Just so you know, Simon, you can’t go to China as a tourist again now. And you can’t even safely travel on any flight that has a layover in Hong Kong. People who have posted things mildly critical of the CCP have been arrested and disappeared when their flight to somewhere else made a stop in Hong Kong. I’m glad that you’re covering this, and I have a lot of respect for you bringing attention to this, but for your own safety, please be careful traveling.

I have some dear friends who were missionaries to China. They went with their kids and even adopted two while there. About five years ago they suddenly came back to the states. I figured this was why they came back so quick after a vacation back here for clothes etc…. So glad they are home and safe now. When we corresponded with them there could be no “religion” in the messages and couldn’t post on social media directly about them. Another friend went with her husband on a business trip about 10 years ago, even then they were watched and their hotel rooms bugged. I wouldn’t go there for any amount of money. Stay safe Simon.

"Another friend went with her husband on a business trip about 10 years ago, even then they were watched and their hotel rooms bugged." What business were they in? I've been working as a foreigner in China for years now, and it is definitely not standard for hotel rooms to be bugged or for visitors to be tailed or whatever. To be honest, as much as I hate the CCP, I think you are lying, you were lied to, or you just have some whacko friends. Probably the latter as China attracts a lot of schizoid paranoids for some reason - at least in my experience interacting with the expat community.

The problem with controlling a person's religion is that involves controlling their mind. Evil individuals or groups of people want to control your mind so they can get away with their crap. Even if there is no God, if you force people to think that the government is God, that's always a sign of bad things.

My grandma was born in a small village (Enns) near Mauthausen in 1935. Everybody there knew what was going on in the KZ (concentration camp) but if you spoke bad about it, you would become an inmate (political criminal) pretty quickly.

There were for sure longstanding tensions between the Uighurs and Han when I went there, including a major ethnic riot in 2009, and I noticed security measures in excess of what I saw elsewhere in China, but I certainly wouldn't have expected it to end up like this.

Yes even for DV cases, abduction, and arranged child marriage. Yes people have been killed by their DV absuers while waiting for their divorces. And to get married, you only need your national ID, and the non-existent level of checks are encouraging abduction-marriage. Every marriage now becomes a prison cell for a woman.

I also mentioned when it came up in conversation that what I've heard about what Assad has done the people of Syria sickened me to my stomach, and my Iranian friend responded by saying he had heard those same things about Assad before, didn't believe them either, but if they were true he'd also despise the guy.
