@Isle0fRed It doesn't really matter if you go by the audio level meters. It's generally accepted to shoot for -12db, which gives you a little overhead protection from clipping. I max out the record level at 100 when using my cheap Radio Shack lav mic.
Thank you. You have been very generous in giving all of us your time and the benefit of your experience. Alan
The XLR box is an interface that allows the connection of XLR mics to an 1/8" input, such as on a camcorder or recorder like the H1. I like to use a mic going into the Zoom, either a lav or shotgun mic. I never use the on-board mics except to record ambient tracks. The H1 is fine by itself if you run a shotgun mic into it and just cover the person that is speaking on camera.
@DarkbladeMediaTV I don't think the H1 works as a boom mic as you can't monitor levels when the recorder is perched at the end of a boom pole. However, I do agree that it needs a shock mount. Stay tuned to this channel or the blog for that one.
@Knoptop Hey Dave! That's a Raynox 6600 wide angle lens followed by the rubber lens hood that you turned me on to.
Re: the utility of a wall plug power supply... I haven't used the h1 but using the h4 recently with unpowered lav mics, having to supply power to the mics from the h4, I found it chewed through a whole battery every 5 minutes!! Odd, but I learned from that and bought an external supply.
I love your stuff!!
@ranger7theseries I like the eyeglass case idea! The faceplate case is perfect as it has that piece of foam built in that keeps the h1 from moving around. That and it's free.
Yes, I use the H1 all the time for post-production voice overs. I don't know of a better audio tool for the price, though the Tascam DR-05 is a sturdier (and larger) unit for the same money. Sound quality is about the same.
hi that handle you can hold it but it's really made for a mic stand holder. the holder on a mic stand you would put a mic in. that's what it's for
Just did and listened to all of them. I think it is awesome that you take time to reply to comments!
I have the H4N and although it is a more expensive it takes both XLR and 1/8. I've had it for almost a year and I am very happy with it
@maabellera It's the Sign Video XLR-PRO and I bought it online (about $150). If you don't mind owning used, you can get a real deal on these off of eBay for $20-50.
I actually bought that same tripod at a local Dollar Tree store for, as you said, $1. Definitely need to be frugal with this purchase. As you mentioned, no need to get the kit they sell. There's DEFINITELY cheaper ways to accessorize!
That fuzzy thing made a bigger difference that I thought, but I'd like to know how the voice sounds with the fuzzy thing on.
That transforming pistol grip (5:28) reminds me of the original Megatron Transformer! :) Good video, thanks!
@dhatje Thank you for the great compliment!
that's cool. I actually keep my H1 in an old hard shell eye glass case. it works great!
Rickvanman actually has an online video that teaches you how to make those mic yourself. That is how this company got started. The dollar store has tripods for a buck. They work great. But nice builds. The vista gun mount looks useful though.
The hand grip is perfect for using a mic stand. I use mine with a boom stand to position my H2 over the subject just out of frame.
@gnarwhal1 I think I'm going to have to, so many people are requesting one. Probably this summer.
@usedtobeawkward Foam won't cut it. DSLR Film Noob sells a great one for $10 or you can make one similar to my mic shockmount. Just remember to allow access to the record button!
@thecreativegeek It's called the Sima Quickonnect. You can find them on Amazon.
Thanks. Wish I’d seen this before I ordered the accessory kit!
Best tips for microfilmmaker! Thank you.
Hey by the way I really like your videos. Glad there is someone out there that understands us low budget filmmakers. :) So anyway what shotgun mic do you suggest? I would be plugging it into the Zoom H1.
@GizmoBitz It's the XLR-PRO from Sign Video.
@lemmonsinmyeyes That is correct!
And thank you so much for your great videos, I have used a little something from every single one of them...
Just came across ur vdo n i must say ur doing an awesome job!! Thank you soo much for the info! Now Im planning to get H1 soon... what shot gun condenser mic do u suggest? I want to get something thts affordable... And also can u plss give a guide on how to make a boom pole for the mic? Plssss reply soon! :)
@thefrugalfilmmaker thanks for showinng me the zoom h1 it was @ target on clearance!
7:00 the photo of your camera caught my attention, I see the UV filter, but what else do you have packed ont he business end of that camera?
Great video, thanks for all the ideas. You always amaze me with the little gadgets you make, the power of imagination at work, you do it well, thanks !
This was real helpful. what about shock mounts? Any info on that? Where to get or how to make one?
Love your stuff, but I'd like to correct one little error. The "pistol grip" accessory from Zoom is actually not a grip, but is designed to adapt the recorder to be used with a standard Microphone Clip and Microphone stand. You can also use this to attach the unit to a cheap shockmount, available at most music stores. Keep up the great work!
Cool tips. I just got the zoom h1 and I did not spring for the 25 buck kit (because I'm frugal don't ya know)
Great tips thank you. I just got mine and I am surprised how sensitive it is. I am looking at kids' furry toys as a possible windscreen source. A panda's ear might be the very thing for the job! Or maybe the whole panda but it wouldn't do my street cred any good (who said "What street cred?"}. I don't suppose you cover installing and using the free Wavelab
LE software? I just have a blank screen I can't even drag an mp3 onto from my downloads to practise. Great video anyhow! Subscribed!
Hi,as i have some experience with it,its great..the down side is the battery, even when turned offit seems to run down..well as i like to take it to the forest, recording birds, its dissapointing to to see it losing power..otherwise its a beauty,
I'm really liking that little handle tripod, good find!
Also, I just got a zoom H1 and am pretty disappointed with the recordings i'm getting, compared to the zoom h2n i've used in the past which i feels like get's a much more fuller sound, any tips for the h1 either in the field or in post?
Don't record with your input level below 20, or the H1 applies it's own attenuation. Don't use the internal Lo Cut, and stick to recording in WAV. If you record vocals directly into the H1 keep input levels between 20 and 40, then normalize in post.
Thoughts on a DIY parabolic? Thanks, and keep up the good stuff!
@FrostyTheBeerMan Thanks, I am kind of a DIY gadget geek.
thank you for the great help for my zoom h1, i subscribed you. Jan from Austria
Pistol grip looks cool! BUT, you can use the mini tripod from Dollar Tree and get the same effect. Wish there was a way to put a shock mount on the mini tripod for the zoom h1 though. Any ideas?
Thanks for your videos.
Basic question: I'll be filming outdoors and on-site audio is not important. Can I use the H1, later, back at my computer and over-dub my comments onto the video track? Is there a better audio tool for same or less money?
Thanks,
Alan
how is the audio for this so good. when you hit stuff on the table i check to make sure I'm still wearing headphones
Could you do a video on the best way to make a shock mount for the zoom H1 to avoid those noises when you make contact with the recorder? I think you'd probably do the best one in TH-cam.
It's Sign Video's XLR-PRO.
I was going to get the zoom h1, but I found a $20 off coupon code and bought the Tascam DR-07 MKII for a total of $130. It has adjustable spread microphones and seems to be a great option for only a little more money.
I have a video with audio from on my channel.
I would love to know the pros and cons between these products.
I have found my way back to you like 15 times... imma subscribe. :D
@felelo1 I use a Sennheiser ME66.
How about a way to use the H1 as a boom mic? I've got a setup that involves a windscreen, as well as a 6 foot mono-pod for the pole, but I've had the hardest time trying to figure out how to make a shock mount to go along with it.
Will it actually last all day on one battery? I'll be using it to record a 3 hour show it'd be great to know it won't die halfway through.
Awesome Tips!!!! What XLR Pro at 1:10 do you use? I couldn't find it online.
Very nice and informative video. Thank you.
What's your budget?
Awesome thanks for taking the time, great tips.
Great video! Thanks!
Have you tried putting a rubber ring around the pistol mount's screw to dampen handling noise? I wonder how that would work...
If you have the Zoom H1...what is the purpose of having a xlr box? And is their separate mics to use with the zoom h1 or do you just use the recorder by itself? If you were filming a movie using the h1...should the actors be wearing all separate mics or will the h1 be enough ?
@SlicedFilms Just added it into the description.
Hey! Greetings from Puerto Rico. I found this video very cool and interesting. New sub here!!!
I think you should add the zoom hs1 to this list, it's a hot shoe mount for the h1
really good video
Hi nice video what's the name of that quick connect tripod mount thing please
I would like to see a audio test for when you used the zoom H1 with the boom mic.
Hello, I have a question. I have Zoom H1 with all official accessories. My intention is to make amateur recordings of choir performances at public venues. I don't know how to solve problem - on what tripod/stand/anything stick this ZoomH1 with all possible accessories and put it in front of choir to catch best possible sound... What would be your suggestions?
The adapter should work fine.
Very good tips, indeed
Can you make a comparative test with regulag windscreen and furry head windscreen? I'm verry curios if is realy needed a deadcat. Thanks.
great review!
Google "shotgun mic shootout" and click on the link from DVeStore for a great comparison of shotgun mics (complete with audio samples) at all price points.
thanks a bunch you saved me money
Very informative. Thanks for the tips.
I seem to be the only person on the web considering to use this for recording classical guitar,.. not a good sign?
Great tips, thanks so much!
What camera do you use to shoot himself at the beginning and end of the video?
I'm thinking about buying the H1 and a lav mic to use as a wireless microphone setup. Do you know of any cheap yet good sounding lav mics? (By cheap I mean sub $200).
really great video.
Thanks this was very helpful :)
If may I ask, what camera and light system did you use in this video?
Straight forward good thank you sir.
@gnarwhal1 a motorized one would be awesome!!
GREAT VIDEO...!!!
Yes! i love your videos!
great great video !!!!! saluti dall'Italia ;)
Really useful video...
DSLR Film Noob (.com) sells a "Noob Shock Mount" for $10 that will address this issue.
hey, i cant find that black xlr box
can u send me a link for one on ebay
ive searched and cant find one
oh, and on your jib i changed something. instead of training wheels, i used pulleys with nylon rope and it worked great!
Perfect timing I just go one.
y do u have an XLR box connected to the H1, i have the XLR box too, but i use it for other pro mics for my camera. iv work so much time on the professionals camcorders from sony like the HVR-Z7U, so i really didnt worry much about other stuff, but now that i graduated from school, i got my own camera, anyway i just wanted to know because im still new to the separate thing on like that cuz i got an NEX-VG10,
I have a an sony audio digital recorder, but not an zoom H1. I noticed you attached a quick release plate to the zoom H1, but my recorder doesn't have a thread or anything to attach to a release plate. Do you have any suggestions or alternatives to attach my digital recorder to a quick release plate? velcro, maybe? plz respond.
I want the h1 but want to uses a xlr mic so can I just get a xlr to 1/8 min jack or do I have to get an xlr box like you?
Wow thanks for replying! It would be I would say $175 tops.
Nice idea for the case. I just put the H1 in my camera bag when I'm not using it, like all my other gear.
when are we going to find ourselves as filmmakers in a situation where we will need to take a picture of a camera with a lens hood on it? and If we ever did, we could easily find a substitute to elevate it
what would be better zoom h1 with xlr pro
or zoom h4n alone
The bundle of accessories from Zoom for H1 (APH-1) only cost A$29 now
Could you make a video on a DIY slider?
Does the H1 come with something to allow me to attach it to a hotshoe?
what's the name and model of your xlr box? where did you buy it?
can i use this as recording my voice for asmr purposes? can you google it if you dont know what it is :)
Awesome! Thanks :)
