  • In this episode, I wanted to take some time to share my background and give you a glimpse into my professional journey. From starting out in the IT help desk in my hometown to making the leap to the DFW area, where my career truly took off, I have faced challenges, disappointments, and triumphs along the way.
I'll be sharing some eye-opening experiences I had during my time in the help desk, including being passed over for a role in cybersecurity due to internal politics and the realization that loyalty to oneself is essential in the corporate world.
But the story doesn't end there. I'll also be diving into my transition to the Network Operations Center (NOC) and the valuable lessons I learned during my time there. Plus, I'll discuss the importance of knowing when it's time to make a change and pursue new opportunities.
So sit back, relax, and join me on this enlightening episode as I discuss why I made the decision to leave the help desk and share insightful advice for those considering a career move in the IT industry.
But before we begin, don't forget to hit that like button if you're watching on TH-cam and subscribe to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred podcast platform. I finally put my 2 weeks in after 18 months. I was burnt out of help desk. I had even applied to their SOC and was passed up as well due to political reasons as well. Ever since I left doors have been opening up for me for cyber security. I have an interview today for a SOC analyst role! 9 times out if 10 Help Desk or Support roles is a stepping stone for advancing your career in I.T. The other 1% are people that likes enjoys that kind of work and stays where they are at. I.T is mostly self promotional driven as you are in charge of your own career. You don't sit around and wait on promotions because those rarely happen often. You skill up and do stuff outside your support role and dip to apply for a different role in the next tier level up.

@@TechTualChatter I'm in Desktop Support right now but I also do Sysadmin stuff too in collaboration with a the server team as the only Red Hat guy that deals with all the RHEL Workstations. My role is a bit niche and very rare since RHEL mostly handle by the server guys not common in Desktop Support roles. I worked on some Unix Solaris machine's too. I'm already headed down the Sysadmin path since I'm already halfway between the two roles anyway as a Sr. Desktop Support Tech and Linux Admin. My goal is to get into Cloud Engineering later on since a lot people come from Sysadmin backgrounds in those roles. I can utilize my Linux background with AWS.

I worked in a NOC type environment. It was very difficult to adjust to doing nothing and learning nothing. It was too many job filler requirements (get packages, deliver them to people) and still monitor. 12 hours sitting there with barely anything going on. On top of a toxic supervisor. It did drained me! No life outside of working. Now I’m in help desk and I feel like I may be here too long as well as in college for cybersecurity. So I definitely will not be doing this for longer than 2 years. The ones in the NOC are pretty much going to retire soon so it’s a good job for them. For me who was eager to learn and grow, it wasn’t good. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I worked for GDIT and the vibe was very weird. They talk so much about diversity but you only see it in low level help desk roles. There isn’t one black person in a leadership role. I already knew they weren’t going to allow me to escape help desk because they can’t keep people as it is. The supervisors would hate if they knew you were trying to do better. I thought it was just my team but I’ve heard the same from people on other teams.

Internal moves are bad! Learn that if you move from a position you are really good at! Guess what! They aint going to move you! They will actually keep you there cause its hard to find that replacement and train. Why it is important to alway move externally. One the pay is 50% higher and second you get what you want!
