This song really hits me. I used to be an outcast in high school. But years and years later im finally starting to break out of my comfort zone and little by little im getting over social anxiety. I've made plenty of friends but sometimes it's still struggling due to fear.
The way I see it, and this is only my opinion, this song is about Jerry and Layne at a crossroads. They love each other like brothers, but they're both aware things aren't going to be the same. Layne's addictions were getting bad, so I think they wrote this song about their future as friends. The first stanza is Jerry talking to Layne, and the Second Stanza is Layne talking to Jerry. The final verse is them recognizing that even if things don't work out, even if they go their different ways, they'll always love each other and be there for each other, somehow or someway. I love you Layne, RIP.
I think youre right. It used to be alice n chains then layne met jerry and the name changed to alice in chains when they decided to work together. Jerry always wanted to go mainstream while layne wanted to go across the grain. They always had differences in styles of playing and you can definitely see in the newer stuff now that layne has passed on.
Brady Rhoads the same thing with Nirvana. Kurt and Dave had very different ideas of where they wanted the band to go but neither was bad. Just different. Just like Jerry wasn't bad, just different. He's more a blues-country-rock guy at heart and Layne's more a punk-metal-doom vibe in terms of music preference. I think they are both great just in different ways.
Brady Rhoads That's actually wrong. Alice 'N Chains was a different band with Layne and Yanni Bacolas. They where more glam and absolutely terrible. Layne actually quit Alice N' Chains/Sleze and joined Jerry's band (then called Diamond Lie). Jerry hated the name Diamond Lie so they changed it and reused Layne's old band's name but changed it to "in". Jerry was always the main writer for DL/AIC band. And btw, No Excuses is solely written by Jerry (music and lyrics). Jerry was tired of having to make up excuses for Layne.
duvy1234 Layne didn't have anything to do with the song. Music and lyrics were written by Jerry Cantrell. Jerry to this day still won't say what its about but a lot of people speculate that Jerry was frustrated with Layne and having to make excuses for Layne's drug issues.
duvy1234 that's not actually true. Layne barely wrote music for AIC (he only wrote 3 - Angry Chair, head creeps and hate to feel). Jerry did almost every song. Jerry is actually responsible for their sound. Layne's contribution was lyrics. You can see in the album liner notes. But for this song, both music and lyrics were written by Cantrell.
Takes me back to 2006 fresh graduate outta high school with my first gf at age 19... Thank God i dodged a bullet there! Lol but this song just brings back nothing but nostalgia . love it.
Kurt and Layne are two great musicians that are missed. Their music has inspired and affected millions. If we're so lucky we'll get 1 or 2 duplicates in a future generation to produce more great music to enjoy and fight over.
THE SONG is a reference to the friendship of Jerry. Jerry wrote the song in a way for Layne. But he loved him anywayyyyyy. Laynes voice holds so much pain and emotion. He is, what pain sounds like. This band is emotionally larger than any other. So glad the 90s happened.
I needed this song right now! Had SUCH a bad day. Thank you so much Alice in chains for this masterpiece and thank you for the upload xXRockRampageXx. This is medicine for your soul. RIP Mike Starr RIP Layne Staley.
Alice in chains brings us the same message Jesus Christ brought Christian's don't understand yet because they haven't separated the wheat from the tares. In the New Testament the anti-christ placed his message(through his false prophets Paul and his followers) right in the middle taking up half of the book. Jesus spoke about this. It's amazing how many great musician's are really messengers from God. The message Jesus taught his CHOSEN DISCIPLES.
I was only talking about the message which is love and faith. You misinterpret what I meant. All religions are false. Basically that is the message that Jesus taught. He spoke in parables just like this song is also. Most Alice n chains songs are written like this though the words might be different they ultimately have the same message. God is the spirit of love, truth and righteousness. The spirit of God is within all of us who want these things whether we realize or not. Music for the soul because the spirit of God is with them.
So let me get this straight.... You believe that "musicians are messengers from god. The message Jesus taught his CHOSEN DISCIPLES." but then you say "All religions are false" Do you realize how much you just contradicted yourself? The whole story of Jesus came from the Holy Bible. The messages you are talking about are ones that you read from a book...A RELIGIOUS BOOK! So you are going to take some of the things you like about Christianity but then allow yourself to ride both sides of the fence by saying "All religions are false". It does not work that way....
I beleive in the word of God to be true which is spoken by his prophets and messengers. They can be found in all relegions. Muslims beleive in the same Jesus Christ and his second coming. The Jews believe in the same Creator but they denied his messenger. All similar but corrupted in different ways. The rulers and kings created these relegions so they could keep us divided and under control so they could conquer. We are not supposed to worship God in a physical building nor create a image or idol to represent. The more we make it physical the less spirutual we become. There's a spiritual battle taking place in everyone. I think its more like a learning process we all have to go through. The closer we get to the end the more truth and understanding will receive.
What can I say I actually tattood this on my body. Layne spoke to the soul. The man wasn't singing to you, telling you what to feel, his own creation. he was like a medium. He just translated. We all understood so well.
I listened to them in high school. That’s when they came out. I remember when Layne passed, I couldn’t believe a rockstar was gone 2 weeks before he was found. It was heartbreaking. My daughter passed recently unexpectedly at 25 from Fentanyl poisoning. I haven’t been able to listen to music for 5 months. I’m back loving him more then ever. I find it so cathartic. Layne helps people get through the worst shit of their lives. With his lyrics from the soul. It’s sad he helps all these people but didn’t get help. I can’t believe what he weighed at his height when he passed. It’s so sad he gave up & no one noticed. 💔🤍🕊 I hope he knows about all the people he has helped. I wish he was still here. I wish my daughter was too.
Layne Staley's vocals are just so hauntingly beautiful on this track. It's a shame he felt that he needed drugs to cope. RIP Layne, gone but never forgotten.
@sporejunkie89 gotta say...some great memories were in the 90's. i still have a super nintendo, and i was just playing some super mario world 10 mins ago lol...but yeah, i remember home improvement, hell every friday was TGIF, and there were other shows that came on after i got out of school that i loved. fucking fantastic..some of the best days of my life. :) good post man. took me back momentarily.
I first found this song through MTV Classic a while ago. At first, I thought this song sounded like TMBG because the drums for this song sounded a bit like Snail Shell, and also because one of the lead vocalists for this song sounded a bit like John Linnell (not being rude, by the way). I then listened to this song shortly after, and I realized that this is actually a very good song. RIP Layne Staley.

What a beautiful song. I don't even have the right words to describe how I feel about this band .... I just put together my first band in 20 years, and we're including this song. BTW, fellow musicians: do what I did, buy a vocal harmonizer (if you don't have anyone willing to do that for real)----damn things sound just like the classic Alice In Chains duo harmonies!_______Love forever, Layne ~ ~

Lol but this song just brings back nothing but nostalgia . love it.
Lane and Mike where ever you are thank you for the classics me and my dad have been listening since I was a kid
yett again another thing of beauty, all we listen to on base.
Kurt and Layne are two great musicians that are missed. Their music has inspired and affected millions. If we're so lucky we'll get 1 or 2 duplicates in a future generation to produce more great music to enjoy and fight over.
This song is life. So beautifuly written and aic is one of those bands that can write great tunes
I love Alice In Chains, rip Lane ❤️

Saw them in L.A. before they broke out and I knew after that show as I was regaining my hearing they would be huge. Thanks for the post.
I love the way the voices harmonize in this song.
I wish music was like this now-a-days
Wonderful 1994 classic!!! This is also a good song to roller skate to!
I thought this song came out last year. I guess i am wrong
Nunya Bidness what
THE SONG is a reference to the friendship of Jerry. Jerry wrote the song in a way for Layne. But he loved him anywayyyyyy.
Laynes voice holds so much pain and emotion. He is, what pain sounds like. This band is emotionally larger than any other. So glad the 90s happened.
Alice In Chains, without a doubt one of the best ever! So hauntingly beautiful in their harmonies.
System of a Down and Alice n Chains are masters of doing this.
This dude had a good voice 🤘🏿
One of the best of the 90s for sure. Layne will be forever missed
A great voice he had
RIP Layne, gone but never forgotten.
this song hit me hard today! long live Alice in Chains. one love

Reminds me to my lonely years on High School... Still, I love this song tho
"ya think it's funny, well you're drowning in it too" few bands can make utter misery sound this good
God damn there will never be a voice like Layne Staley is almost unreal
The 90's were a great time for music. Today, not so much.
Lol
reminds me of Daytona Beach, spring break...too smooooth, great tune to chill with a sunburn and a cold one...killer tune
This has2 be the 1st time I've seen so many comments about the song only.It makes me so fuckin' happy I could cry-this song really get's2 me sometimes(all the time)on so many different levels&in reading your comments I find each unique&2 the point.They all seem2 apply2 the way I feel.This song is rare in the way certain songs so vividly evoke feelings,images etc.from a time I loved.Very few do.P.S. I'm a woman,not a broski(every1 thinks I'm a 20something"bro",I'm a 34yr.old woman.)
No Excuses. AIC. A MASTERPIECE! That guitar RIF at about 2:35ish melts me! Kicks A$$👍
You my friend
I will defend
And if we change
Well I'll love you anyway
Awesome song and awesome way to show lyrics ;) thanks 5/5
What a beautiful song. I don't even have the right words to describe how I feel about this band .... I just put together my first band in 20 years, and we're including this song. BTW, fellow musicians: do what I did, buy a vocal harmonizer (if you don't have anyone willing to do that for real)----damn things sound just like the classic Alice In Chains duo harmonies!_______Love forever, Layne ~ ~
thanks layne!!! where ever you are!
This song is getting me through med school and motivating me to keep losing weight.
