An outstanding cover of Richard Thompson's legendary song.
I watched this expecting to hate it - but I can’t help loving it. A brilliant cover of a brilliant song. I cried my eyes out watching Richard Thompson performing this song, then TH-cam suggested this, and I’ve cried my eyes out a second time.
Have you heard Logan Halstead's version on OurVinyl session? He's only 17 , but he's amazing. He wrote Coal River, and it's on repeat for me.

@@cathyhanley8658 Thank you Cathy for suggesting this! Logan Halstead's version is a brilliant cover from a youngster who is clearly very talented! He may not have Richard Thompson's guitar skills (yet) but he certainly can put a song across! Erm, I hope this won't annoy you, but the thing I find strangely gratifying about this, is that during the 50s and 60s the British folk music scene was totally dominated by bands playing covers of American folk music, but it was all a bit fake, towns, state boundaries, rivers, all got mixed up because a lot of the time the British artist didn't really know what they were singing or writing about. Richard Thompson really wanted to write a folk song in the American tradition of outlaws and cowboys, but he wanted to write about something British, so the only comparable thing he could find in contemporary British pop-culture were the bikers of the 50's and 60's. Our Granddad and Grandma on our dad's side used to be bikers. Our Granddad owned a Norton, a Triumph, and BSA, and though I don't know if they rode round Box Hill in Surrey, they certainly frequented Johnson's Café on the A20. Our Grandad loved American songs about outlaws and people who bucked against authority, so it's really amazing that now there are young American kids covering songs by a British folk artist! Mr Theseustoo, it's okay to cry your eyes out when you need to - I'm not a feminist, and I don't understand feminists slagging off men for being supposedly unemotional and not in touch with their feelings, yet wanting to be more like men themselves? If its true (and I'm by no means sure it is) that women are more emotional and empathic, and men are more rational and logical, then surely the way forward is for women to be more in touch with their rational, logical, side, and for men to be more in touch with their emotional, empathic side, that way we can meet in the middle. I don't know, it's just what I think. I'm just a humble Sindy Doll.. I don't understand you humans, but I wish you could all get along, and I don't think the politics of division will help you do that, but all while people can talk to each other and try to get along, then we can all get along. Vincents. Legendary bikes. Black Shadow probably the best name ever. The Black Lightening almost mythical. We baby boomers were so lucky.
First bike I ever rode when 14 was a Vincent. I remember getting it going down this road thinking wow this great then started to think about slowing down and stopping looking down at my feet trying to remember which one is the brake.
Cool story. Some bikes had shift on right, brake on left, others were opposite.
Abd to complicate matters, a Norton I rode was up for first, down for the rest. One time, going into 4th, I lifted the lever an found myself screaming second gear!
At age 14, I was on my third bike.
First was a BSA, then Harley, then Ducati. I set the Duke up for hillclimbs.
I wish I had one photo of each bike I've owned over the past 55 years.

I've listened to these ladies perform this song at several other venues but still come back to this one as my favorite. Especially love Molly's guitar work. Sheer perfection.

Brilliant song - I first heard it at the 1989 Cropredy Festival in Oxfordshire, which I think was its first performance. This is an EXCELLENT version. It's almost as if Americans can perform it more 'authentically' than English people, which is strange because Richard Thompson is very English, but true. Very good!

Wonderful. I am lucky enough to ride a ‘52 Vincent, for the last 22yr.
I once rode pillion on a Vincent, a Black Shadow I think, back in the UK in the early 60s. I was hitchhiking to Brighton Sussex.

Oooh lucky you. My parents gave me Vincent as my middle name when I was born in June 1952. It was my pa's first name and his mother's maiden name. My sister's youngest boy is also Vincent.

I’ve often wondered how one of my favorite songs with sound with a female voice, it’s less gritty and soaring than Richard’s, but it’s a beautiful and ringing interpretation that turns it into a tru love song more than an anthem
Lady in the black playing that guitar is on it.
Not only great guitar player but a great voice as well.. Easy on the eyes too.
The louder her voice is, the better it is. Very powerful.

Great rendition, great band. It is RT's song, of course, but it is everybody's song. Love their version, Del McCoury version, Reckless Kelly version. And you should have been at Delfest 2018 in Cumberland MD to hear RT and Del play it together, not many dry eyes on the field for that.

This is lovely. Nice to see this performed in the US. (I know Box Hill well, I'm not 21 anymore and I never had a Vincent but it's a lovely spot and I had some great times there on my bike back in the day.)
I used to live in Stevenage the home of the mighty Vincent. There used to be a bike shop owned by George Brown,Vincent's test rider. The story goes he was pulled up by the police doing 140 mph on the old A1 one day and put up before the beak. The case was thrown out of court because the magistrate didn't believe a bike could go that fast! Mind you it was the 1950's.
