T1 Trust PRR 5550 open house | Building America's next mainline steam locomotive

  • I learned of the T1 Trust's ambitious project to construct a NEW Pennsylvania Railroad T1 class steam locomotive just a few weeks ago, and as luck would have it they displayed it at their open house in Harrisburg, PA this weekend. Without hesitation I made the trip to check out #5550 and to meet some of the folks working to make this dream a reality.
    Construction on this 4-4-4-4 duplex drive streamliner started in 2014 and is expected to be completed in 2030. As of January 2022, the project is 39.1% completed. When finished it will travel to short line railroads to give railfans the chance to watch and ride on excursions, and it will attempt to break the world record for top speed by a steam locomotive.
    I start this video with a brief walkaround of #5550, then Jason Johnson from the T1 Trust gives a great talk to the crowd about the locomotive and patiently answers all of our questions. Thank you Jason!
    Please consider supporting this worthy project at:

    They both Race toward Chicago like in the old days

      A better match for the T1 would be the NYC S1 Niagara. As for Hudsons, I much prefer the unstreamlined classic J1.

    The 3 railroads that are willing to support and have 5550 on their rails are (confirmed by the T1 Trust on their website):
    1. Steam Railroading Institute, Owosso, Michigan (Great Lakes Central Railroad, the same companies and rail lines that operate Pere Marquette 1225)
    2. Steamtown National Historic Site, Scranton, Pennsylvania (They are restoring Steam Locomotive 4-6-2 pacific Boston and Maine 3713, and the rails they operate on are Lackawanna and Wyoming Valley Railroad, ex-Delaware, Lackawanna and Western trackage, ex-Delaware and Hudson trackage, a line to Delaware Water Gap, and a small part of the Reading and Northern)
    3. Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, Independence, Ohio (A common Railroad Nickle Plate Steam Locomotive Number 765 operates on.)
    Other railroads I would like to see her on and are realistic are the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern, Strasburg, Nashville and Eastern, and U.S Sugar.

    • @JamieMakin
      @JamieMakin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those all sound like great choices! I happen to be going up to Steamtown tomorrow, but I believe the only steam locomotive that will be operating will be Baldwin #26. I'm really hoping #5550 will go to Reading & Northern / Lehigh Gorge and Strasburg since those are local to me. I'll travel to go see it in other places too though when the time comes.

    • @regularguy7266
      @regularguy7266 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamieMakin yes, Baldwin 26 is the only steam locomotive operating at Steamtown currently. They don't have an estimation date for when 3713 will be finished. As for me, I live in the Midwest, and we don't have as much as you guys in the East or the West, but we have and are going to get some amazing stuff (Milwaukee Road 261 is underrated, Pere Marquette 1225 is awesome, Union Pacific 3985 will be a long yet powerful restoration, and a lot of other cool stuff.) I would like to travel to the East, especially for Reading and Northern someday. Either way, everyone's excited for everything!

    • @JamieMakin
      @JamieMakin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just got back from an awesome day at Steamtown! That included riding behind #26 and railfanning her. I got a quick look at 3713 in the shop, and sadly I think they have a long, long way to go to get her back on the rails. Glad you at least have a few restoration projects in the works in your area. Reading and Northern is a top-notch railroad, and I have even more respect for them after I visited their headquarters a few days ago. Hope you get out here someday to ride their trains!

    If they made her run on the line from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, they could make a ton of bank on excursions. Obviously have the coahes decked out with modern amenities. But have the line as flat and straight as possible to achieve the speed that can be used as one of the selling points.

I was filming a train going thru Hummmelstown back in February it has a Conrail caboose on the end. It started slowing up so I followed it. When I got up to another crossing. I find it really cool that the Frame won't be a cast unit, but a precision welded forged steel plate frame. Cast frames had a bad habit of getting some warp in them from heating and cooling. Because of that they had to run tolerances looser for anything was attached to the frame. Looser tolerances caused accelerated wear. With today's precision optical measuring tools that new steel frame should remain straighter than strait and stronger as well.

    Jason, WOW!! you're a hard guy to find, (but congratulations on your latest endeavor). Two questions here...First, will she be articulated, (i.e "Mallet"- style?). I think I just answered my own question, but chime in if you'd like. Secondly, back in the day when you were with Jerry, Tim, et.al; on the OCR and rebuilding 6325...we had some sort of on line, (AOL on my end) conversations ABOUT that re-build and you had VERY generously offered pics of these events. Unfortunately, the laptop I had at the time seemed to have a voracious appetite for "leaded" Budweiser and fried in front of me...thus losing everything I had. Question being, (and I know this IS a stretch), but do you still have these files in some obscure corner of your machine? I'd normally contact you about this if I had a place to go in privacy, but until then...Your thoughts? It'd be great to "speak" with you again.

      Hi Jim, I'm not Jason but you can get a hold of him through the T1 Trust (www.t1trust.com). I was just out there getting my first look at the locomotive, but I did get to talk to Jason some. Very nice guy, super knowledgeable and passionate about this project. He did say it won't be articulated, but it has about 2" of lateral movement in the wheels due to the shorter driving rods. I hope you can get in touch with him though, let me know if there's a way I can help with that.

Per your earlier offering of being able to help...I'll take you up ON that offer, but I'm not sure how to go about that though I do have a saved copy of that letter of which I'd like for you to read and go from there. I remember an engineer telling me about one pulling a freight train over a mile long in the 1950's through Terre Haute in the 1940's. He was a fireman. He told us that he could deal with the infamous wheel slippage by "feathering" the throttle instead of pulling them out and "locking" them in a notch.

    Who can manufacture a new steam locomotive boiler today? I know some tourist railroads did boiler replacements on their steam locomotives because the old ones were too worn out. Where the heck is this thing going to run? NS isn’t as steam friendly as they were during the 21st Century Steam program started by former CEO Wick Moorman. Now Wick is involved with the EBT resurrection and the 1361 rebuild. I know a good spot for 1361 to run again. York, PA on the Steam to History line and Ma and Pa toward Hanover like it did in August, 1988. I was on one ride to Menges Mills and return, then we headed to Ocean City, MD for the first time and I saw the Wilmington and Western saddle tank steam locomotive and tender that doesn’t run anymore and might have been sold at the Rt. 41 crossing in Hockessin, DE in August 1988 on our way to Ocean City, MD.

    • @JamieMakin
      @JamieMakin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      5550's boiler is being built by Continental Fabricators in St. Louis. It sounds like they're going to do all of the fabrication of the locomotive and the rebuild of the tender out there too. They haven't decided on a home base yet, but they said they plan to run on short line railroads mostly in the eastern part of the country. For now the Class 1's are not part of their plan, but they said that could change over time if NS/CSX/etc. management changes. That would be cool to see them run out in the York area. I'd of course wish for Reading & Northern, though I wonder if a few of their turns are a little too tight, and I don't know the weight limit on the Hometown High Bridge. Strasburg would be cool too even if the run is a bit short.
