Do some herbs! Rosemary! And basil in a strawberry gin like beefeater is amazing. Also, sorry, but cucumber is amazing with certain gins and so are carrots. The vegetable restriction I do not get. Great video as always. Love from California.

Impaleification it is all preference. The true beauty of gin is it provides a base for all sorts of garnishes for each palette. Some just work better with others. Grab your fav and have a drink with me... as long as its gin.

Rosemary (love it with the Gunpowder Irish Gin), thyme, ginger, rose petals, red bell pepper, pepper corns, and star of anise are other garnishes I have had with my G&Ts. I do love grapefruit and really enjoy it especially with Pickering’s Gin.

It's been so long, maybe you should do a follow up with another selection of maybe more leftfield garnishes. What I'm seeing recommended a lot lately is garnishes in pairs that supposedly play well off of each other, depending on the gin of course. Apple and juniper berries, lime and ginger, rosemary and black peppercorns, strawberry and basil, basil and green chili, green chili and lemon, lemon and thyme, lemon and lavender. You're bound to have opinions on some of those!

If a gin is heavily juniper forward I will go with lemon because lime seems to make the drink a little too bitter. I definitely will consider using an orange garnish during my next gin excursion here in Middle America. Cheers!

I often omit the garnish entirely so I can enjoy the Gin on its own. As you alluded to, a lot of work has gone into blending the gin to give it its specific flavor. The choice of botanicals is like a sort of alchemy.

It's funny how the Brits assume the lemon. As I'm sure you know, in the States if you order a g and t, and say nothing else, there's a 95% chance you will get a lime, a 4.9% percent chance you will get nothing, and 0.1% chance of lemon....with an apology for being out of limes.

Can you do a similar video on botanicals used as garnishes like juniper and herbs like rosemary, mint basil etc... Are they worth using, do they cover up or ruin the original taste of the gin or do they open it up? I personally love to add some fresh rosemary tom my g&t whenever i use Mediterranean tonic i really love the aroma. I haven't yet tried other herbs and i need to try adding botanicals other than just juniper, but they are kind of expensive on amazon...
    Love your videos!

@@nononsensegindrinking5152 Great can't wait, you could also do a comparison between drinking a gin with the regular Indian tonic as you always do, and trying it with a recommended tonic by fever tree, I noticed that you can find recommended pairings of gin and tonic on the fever tree web site, for example, they recommend drinking Tanqueray and beefeater with the aromatic (pink) tonic, i haven't tried it yet but it would be interesting to see how a different tonic affects the tasting experience

What really differ my taste from his taste, is that I love red grapefruit in the gin & tonic. He likes the Beefeater, but it is infused by grapefruit peel. We are all different tho. And I really love the Hendric's gin with cucumber.

  • @paulwhitman8955
    @paulwhitman8955 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hello, nice video as usual! I personnaly like all the garnish you mentionned, probably 70% is lemon though, it's rarely a miss. I can imagine cucumber is not for everyone, within the 5 garnish, it is the one flavor we are not used to have in candies, cakes, sodas etc. We had the others countless times in various forms during our life, it would be very rare that one would not develop a taste for it. Even considering that lemon, lime or grapefruit are not necessarily the first taste you would go for as a baby, cause it's a bit sour, bitter or both.
So when combined with a drink, I believe, the unsual taste of cucumber will divid people into 2 groups, the ones that like it for it's unsual combination, and the ones that hate it for the same reason. Whereas for lemon, the vaste majority of people would fit into the group that likes it, or the group that loves it.
Sorry for my english, non-native speaker hear.

Depends on different gins... i like to pair with garnish and even a dash of bitters! A lighter floral and piney gin like Roku i pair with a dash of mint bitters and mint leaves from the garden... Citrus forward gins like a Tanq or sipsmith will do well with an orange wheel (i like mine dried and a bit burnt for a marmalade scent) and orange bitters. Give bitters a try with gin tonics, its a whole new world :)

I agree with you to a point. And the point is this: if the distiller has taken much time and care to make the perfect gin (and they do) why fret about a squeeze of lime, when you pour an ocean of tonic on the distiller's artistry? Makes no sense to me! To me, nothing beats Beefeater, whether in a G&T, or a Martini.

I'd love to see a video on a Spanish gin, called Gin Mare that uses olives, rosemary, thyme, and basil as botanicals. I haven't tried it but would love to see you put it up on your channel with garnishes of thyme rosemary or basil.... Sound odd I know but it is a very popular gin.

Well... botanically, cucumber is a fruit. I am with you in that I'm not a huge fan of it. I can see the appeal, as it does provide a distinct freshness. Orange is delicious. My only problem with it is that it's too sweet and low on acid. I do prefer grapefruit, but then again, I love grapefruit. I'll eat that stuff pretty much as you would an orange, haha. Lemon is good and I feel it provides a better aroma than lime. So my order would be: grapefruit, lemon, orange, lime, cucumber. Cheers!

The garnish is dependent on the botanicals in the gin....lemon slice in Plymouth or Bombay, orange slice in Beefeater, and cucumber in Hendrick’s. I find lime slices to be VILE. A garnish should NEVER add a flavor that isn’t already in the gin.

Having found your channel and gone on a gin journey since, I was a 100% lime person. But now I drink more juniper forward and more expensive gins (Edinburgh gin my current favourite) , I can honestly say lemon is my go to garnish and a big lump of it unsqueezed. I think lime works best with the citrus and floral gins and Lidl Hampstead would always get a big chunk on lime. Grapefruit can be in reserve for really cheep lifeless gins. You may like this site, even though I don't agree with the ones I have tried www.theginguide.com/gin-garnish-guide.html.
