Being a phd Scholar myself, thoroughly enjoyed the conversation. It's also gratifying and good to know that people from absolutely different field are getting interested about academics and academicians. Discussing critical concepts in layman's terms, Thanks to Sandesh TV and satyaki for a very informative and engaging conversation.
When you are doing PHD, do we get any monthly salary? If the scholar is Net qualified?

“Why is it called a PhD?” A very interesting and intriguing question asked. I’ve been asked the same by an IITB professor at the beginning of my PhD career. I’ll try to sum up as I understood and realized over 12 years of my research career, starting from IITB.
It’s not just a degree that you get at the end of the tenure. You earn it by learning the philosophy of life. You’ll face the failures everyday, return to your room every night from the lab, empty handed, tired, anxious and frustrated. However, you’ll learn to recollect yourself next morning and fight again to achieve your goal. You’ll have depression as your cell phone in your pocket and at the end of the tenure you’d become a complete different person. A much more tolerant, calm, composed, who values every small big things in life.
This struggle is irrespective of the subject, country, caste or creed. Hence, Doctor of Philosophy. Proud to hold one.

Hello, আমি ক্লাস 12 এর student, বেশ কয়েকদিন ধরে আপনাদের কাজ আমি দেখছি, এবং ধন্যবাদ জানাই আপনাদের team কে এইরকম একটা বিষয় নিয়ে অনুষ্ঠান টা করার জন্য... কৃতজ্ঞ থাকব আপনাদের কাছে, বাংলায় এইরকম একটা channel খুব খুব দরকার যেখানে কোন একটা বিষয়ে গভীর আলোচনা হবে, pls থামবেন না, একজন ক্ষুদ্র science enthusiast এর তরফ থেকে অনেক অভিনন্দন।
ps : খুব ইচ্ছে হচ্ছিল Satyaki Sir আপনার কাজ এর ব্যাপারে জানতে, অন্তত বিষয় টা... যাইহোক, অনেক ধন্যবাদ আপনাকে; খুব খুব ভালো লাগলো, অনেক কিছু শিখলাম।
I think one major point missed throughout the entire discussion about jobs and Ph.D. is connections. By the time you enroll as a Post-Doc, you should have a set of connections (with professors from different universities, same as getting into a Ph.D. program). If you've connections, you can get a job very quickly. That's why research collaboration is so important (right from your Masters degree all the way to Post Doc). Really enjoyed your podcast.

As an aspiring academician it's a blessing to me as it has widened my horizon about the domain of research investigation.
After through listening i become extra prudent about the field. As it was so engaging & full of information that now it's tickling me internallyto share it with my friends & groups , i don't want them to miss this interesting masterpiece.
Apart from this academic interests, I'm as a regular podcast viewer I have never had find such intense level of discussion on topic like this.
When Television is failing so badly social media is almost a recuier to us.

একজন ভারতীয় ছাত্র হয়ে বর্তমানে বিদেশে গবেষণা করার জন্য বেশ কিছু মন্তব্য খুব Stereotype মনে হলো।
1. Public funded / Privately funded research both are equally important, বরং অনেক ক্ষেত্রে privately funded গবেষণা অনেক বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বেশ কিছু ক্ষেত্রে। আমি পদার্থবিদ্যার ছাত্র হিসাবে বলতে পারি, ভারতবর্ষে privately funded গবেষণা কম হওয়ায় technological ক্ষেত্রে ভারতবর্ষ পিছিয়ে।
2. গবেষণার পরবর্তী জীবন নিয়ে সঠিক ভাবে বলা হলো না। Industrial aspect উল্লেখ হলো না।
3. Funding distribution নিয়ে ওমন কোনো অসুবিধা হওয়ার কথাই নয় কারণ Collaboration & Peer environment খুবই strong হয়। যদি না হয়, তাহলে সেটা PI দের ব্যর্থতা।
4. Newtonian & Modern theory নিয়ে বক্তব্য টা খুবই খেলো লাগলো। এটা নিয়ে আরও গভীর আলোচনা দরকার। বরং উপস্থাপক যথেষ্ট সঠিক ভাবে Physics কে বললেন।
5. Science is compromising due to politics. It's the fact in India.
6. Ph.D. admission procedure or better to say put a step in research এটা নিয়ে আরও গুছিয়ে বলা উচিৎ ছিলো কারণ NET/GATE ইত্যাদি পরীক্ষা দ্বারা কারুর গবেষণার দক্ষতা বিচার হয়না। NET/GATE মূলত funding পাওয়ার রাস্তা। যাদের DST Inspire থাকে তাদের NET/GATE ইত্যাদি দরকার হয় না। বিদেশে গবেষণার জন্য কোনো পরীক্ষার দরকার হয় না, মূলত দরকার হয় গবেষণার অভিজ্ঞতা।
7. তথ্যগত কিছু ভুল আছে। Nature এর IF 70 এর কাছাকাছি আর Science এর 63 মতো। Sci hub থেকে পেপার পড়লে author এর কোনো সমস্যা হয় না।
8. ১ টা Journal এ Ph.D. পাওয়া যায় India তে, বক্তব্য টা বেশ সন্দেহজনক মনে হলো।
9. Citation এর থেকে অনেক বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ h-index।
আরও অনেক জিনিস ভালো লাগলো না, তবে এমন episode করার জন্য ধন্যবাদ।
অনেক গবেষকদের ডাকুন, কথা বলুন, সমাজের উন্নতি হবে।

By the way, title of the video is extremely misleading. This video is a very good explainer of scientific pursuits in India (I know it applies. globally as well). I suggest to change the title to reflect the same.

1. Without CSIR UGC NET exam one can also pursue PhD. There are many more other fellowships. e.g. Inspire fellowship, NBHM (for maths), Institute scholarship (Through GATE exam), PMRF etc.
2. Duration of Post Doc is not only 6months or 1yr. It can be 2yrs also.
3. In India, number of publications for getting PhD degree is vary from institute to institute. One paper is not enough in some institutions.

দর্শন শব্দ টিকে derive করলে পাওয়া যায়.... দৃশ+ অনট= দর্শন..… অর্থাত বিশেষ ভাবে দেখা... তাহলে বোঝা যাচ্ছে Phd awarded হলে সে একজন দার্শনিক বা philosopher হয়ে যায় না..... সেটা যে কোন stream হোক না কেন....

Its incorrect at14.39 min, The degree after Ph.D is D.Sc (Doctorate of Sciences) or Doctorate of Literature. Often it's an ornamental degree given to some special in society (like Sandhya Mukhopadhyay Getting it from Jadavpur University) , but some people do get this through their original work.

সব গবেষণা কেন দর্শন ( Philosophy) দিকে যায় তার উত্তর টি বক্তার বক্তব্য থেকে স্পষ্ট নয়। প্রশ্ন কর্তার একান্ত আগ্রহ থাকলে এই নিয়ে আলোচনা করা যেতে পারে । Politics of Research এর বিষয়টি প্রশ্ন কর্তা যথার্থ ধরেছেন। বক্তা বিষয়টি স্পষ্ট করতে পারেন নি। তৃতীয়ত Social Science Research এর বিষয়টি আলোচনার বাইরে থেকে গেল। তথ্যগত ভুল থাকলে যারা গবেষণায় আগ্রহী তারা misguided হবেন । সিনেমা কিন্ত সমাজ বিজ্ঞানে গবেষণার একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ। একজন অধ্যাপক ও গবেষক হিসাবে বললাম। এই podcast follow করি কারন বিষয় ও উপস্থাপনা দুটোই মনোগ্রাহী এই যুক্তিপূর্ণ। কিন্ত আমার কাছে এই আলোচনাটি জমল না।
