I hadn’t realised I was talking to the iPad saying “Dime the Blossom Point! Come on Ryan, dime it!” until my Mrs assured me that I should speak louder or you wouldn’t hear me. 😂
I have one of the old DIY Surfybears, and I have a red jazzmaster with matching headstock and blocks, and I have a bulky attenuator I use to get that exact Blossom Point sound, so I have no reason to be so covetous of your upgraded versions of my gear, but I am. You have the perfect rig right there. You're done. You can close the channel down. You win. Every piece of gear you test from now on is just a meaningless side quest. 🤙
Glad to hear that you're getting the band together again, man! Please update us on The Blossom Point and Surfy Pan in the band mix if you get a chance.
Once my new Jazzmaster (that Ryan caused me to buy) arrives I will now have to buy a Surfybear (also because of Ryan) Those two together sound great. Thanks Ryan, I’m going broke!
I'm living my Surf music fantasy vicariously through Ryan. All that I have is my Strat and the reverb knob on my Super Champ cranked up and sometimes add my cheap reverb pedal. It's not enough, but that's why I never miss a surf/drip type video on 60CH.
With headphones (or actually plugged in and playing) the difference is huge to me. I have a Surfy Bear Classic with the Surfy Pan and it's a huge improvement over the original tank. I also have the Blossom Point at the end of my chain and it's always on. I just adjust the input level depending on how hot the pickups are to push it as far as I can without full breakup. It's a game changer unless you're playing a brown panel Showman.
Way back in the ‘60’s, I was trying to form a good band and auditions first question was “ do you have your own amp and how loud is it?”. My little amp had 3 valves and a small spring tank. Above 5 volume it started to saturate and sounded wonderful. The spring reverb was on the max. One spring broke at the end and as a result it got shorter than the other one. Amazing sound, you should experiment with different spring tension.
Sounds like a great forum topic. Might even get lucky asking Accutronics who their spring supplier is, and then (maybe) find a different-tension spring but still in the same length and diameter?
Man I stumbled into coast sonic for the first time and saw several surfy bear products. I wasn’t there for that, but I’ve always wanted an external spring reverb. I managed to escape that day without going from stupid to totally insane.
I’m buying one! It fixed the issue I’ve alayws had with my surfybear metal. The trails were over the top and made the tank to “blary” to my ears, to the point that I hated the sound of my tank so much that I’ve completely shelved it, and stopped using it. This may be a game changer for me, as it sounds more natural, as it was always intended to be. And yeah, the Blossom Point is amazing! I’ve had one on my board for over a year and it’s my secret sauce! Thank you very much for the video, Ryan!
IMO the compact is the best choice, the two presets and limiter/decay control is the key to it not being overly long if you dont want it, I had the metal and just didnt like it for general playing
I regret i didn't buy the "Big" Surfybear. I purchased the Compact, it's fitting better on my board but the sound isn't up to the real thing. Thank god i own a Surfybear from the early DIY aera wich works still great.
I think it would be interesting to try swapping out an amp's onboard spring pan for the Surfy pan. Then you could do a comparison of the differences (or not) of the amp's circuit versus the pedal's circuit with the pan as the constant.
@@60CycleHumcastIs there any inexpensive drippy reverb pedals you recommend checking out? I recently used the light pedal to make a horror theme for a horror comedy short film I’m working on but I can’t get it to sound good enough for surf and the thing was expensive but I don’t want get rid of it.
@@isaacvasquez4401 the cheapest drip I like comes from the ehx oceans 11. It’s digital and has a bright shrill thing going on but it gets you there. Unfortunately there’s not many great options for affordable surf reverb. There’s either springs involved or lots of heavy dsp to get that sound.
@@60CycleHumcast Aw man, I just bought a Julianna pedal too. I’ve heard of the Ocean’s 11 ordered the 12 a while back and canceled the order for the light pedal. If that’s the cheapest I’ll have to wait a bit. Thank you for letting me know.
I can definitely hear the difference between the new springs and the old but not enough to update an older Surfybear. BUT the Blossom is a real game changer - very distinctive and variable plus it adds a noticeable amount of lower resonance and tone! I'm not real crazy about its maxed out gritty tones, but you can always turn that off. The Blossom Point with either SurfyBear is a GREAT SOUND for surf, etc!!!!!!!!!!!
im lovin the "drippy" sufyness the surfybear gives ya...even with the stock tank! none of my rig has that drip....looks like i have a surfybear in my future haha!!!
I put Surfy Pan in my super reverb and it had a very very long tail and cause a lot of feed back. I personally loved the longer tail but found it odd to have the reverse affect in an amp. After a ton of trail and error (rotating the pan, insulating pan etc) I narrowed the feedback down to the connection type on the pans. The surfy pans are “plug in” style where the rca connection plugs into the springs. These are more prone to picking up feedback. I ended up replacing the pan with a new fender pan made by ruby tubes. It’s connections are directly soldered and does not have any feed back what so ever. Also the reverb is great. Obviously the pans work well in the pedals but in case anyone else tried them in an amp like I did, that’s the fix.
Comparing surfy bear to surfy bear is one thing but i wonder how much better that surfy pan would sound in my custom pro reverb or any other modern fender amp?
You might be the wrong person to be asking this question but I have an early 80's Peavey Bandit 65 with an accutronics spring tank in the back that I believe also uses RCA cables....could I possibly use that in my Surfybear Metal?? I believe the spring tanks are the same size.....
New pan lacks some character to my ears and the original sounds "boingy" splash tone. Personally, Danelectro Spring King would do the job, plus you are encouraged to kick it😜
To me on my iPad ( i know, not the most optimal audio quality..) , it sounds like that “ Blossom point” pedal takes away a bit of the clarity of the high notes, and that reduces the sound quality .
Yeah, Surfy pan is slightly darker and less chaotic on those chord blasts. The original pan bloomed into chaos before dying out. On the single note stuff it didn't seem to matter as much.
I love the sound but the comparative felt almost pointless... I mean, both pieces of gear sound just as great and it also seems to me that the best part comes off as soon as you do a lot of set ups so you can find that sweet spot...
i think both pans sounds great but also different. personally i prefer the surfy pan because theres less of a ringing sound at the end of the trail while providing a nice loud drip. The original does sound great though.
To me, the new pan sounds like it has less high end and a slightly more present upper midrange. the original pan sounds like it has a slightly more scooped midrange, to my ear
i can´t use the reverb on my super reverb amp because the springs are triggered by the kick drum of my drummer in some stages , i like spring noises but not on every kick beat, here´s a question i have: this real spring reverbs on ta board can suffer from the same issue than my amp?

To each his own but I like the sound of the original pan.
the original sounds more like my 65 Fender tank.jmho

theres going to be more of that, im relearning all the songs right now so we can gig again.

That Blossom Point definitely de-muddies the sound nicely, love it!
Could you do a demo of swaping the princeton's reverb tank with the surfy pan? I'm curious if it would be worth it to upgrade my princeton's tank

The SB pedals are not trying to mimic the onboard amp reverb, they are going for the Fender Reverb unit
Valid point. I still think it would be an interesting comparison.
The new pan definitely sounds better. Wish I knew about this pedal before I bought my reverb pedal, I love my light pedal but it doesn’t drip.
the light pedal is a unique beast, nothing else does what it does, but yeah its not a surf machine unless you are doing something pretty different.

I hear more treble on the original pan. The Surfypan seems fuller. It's a great pan.
You might want to try the Benidub Spring Amp II with this pan ( or any other ones).
