    Don't know what you guys are on about, it's a cracking, super tense scene. Carey plays a woman disconnected from herself trying to make an independent move. The language is subtle, the acting spot on... I'm totally feeling it.

      Totally agree - very intense, subtle, absolutely fantastic acting and editing.

      Yeah, people will ignore all the subtlety just to hate on women.
      Carey is amazing is this. That flinch at 4:00 is incredible.

    Excellent film! This scene was class and well acted, solid directorial debut from Paul Dano.

    I think what people miss about this movie is how disconnected BOTH parents are. Jake's character drops his job and leaves his family alone on a whim - it's not a sacrifice he does to provide for them, it's something purely selfish and for him, and him only, so lost he was in his career;
    Carey's character, on the other hand, has to deal with being left behind by him, but screws over with her boss in this attempt to get a "second wind" on her life. She cheats on her husband out of desperation, but doesn't seem to take into account her son's feelings - actually, she does feel bad to an extent, but never does anything to make up for it, or jumps out of the affair. As her husband, she acts out of selfishness, albeit in a totally different way;
    So it surprises me that people are so merciless on Carey's character, while giving a pass to Jake's. This reminds me a lot of Blue Valentine - a breakup story where people tend to side with one of the characters, and generally shut their eyes to all their flaws in the story as well. But you only need to take a step back, and you can see how both effed up, in different ways.

      True. I can understand why they did what they did but it was still selfish and irresponsible. When we have a family, we'll have to sacrifice certain things. We'll have to place some of our wishes and ego aside, atleast that's what I believe. The only person I can truly sympathise with is the kid. Other than that both parents are guilty of not fulfilling their respective roles, regardless of the magnitude of their wrongs. I think she gets the hate because _cheating_ has morally more emotions attached to it than say, him neglecting his duties because of his ego. This reminds me of the movie "Brothers" with Tobey and Jake, there's a similar pattern of judgement in the comments. People just can't be bothered with treating the story with more nuance.

    Holy fuck, this resonated with me a ton. The last girl i broke up with gave me a similar response. She said she wanted to work on herself and I stupidly believed so we decided to break up but it wasn't even 3 weeks later that she started dating a new guy. MAN how stupid I was.

      @@laffairiste8296 Her husband split on her, she pretty much begged him not to leave. They had no way to pay the bills without him. Especially in those days when men worked, and women stayed home and cooked and cleaned. Husband pretty much went off on his “calling” but abandoned the family. So she feels betrayed, so by the time he gets back from fighting the fire, she loses her feelings for him , and no longer looks at him as a man who can provide for her and protect her.
