I also have the same model with the same problem. After seeing your video, I thought that it may be the connections of the legs of the chips do not have good weld at some points. I used a heat gun with a very small nozzle to reflow the welded joints of the legs. After that, I got sound right after turning on. It seems it is working properly now. I will post again if it fails later.

Hey Dan. I came up with the idea to add a heatsink after baking the DSP chip as well and you already tried it. But I have to say you did it wrong. I realized that right after you got the chip removed: the actual silicon soldered to the PCB which acts like a heatsink. So the extra heatsink actually should be attached to the bottom of the chip (yes, right to the PCB on the other side of the main board). I have HTR-7065 with the same looking main board and the same issue and I'm going to try it my way: 1. bake the DSP with a heat gun from the bottom of the chip. 2. attach small heatsink(aka memory heatsink, I have different sizes, so I'll try to use the biggest that can fit) to the PCB under the chip with thermal glue. At the same time I'm not sure when I'll do it, so can't commit to any specific date. But I'll post my results here sometime later. Thanks!

@@yourdiytechlife I did it! Will see how long it is going to last. In order to use it as much as possible I attached it to my computer workstation via HDMI and I'll use it as my primary sound source everyday for at least 8 hours. Also I switched it to "7ch stereo" mode in order to make sure the DSP is in use all the time ("cinemaDSP" logo is on the receiver's screen). 11/19/21 is the start date.

Thanks for posting this vid. Have watched thru several times as I have the same unit and apparent problem. I'll leave some comments to help others as this seems like a good repository of info because of others interest here with similar problem. Also have to say I have zero electronics experience and just making educated guesses here.
I'd guess your board baking info was from another source. They must have had a digital readout to get the 390 deg. My old oven only indicates 25 deg. increments. 390 seems awfully precise, why not 400? and then rather than 15 minutes why not for 12.5 minutes? (LOL - just trying to be funny) Would vibrations while the board was cooling really cause problems? I remember when I was a kid my mother would take some swats at me if I ran thru the kitchen while she was baking as the vibrations might cause whatever it was to collapse. Maybe shaking the board a bit might cause the solder to flow into some of the voids if there were any (another possible funny - ha ha ha).
OK so the board was baked and later the chip torched which both seemed to help temporarily. But then it was thought the chip needed to be kept cooler so a heat sink was attached. Things seem to be going in opposite directions. From my own experience with my unit is that the chip (or something else) does seem to need to get warmed up a bit and then it works fine but volume does go on and off until unit does get up to temp.
Have also found out that playing a few seconds of DVD brings on the sound but is starting to take longer and longer to happen. Originally had intermittent sound problem watching ABC OTA TV channel and found TV antenna cable had come lose at connection to surge protector. So make sure cable connections are all tight. Don't know why it was only ABC that had problems though.
The little pops you hear may be your speaker cones smacking away as the voltage come on. Not a good thing for your speakers. I found using the Pure Direct sound option helps to eliminate the popping but has issues of it's own but not as damaging as the popping.
Well I guess that's long enough. Thought there were some other things to add but my old brain has moved along to other things and I'm drawing a blank. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the video! I've been searching for a solution for few days and think you've finally solved my problem, which means my Yamaha HTR-3066 receiver is probably dying by hardware due to that chip issue too. Everything on my receiver works good except my 'Cinema DSP' light will not lock 'on', as it will flash or blink for a while and then eventually warm-up to work. This started out as a few minutes a few weeks ago but keeps getting longer in time. It will work as long as I don't power it off, otherwise the 'Cinema DSP' waiting game begins again once it's powered-on. I think I'm going to just buy a new Sony this time as my older Sony 5.1 system still works good and I thought it actually had better sound quality for music anyway, but am planning to do a little research first.

    • @yourdiytechlife
      @yourdiytechlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Well that's a bummer,. HTRs are not the only devices out there that suffer the bad chips I have found. I have an iMac that has a similar issue with the video adapter however with that device I have been able to bake the chip and it's worked for up to a year and a half, so a very different experience there.
I opted for a receiver with Dolby Atmos but honestly I don't ever use it.
Happy hunting for a new one.

Why didn`t Yamaha use for example like a cpu socket on this DSP chips. Much more easy to replace them. And the contact would be much more stable! Got myself a Yamaha RX-A3040 receiver. Two identical DSP chips on that one. The known error is that the sound cuts out for a few seconds and the display of the speakers disappears from the screen of the receiver.
This only happens when running digital sound. Netflix etc. If you run analog sound, the problem disappears. I first sprayed the entirely digitalboard with Wd-40 spray. And used a toothbrush to clean the entirely digitalboard and chips. Then used a cloth on the chips. Then a hairdryer for 2 minutes on the DSP chips. Let it cool down for 10 minutes. Then I put Honeywell PTM7950 Super Highly Thermally Conductive Pad on the chips. Problem solved. No more sound cuts.

My issue started after attaching an old Google Chrome device to my LG OLED which was attached to my RX-V673 via ARC. Replaced the receiver today with a new DENON (since the Yamaha is now 13 years old) and everything worked fine. Then the sound cut out again and speakers started to squeal and pop only when Google Chrome was being used. Not sure what happened. I decided against repairing it for a few reasons. 1- at the time the cheapest I could find the chip was $50. 2- From what I could tell this problem was wide spread with all of these chips manufactured so the problem would most likely com back 3- I dont have the proper tools to properly remove and replace the chip so there was a high probability that I would not have a successful repair. 4- the chip does not support Dolby Atmos and that is something I decided to setup in my theater. for those reasons I decided to purchase a new receiver, however I am in the process of bypasing all the digital audio processing and converting it to an amplifier only. I will use it in some other rooms of the house for a whole house audio system.

You are going to regret that decision in very short order. I got suckered into making a switch from Yamaha to an Onkyo and it was a HUGE mistake. Onkyo makes total garbage. Never again. I'm a Yamaha guy for life now.

@@NunYa953 to be honest I am about to drop the entire receiver based home theater. High end sound bars are good enough and I want to start focusing on a real 2 channel setup. It's probably the last receiver I will ever have.

I think you'll regret that decision too but totally understand why you'd want to try it. They are super simple to setup and use, the sound quality has improved exponentially as well. But in my experience, there is no replacement for a true home theater receiver. And when you get a quality one, the setup is a moot point because you only have to do it once. I've actually never purchased a brand new Yamaha receiver. Only used and I've never had a problem that wasn't a simple fix.

@@NunYa953 hears the thing, I used to like watching movies in my theater but I just don't do that anymore. I find watching on my Mac with a great set of headphones FAR more entertaining than a theater. I found a great little program called boom that does a decent job of three dimensional space replication based on dolby. The other thing is that I prefer Netflix shows over most movies so that works well with a PC. The intire home theatre thing has really played out for me so it's on to other things.

Board "baking" is not a fix for anything. It's not gonna work. Never. This DSP chip will fail again.
I have RX-V673 with Taxas Instruments D80YK113CPTP400 failure. I heated DSP chip with hair dryer and DSP started to functioning then little squirt cold spray and sound is gone.

Agreed, with this chip it does not seem to be affective, the best I got was a month or so out of it after baking. After heating it several times I would only get a day or two. With that said it did give me time to do some good research on what I wanted to replace it with so I found value in that. By and large baking a chip is a temporary fix but there is value in it as long as the people doing it know this. For example I have baked the GPU in my imac and it holds up solid for 3 to 4 months at a time. It's an easy process after the first time you do it so it works for me as a diy type person.

Onkyo, pioneer, denon and Yamaha having same issues with Texas Instruments chips

The problem is not yamaha company, It is the chip supplier "Texas Instruments".
They messed up a lot of products who used their chips (Onkyo, pioneer).
Avoid receivers with TI dsp. Buy Marantz amplifier, they use SHARC Processors from Analog Devices. That one is bullet proof.
