes, but have a happier life. I don't know why though.

I never had to pay for anything in a library...and I live in Germany.
Piper XX I only visited two libraries in Germany, but they are completly free, too. The only thing was, that I have to sign a one-year free membership. With that, I got a card to get and bring back a book by myself.

Btw, normaly in germany you only payin for puplic WC like in Mall´s or Trainstation und often you get ther a coupon of the half till full price of it, what you can use in the shops.
In Resturant, even is there a singh at the plate that you should pay this or that, it´s still free to go to toilett, it´s a tip.
If it's a little plate it's a tip for the person who cleans the toilets throughout the day.
If you have to pay up front at like Sanifair restrooms (they kind of clean themselves) it's to pay for that technology.
Anyway you pay to use a clean restroom.
There's other free toilets when you're using the Autobahn for example and they're usually dirty af.
DestinyHopeLou That's actually interesting! Here in the US, public toilets are as clean as the area they are in. If you're in a shadier part of town, it's probably going to have dirtier toilets, as the people who use them are typically of lower standards. If you're in a really nice place, then the restrooms will typically be kept cleaner, as people with higher standards will be using them.

Trust me, it's not always free. Don't want to start a discussion or get into detail, but a miscommunication plus a letter, that never reached me, placed me in a situation where I had to pay over 20 months of insurance fees (close to 5k euro), because, according to law and insurance company, if you don't work, and you don't receive Hartz IV you got to have lots of money, so 140 euro a month is the baseline for health insurance, even if you have zero income. That's not free.
Yes it's free, if you are a student/azubi under 25 and are insured via your parents, unemployed, under 23 and are insured via your parents or, most of the time, if you are in the welfare system.
It's not free, if you are slightly to wealthy to receive Hartz IV, even if that wealth is way too little to live of it.
Now I don't complain about paying that amount, because it's one of the few laws without loopholes the rich can abuse, but in my case, it's not exactly fair.

Of course it isn't "free", but everyone will get proper healthcare, even if you can't afford it. And that's the whole point of "free" universal healthcare.

Disclaimer: Yes, I know it's still paid by taxes but that still keeps people from getting bankrupted by medical costs and it keeps the cost of medicine and medical procedures down because the government has an actual incentive to regulate the industry.
Sebastian Mustermann Health insurance is not paid by taxes. It is paid half by the employer, half by the employee. But in contrast to the US, it is mandatory, except if you earn enough to be privately insured.
Considering how much is taken from my gross salary, I hesitate to call it "free". It's just waaaaaaaay cheaper in case of an actual emergency. :)

Well studying also isn´t totally free, since you have to pay some beurocratic fees and the Semester Ticket so you pay a total of 300-500€ in total per semester and unlike a lot of US campuses you have to cover housing and your other expenses like food etc. which as far as I heard are included in the Semester fees of US universities

I'm from Austria and I have to say that you don't have to pay for using the toilet in many places here. Usually you have to pay at most places along the highway, but I never had to pay in any shopping mall or restaurant.
But yeah other than that everything is the same here too :)
Most NOT FREE things in Germany is also not free in South Africa. We pay for libraries aswell. Pay for bags. But we dont pay for shopping carts. We pay to use the bathrooms aswell since the local people walk away with the toiletpaper rolls. So now we have to pay at entry and they issue only a few blocks of toiletpaper to you.
Not just Europe, either. Most of the world.
I've never paid for going to the bathroom in Denmark and neither in Denmark nor in England have I paid for library services. So these things definitely can't just be generalized to all of Europe

I think the Pfandsystem is one of the greatest things. And I don't understand why the US and other countries don't adapt it. There's so much benefits to it. I f.e. save all my empty bottles and then when I bring them all back I have enough money again for all of my shopping :) Also it's better for the environment, the plastic bottles are not thrown away in nature! And it's at least somewhat a way for homeless people to get a little extra money together by collecting the Pfandflaschen that a left in the city.
The only downside of it is when you want to buy a drink and only have 1-2€ left and cant afford the bottle because of "Pfand" :/

Do not kill me but I think the amount should be much higher. Back in school, I remember other people dumped bottles behind bushes and they said "25 cents is a joke. I will not wear them all the time for 25 cent.". My suggestion: Raise it to 2€.
I find 25cents appropiate. Of course, if it was more expensive you'd be more likely to return it, but sometimes you're just in situations where it would be a hassle to carry it with you, but you wouldn't want to throw it away either. With 25cents it's not too painful but it's still a pretty good incentive in most cases.
Most people will also not throw it into a bush if they don't return it, only teenagers and assholes.
You do not have to pay for restrooms in Germany, when there are people sitting out front. They sit there, because they do not earn a lot of money, it's just kinda like a tip.

I dont know a single place where i had to pay for using the bathroom and i live in germany, in the northern part. Maybe its still a thing in the southern area, but not in the northern part. If it is it is pretty rare here.
The only place i know they could exist here, would be at the (dont know if its the right word) pul- in stations at the autobahn.

Du kennst nicht einen Ort, wo du bezahlen musst? Musstest du vielleicht schon mal auf Autobahnraststätten aufs Klo? Da kommst du so gut wie nie umsonst rein. Viele Restaurants/bars/Cafés lassen dich auch nur gegen Bezahlung dein Geschäft verrichten (wenn du dort nicht isst/trinkst). Und hier in Berlin durfte ich schon oft genug zahlen. Genauso in Stuttgart, Köln, Hamburg, Dresden, etc...

It kind of makes sense to pay for refills in Germany. Usually restaurants couldn't survive with only the money they make from meals. The profit margin on food is too low and if they higher the prices, no one will eat there.
Also, as you noticed, you can stay there really long, which means that you probably will drink a lot more than you will in a restaurant in the US.
Anna Konda Yeah, that's right. You make most of the money with drinks. With food, you have to calculate the fresh ingredients, the chef, energy for cooking, etc. With drinks most of what you need is one bottle and a cooler or a freezer. And from one liter of coke you can make 3 to 4 glasses a 3 to 4 Euro. Huge win margin.
Also to be super impolite to the US: Most of the refill fountains in the us just use tab water to mix the instant coke syrup. And if your tapwater is disgusting (like the one in Michigan/chicago tastes like chlorine) i wouldn't even want to pay for it anyway.

That's also the reason tab water is not free, it would cut away the only profit they make.
Anna Konda If you wouldn't have to pay extra for a refill, you might drink too much what could make you fatter.
They actually use seltzer water(i.e. carbonated water) to mix with the syrup. The syrup is highly concentrated, so mixing with seltzer is actually more economical. That's why fountain drinks are far cheaper than bottled or canned sodas, hence, why refills don't screw with profits.

Pyrrha Nikos where are you living? The health care isn't free you pay it with every salary you get and you have to pay for most of the medicine with your own money. Just a few years ago we also have to pay 10 euros fee for the healthcare everytime you visit the doctor. This isn't free at all.

There is no free healthcare at all :D you are just legally obligated to have an insurance, I guess it is cheaper than in the U.S. because everyone has to have one and so they have the possibility to lower the taxes, but its not for free (: I think its about 15% of your monthly income, for my mother thats about 130€ per month, and as sandra said, you have to pay at least a part of every medicine you need, not the whole bill but for "normal" medicine like antibiotics its about 5-10€ each.
Askaria: Wait till you are old enough to get a job before you start talking like you know something. You do NOT pay 15% of your monthly income, this is what is paid by you and your employer together. And the employer pays the greater part of it.
And yes, some medicine you have to cover yourself, but what you mention is the fee for the prescription, not the medics. But do you have the slightest idea what it would cost you, when you go to your doctor with a cold if you had to pay it by yourself? No? I thought so.

Must be something that varies by place. Where I live in Germany (Frankfurt) you've got to pay a yearly fee to use the public library. It costs 20 euros per year to use the library, kids are free until 18.

earn * but for real, taxes are less than 20% and we have freedom unlike so many other countries that have an extremely expensive cost of living and extremely high taxes. ..but everything is free. Maybe you should start telling the reasons, like the toilets, they have to be cleaned by People who often do not own much, and the Little amount of mony shall prevent non-customers from always using your toilets. Normally, then there´s a sign "customers free"

True. There may be exceptions but most of them don't get the money, which can be a lot, but minimum wage or worse. In fact sometimes they aren't even cleaning. They just have to sit there, maybe even wearing a cleaner's uniform, and look at you so you leave money. Which is then taken by the manager in regular intervals, while the cleaning is done by actual cleaners in the evening.
In German Restaurants you don't have to pay as much "Trinkgeld" as in the US😌

+sylverscale Yes, I also tip when I'm in a hairdresser's shop. A friend of mine works as a hairdresser, and even though we have the minimum wage of 8,50€ in Germany, the tips are still helping her a lot.
Aldi (which is a German based company) in the US has the chain system for carts, and I love it.
People are too lazy to put away their carts otherwise... I'm not sure HOW 25 cents motivates them, yet it does.

Trader Joe's is a subsidiary of Aldi Nord (Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd are two different companies). Do they have this system? Its been a while since I was in USA.
Watching these videos I am surprised how much alike my country (NL) is to Germany. But for example the US trend of "all you can eat" often has a time limit attached to it.
And as always, TANSTAAFL. Healthcare is paid for indirectly via tax (more so by the rich than the poor). Free refills of soda are paid for as well. I just like to drink water with a meal, or maybe a glass of wine. I find drinks ridiculously expensive either way.

I'am a german and it's often a trouble to get a free tap water in a resturant. Lots of germans are angry about this. But mosty it's common to get a tap water free, when you order a espresso.
And yes, germans don't like smal-talk. We only speaking with unfamiliar about the weather or a trip. (how long was it and so on)
When you ask for more (family, kids, weekend), they think you are curious, inquisitive or strange ;)
Hi Magon. Is there any reason why tap water is not free? Is the tap water save to drink? I am from South Africa. Some cities here dont advice drinking tap water since it will make you sick. Some cities charge for water since water supply is a problem. Different reasons. Just wondering why tap water in Germany is not free.

It's like leaving a tip. The money is for the people cleaning the toilet. If everybody leave 1$, they can have a decent salary. Another solution would be to raise the prices to cover theses costs but this way even people that don't use the toilet have to pay for it. So is it really too much to ask from you ?

Actually I have seen many places in Germany where you can get free refills all the time. Basically whenever you have a self-service tap you can refill as often as you want. Especially IKEA even advertises this. Some fast food restaurants offer refills for free if go to the counter and ask them.
Those "free if you return" things obviously exist for a good reason. In order to reduce waste, they offer you a nice cup which you pay for and then get the money back. This way they can reuse the glass/cup and have no waste, where as in America I can already imagine all the trash piling up after festivals where people throw away plastic cups.

Yes. I heard the story that big immigrant families bought one drink and like 20 people drank from it using free refill. That's why it's not offered anymore in most places.
I saw free refill in KFC. It was an expensive place somewhere outside, where they didn't had those problem.

Tobias Feldmann-Wüstefeld. Only free if you are unemployed. If you work you pay. And your boss pays too. Just not as much in the states. However because everyone goes to the doctor for every little hiccup and cough to get a week off work, going to the doctor is an all day event and you wait a month for an appointment. Then they do pretty much nothing but send you here and there and everywhere else they have a friend that wants to milk the Krankenkasse. Socialized medicine is a load of bullshit. And, if you don't die waiting, the paperwork will finish you off. And since it doesn't pay to be a doctor here, a lot of them go to Sweden or Norway or the US, and Germany itself has to waive visa eligibility and import them from India, Pakistan, and eastern Europe. Not that some of them aren't good doctors, but so far I have dealt with two quacks that I cannot believe have a medical degree. Oh! And I almost forgot. They can screw up all they want and you have no recourse. There is no malpractice law here. They have to kill you to get in trouble.
Afraid you only get free health insurance if you get Herz VI or your parents pay for you while you study (until you hit 25). Not German but work here and compared to other counties that just use income tax to provide healthcare this does not seem very free.

I have not criticised the German system in the tread so far as I can determine and I do not want to attack it as I work as a guest/foreigner here. It seems to work quite well although I have never used it and you have managed to incorporate a positive private element into your system very well. However I maintain that you do not have "free healthcare" in Germany paid out of general taxation without the requirement to join and pay about 10% of your salary (on top of your income tax) to a Krankenkase (see Iceland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, etc for a contrasting system). I only state this fact as a lot of foreigners (particularly students/freelancers) who come from another healthcare system do not take this into account when budgeting a move to Germany and find themselves in trouble when asked to pay a substantial sum of money unexpectedly.
In Canada its illegal to charge someone or deny to use a restroom. Eden on private property you cant say no.

health care isn't really free. It's more like, you pay 15% (the exact amount is dependent on which medical insurance company you choose) of your monthly salary. If you're under 18, you're parents need to pay for their kids health insurance too.

I'm from germany and only had to pay for toilets on festivals that have otherwise free entry and on the highway where everything is overpriced in general. I never got a token for a glass, never payed over 1€ and never thought its a good idea to not have to bring a shopping cart back to where it was. I guess having empty cups everywhere and shopping carts be stolen or left somewhere around is not the way how things should go.

Don't know where you live/go out, but in three months I had to do all of these things she said. I don't think I ever saw free toilet while I was there (not even in shopping centers) and on some crappy small festival I was giving 2€ for pfand and also likr 3 times I got token.

In CA plastic bags cost money now too, in Germany restaurants are legaly obligated to give you free tap water, usually you do not have to pay for restrooms in Germany and a lot of libraries are free as well... Maybe Munich is an exception but I know that there are a lot of free ones from personal experience.
There is also a law in Germany that all places where you can get drinks and food have to have a free restroom. The only exception in this law are for the highway restaurants.
Also umsonst waren bei mir bisher nur die Unibibliotheken. Für Stadtbüchereien (4!) habe ich jährlich blechen müssen, wobei der Preis aufs Angebot angepasst war. Als Erwachsener 20€ (bzw. 10€ für Studenten) und bis auf Internetnutzung an den PCs war alles inklusive. In der Stadtbibliothek Oldenburg kostet die jährliche Ausweisverlängerung 2,5€, zahlt aber für Nicht-Buch-Medien knapp 'nen Euro; für Bücher, die Bestseller sind, sogar 2€! Für 1€ pro Medium wird auch reserviert. Büchereinutzer sind in der heutigen Zeit Kunden, können dafür aber auch aktiv mitgestalten (Veranstaltungen, Anschaffungswünsche, etc.). Aber das hat halt seinen Preis.
Ich habe auch schon einmal bei Subways - zugegeben Großstadt/ Touristenhochburg - 50 Cent zahlen müssen, um auf die Toilette zu gehen; habe dann aber auch einen 50 Cent Gutscheinbon erhalten, den ich im Laden einlösen konnte. Selbes Prinzip - wahrscheinlich Dein "üblicherweise" - auf Autobahnraststätten mit Tankstellenklo.

AbituriErpel Bei uns in der Gegend sind fast alle Bibliotheken kostenlos und das mit dem Leitungswasser hab ich vor einigen Jahren bei Galileo gesehen.
Kurze Google-Suche und es kommt raus dass Leitungswasser nicht kostenlos ist, netter Service wenn ja, keine Pflicht.
Büchereien in meiner Umgebung erheben auch einen Jahresbeitrag, außer für Schüler, kommt halt auf die Bücherei drauf an.
Und natürlich muss man nicht im Restaurant zahlen um auf die Toilette zu gehen, aber oft genug sitzt da eine Reinigungskraft und es wird erwartet ihr ein Trinkgeld da zu lassen und ich gehe nicht raus ohne eines zu hinterlassen, wie der größte Prozentsatz der Deutschen denke ich. Ich denke das ist eher darauf bezogen und auf Einkaufscentren, wo die Toiletten ja normal auch kosten.

shopping carts have the coins to avoid shopping carts being "parked" anywhere on the car park. People tended to not return them to their designated areas. And some people take the shopping cart home as a way to transport their groceries, but then not return it.
Shops actually lost quite a few shopping carts throughout the years.

In Germany official rest areas are run by the state, so they are also payed by taxes. There are usually just restrooms and some benches. However rest stops including a gas station and a restaurant are run by private companies. You need to pay to use a restrooms, but you get what you pay for. "Free" restrooms at rest areas are often dirty and disgusting.
The restrooms in stations and on the motor ways aren't free, mostly because the right to operate them has been sold to some private investors in Luxembourg and the UK, and they just want to make money, and literally don't give a sh*t about anything else...
only the restrooms at parking sites at the autobahn are free (or paid by taxes) - and you can smell that. the restrooms at gas stations and restaurants aren't really free. or to be more exact: often when you pay for the restroom you get a coupon, which you then can use in the restaurant or gas station to pay other stuff.
So that's why they do the coin thing with the carts at Aldi's since It's a German company

I live in Germany too and I just wanted to mention that it is not allowed by law to sell tab water without being absolutely sure / it has to be proven every day that there are no risky chemicals etc. in there. So usually no restaurant will get into the risk and just sell bottled water.

ILove Privacy yes, the law prohibits it. The restaurants have to do daily testings on their cost and they have to make sure that there won’t be anything harmful on the way to the customer. As this is very hard to do in reality, almost no restaurant will serve tab water in any way.
It is not that there has to be a money exchange to get tab water. It is more a thing of hygiene and that you have to prove that the water is ok, what is very hard on a daily basis and you won’t get any money for your work.

Shopping bags aren't free everywhere in the US. Where I live, they introduced fees for bags to encourage people to bring their own. I am unsure whether I like this or not. The environmental argument doesn't really work for me because I always used the free grocery bags as garbage bags, whereas now I have to buy garbage bags.
The fact that people have to pay for a cart in Germany or use a token prevents what I see all the time in the US: People being too lazy to return their cart and leaving the cart somewhere on the parking lot, or even taking it home with them and just leaving it blocks away from where they live.
I remember the litter from plastic bags prior to the tax in Ireland, and the difference afterwards, amazing. Same in UK. It's no doubt saving the lives of some animals.

a lot of restaurants on the cheaper end calculate in a way that they don't earn much on your food order. Most make their money on drinks, so they have a strong interest in selling you a drink. In restaurants that are a little more expensive you should be able to get water without problems.
Over here, residential rate for tap water is $3.5 for 100 cubic feet, which turns into about $0.00036 for a 12oz glass. Commercial rates are about $2.5 per 100 cubic feet. The water in the glass is effectively free. 3,700 glasses of water would cost about $1 in water.
I don't know any libraries where you have to pay in Germany. At the libraries I know you only have to pay if you give the book back too late. Then it is a very high price to pay.

The library in my hometown wants 10 € to get a library card, but after you have it, the rest is free (same for all). In Munich, it's free for everyone (don't know about the library card though, maybe that isn't free)
My local library is pretty nice when it comes to bringing back books late. If you call them and let them know you will be late, they usually check if someone has that book on their "wanted" list, and unless there is no note in the system, they will gladly extend your borrowing time. They also will cancel your yearly subscription fees when you donate material to them (books, magazines, DVDs, games). They are pretty nice overall. ^_^

restaurants in germany are not allowed to give out tap water to customers, not even for free, since the quality in bigger cities, for example, is not secured. they are only allowed to sell bottled water and these usually cost the same as a soft drink
They are not allowed to serve the free Tap water, but its not because the water isnt safe or the quality is bad, even in big cities. We have a "Trinkwasserverordnung" that make sure the tap water is safe to drink everywhere.

erstmal ist es ein fernstudium und ich arbeite vollzeit. die 5000€ sind das studium an sich. klar ist dann in der präsenzphase (osnabrück, komme aus hamburg) fahrtweg und übernachtungskosten, die werden aber auch von der steuer abgesetzt. ich kann nicht sagen, das ich wirklich effektiv was bezahle (kaufst nen drucker, den du eh wolltest, oder laptop, kann man ja alles absetzen)

Also, the tapwater thing. Basically, Tap Water is considered gross. Alone the german word "Leitungswasser", which means "plumb water" or "pipe water" does not really sound appetizing. I grew up with tap water being solely used for washing and stuff like this.

I can only speak for Vienna, but here everone is drinking tapwater, because the vienna tapwater tastes at least as good as most sodas. At the coffe-houses you even get a glass of water for free, if you want it or not.
Well the american tap water is much grosser... they put chloride in it to disinfect it, so it tastes like swimming pool water.

A single toilet flush uses more water than you drink in a day and that's including non-water beverages. You drink 1,0 - 1,5 gallons and toilets typically use 1,6 - 3 gallons per flush. The same with showers, you shower in tap water and the average shower of around 8 mins uses ~17 gallons of water.

Reason you have the coin system is so people don't just leave the carts around the parking lots. So that people put them back where they were taken from.
if you get a lot of alcohol, they are usually pleased to give you water for free because you get drunk more slowly that way so you won't cause a scene there.
Also, they're not monsters. Drinking water when drinking alcohol reduced the chance of a hangover
in Australia here it is a requirement at pubs and clubs that free water is provided. so here off to the side of a bar, there will be a few glasses with a jug of water so you can help yourself. all restaunts, pubs or clubs will provide it for free if you ask for it
I live in the US. Some stores do charge for bags but what I think is better is if you go to an organic or natural foods store and bring your own bag, you get money off your purchase at 5 cents or 10 cents per bag. There are also discount stores that charge for shopping carts as well as bags.
The reason refills are free in the US is that government subsidizes their production. Sodas have high fructose corn syrup or corn syrup and the corn industry is highly subsidized so much so if you order take out they will give you a free 2 liter bottle of soda. I make my husband take it to work because we don't drink that stuff. It is also a win for the restaurant because the high fructose drinks create the need to eat more which in turn gets you to spend more.

Theralún im from austria, and you cant say its generally free. they can take money for that, but it need to be in their menu; but you'll get a closed bottle with name and brand on it, not just dropped out the pipe. if u order cafe (the real cafe, not that beansoaked boiled something americans call cafe) u get a small glass tabwater for free. this one is out of the pipe - but even better and cleaner as bottled ones in us.

reason ist a different one: restaurants get their soft drinks in bottles which are more expensive, fast food restaurants have their own soda machines who make the soft drinks out of soda and a syrup, which is waaaaaay cheaper than the bottles.
The refill is actually not free (well usually). They just don't watch at you all time. many of those stations have also signs that read, refilling is not allowed)

In Sweden we pay 10 or 20 cents extra when we buy soda bottles, however if we bring the bottles back to a recyclingstation we get those 10 or 20 cents back. It's a great way to encourage recycling!

It's not usual to order that in a restaurant, perhaps it's regarded as "not classy", i dont know. To be honest, to me ordering a "tap water" in restaurant sounds like "and can i have some hay for my horse, too, please".

I have never experiences that, I've been in the UK 4 times I think and everytime I ask for a glass of tab water they will bring me and expensive bottle of water.

The restrooms in Germany are normally free... depends on the store/restaurant. They do it because they say Cleaners get not enough money and it's just fair for that kind of job. In in my opinion they are right.
AND of course you can get free water in Germany... It's also your right to get free Tap water (in stands in our law!). The restaurants said no because they are stupid and want to make money^^ but you have to remember them that it is your right to get free tap water ;)
I don't know the law, but there is definitely a growing number of restaurants that charge for tap water in Germany.
Toilets are usually free in restaurants (except on Autobahn restaurants, where you pay 70 cents and get a voucher, but only for 50 cents), but public toilets are often not free and also toilets in malls are not always free.
Also in the US in clubs there are people at the restrooms to get some money from people.
They aren't allowed to charge for TAP water. That's why they don't want to give it to you. But that depends mostly on the restaurant.
The water you get is bottled water but without gas. So they have to pay for it themselves and that's why you neither get free refills nor tap water.

Then think if you pick up a piece of litter may times you will end up being able to get an extra 10 quid within 5 minutes! You get free money and help the environment! 🤣🤣

Thats not right. If you pick up a bottle that has a bottle deposit and you return it to a store or gas station, they will give you 9 to 25 cents in exchange for the bottle. You won't get anything if you pick up litter.

Simply Madison dont know anything for casual litter but almost every bottle or cans have "Pfand" , so the have a code wich you can bring to the next supermarket and they give you money for it. i think he was talking about bottels not litter.

Like he said, it is called "Pfand", which you get back. Like if you buy a bottle of [insert drink here], you pay an "extra" of 9 to 25 cents, depending on what it is. RedBull Cans for example are 25 cent. You get it back, if you return the Can, which is part of the "Recycling circle".
Here is the thing, a lot people do not care about those "few" cents and so we have "poor" people mostly, which are called "Pfandsammler", who collect the cans, bottles and whatnot and bring them back to the Store.
In the Case of a Soccer-Game, certain people make a couple hundred € at that event. There were a few reports about that, how they came up with strategies to get the most of them. And people know that most of them are poor and leave them there on purpose.

Never ever got served tap water in a restaurant in germany. They always say you can only buy a little bottle of soda.
You need to order it with the right attitude. You don't 'ask for' tap water or 'wait for' tap water. You say: 'I'll order this and that and I'll take a glass Leitungswasser (tap water) with that.'. I've never in my life been denied tap water. You just have to order it as if it goes without saying that you can get a free glass of Leitungswasser with your order. Even the shittiest 3€-for-a-pizza place will serve you a free glass of tap water if you order it with the right attitude. In the end you are the customer that chose to give that specific restaurant your money and if you give them the feeling that you could at any point just get up and leave if you don't feel like a valued customer they will think twice about not spending that one cent to serve you a glass of tap water.
In America now there are companies Aldi and Lidl which might have German roots, which do the cart and bag things described here.

That wouldn't make much sense. If you would steal the cart, the coin would follow with it. Then, you could have all the time you need to get the coin out of there, and you would also have the cart. The coin slot in shopping carts is just to make sure you don't abandon the cart just about anywhere once you don't need it anymore.
powersilly in my whole life I've never seen a worker that brings carts back to cart station in Germany. Except of IKEA. And I do remember the times where you don't have to put a coin into the carts. The problem was really that the ppl took the cart with them home and never brought it back. the problem still exists. That's why some supermarkets have a kind of immobilizer at the cats wheels. You can't leave the area of the supermarket with the cart.

I work at an Australian supermarket as a cleaner and trolley collector. We have the coin deposit mechanism for trolleys at my store but my job is still necessary because there are spots to return the trolley all over the car park; I just collect trolleys from those locations and return them to outside the front door.

It's pretty much same in Finland. Many larger stores have several spots to return the carts, but the carts need to be moved to the one spot where people will take a cart on their way in. Just often it's security guard's job. Maybe it could be seen in the way that people are so honest that security guard isn't needed 100 % of the time.
A funny thing is, during the couple of past years, in many stores the coin deposit mechanism have been disabled. Use of cash in Finland has been said to be in decline, and maybe the mechanism at some point was found to bother customers more than to help the store? The mechanisms were in common use for about five years before that.

Aldi in America is a tiny, tiny, tiny company compared to Walmart in America. It doesn't compare at all. I don't shop at either there's much better grocery stores.
Fun fact: Aldi in Germany is actually basically two companies, Aldi Nord (North) and Aldi Süd (South). US Aldi is Aldi Süd, whereas Aldi Nord is basically Trader Joe's in the US.

From what I understand restaurants are making a big amount of their money on drinks in Germany and wouldn't even be profitable without this practice. Mostly because they have to pay more to the waiters (which in turn are less dependent on tips).

Food is very cheap in Germany, that's right. And we're still throwing away too much; the trend is to buy less of better quality - unfortunately the poor mass is growing because of the economical globalization, killing jobs and making work cheap.

Here in Sweden you have to pay almost everywhere, and it's always between 5 -10 kr ($0,55 - $1,10, or 0,5 - 1 euro) per person. That adds up quickly when your out all day... I often avoid drinking to save money, and end up with a head ache instead.
The only free toilets are in restaurants, cafes, clubs and bars (but you have to buy something to be allowed to use the toilet), and in extremely rare occasions you can find a free toilet in a mall out in a suburb somewhere, but never in the city where it's needed the most.
So... I've become an expert on finding well hidden bushes and hidden alleys where nobody will see you if you have to... *hrm* ...do your business for free.
But the libraries are free here, except if you want to make copies, but it's usually only 1 kr (0.1 $ or €), and we have free education and free healthcare. :) Yippee!
Also our tap water is famous for being exceptionelly good and it's completely free as well. :)
i needed to pee real bad after a night out and we still had a 2hr drive ahead of us... i asked in the casino they said NOOPE and the only toilet i could find was at the train station, they wanted 1euro. 1 euro!!!! i just peed in the park instead.
Libraries are normally 2€ in germany, if you are a student or unemployed. The rest of the people are expected to be able to pay 40€ a year.
We also have called Leergut or Pfand what basicly means that the plastic bottles cost 25 Cent more which you only get back by giving the plastic bottles back...
I’m a lot older than you, but born and raised in the good old USA. Back in the 70’s and 80’s, I remember some stores having a locked device on the bathroom stalls. You had to put a dime in it to unlock the bathroom and be able to use it.
Also, back in the day, it was customary for the waitress to come to your table with a pitcher of water, and pour everyone a glass of water, while you were looking over the menu. Even at breakfast they your first serve you a glass of water. 😊
Well, paying for restrooms isn't THAT common here in Germany. 90% of the time it's free tbh. In Turkey, though (I live in Germany but am Turkish and we travel to Turkey every summer break), it's very often so that you have to pay. Not always, though.
Well, I had this discussion on a different (but similar) video already and from my life experience in NRW I'd say if a toilet isn't part of a restaurant or shop ("real" for example) and meant for customers than about 80 percent of the toilets cost 50 cents. The ones you aren't paying for usually are uninhabitable wastelands (yes that is hybperbolic).

Paying for the washroom though? Fuck that. Go to a mall, the train station, or McDonalds. Burger King has the coin operated doors, but people who are leaving will hold it open for you. I've never had to wait more than a minute or so (guess I'm lucky) I donno if it works, but when I leave if there's no one waiting, I stick a paper towel in to hopefully keep the lock from working.

In most places in the U.S (at least around where I live) most restraunts and some smaller places, for example starbucks, are required to give out water for free. This is very nice because if it's really hot out and you're walking downtown and just need a drink, but don't want to pay you can walk to the nearest coffee shop or ice cream place (if they have drinks) and ask for a cup of water and you can get it for free
