  • @michaelharrington75

I came out of a bar one night when I was 24. I realized on the way to my truck that I was too drunk to be driving, so I went to sleep in my truck. It was winter, so I had to keep my truck running with the heater on. About 3 hours later I had 5 cops outside my truck knocking on my window with a flashlight. They finally woke me up and ask what I was doing. I told them I had been at the bar, had drank more than I planned, and knew I was too drunk to be driving.
One of the cops was trying to talk the first officer on the scene to give me a DUI because the truck was running, but he said "No". He told him I did the right thing, and tried to find a hotel for me, but because of a lot of forest fires in the area the hotels were full. He took me back to my truck and said to sleep for a couple more hours, that he'd keep an eye out for me. On the way back from trying to find a hotel the cop said, "i appreciate what you did. I have family driving on these roads, and you chose not to drive drunk." I honestly expected I would be going to jail when those cops woke me up. I slept until daylight, and drove on home.

Yeah, I was helping My Dad put a Stereo in his car while he did the brakes. He had been drinking while we were doing it but we were in the driveway for like 4 hours. I saw the cops drive by a few times and didn't think twice until pops got in to start it up to hear the stereo.. The Cops rolled in 2 deep. They claimed since he was in the seat and the ignition was on he was DUI> He went to jail and everything. It took 3 years for him to get rid of it at trial. He argued the fact that two wheels were still off of the vehicle and it never left the driveway that he was innocent of Operation. Cops can be Co(ks sometimes.

Once I pulled into a circle k absolutely hammered and there was 2 cops pumping gas. I tried to pull it off and walked into the store to buy munchies. They met me inside the circle k and kept asking me how much I had drank that night. They questioned me for about 20 minutes and I hadn’t said 1 word. They said they didn’t have time for it and that if I could find a ride they would let me go. So I got a ride and got away with a DUI. Heh. But I don’t drink anymore.

Nine days after the incident at Target, Skeens, Flores and another officer - Dustin Ketchum - shot and killed Keshawn Thomas at a Valero gas station after they said he had picked up a gun.

    • @stephenmisener1659
      @stephenmisener1659 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The reason it happens is because when you try to physically arrest another cop they are aware of all the techniques. They know what the arresting officer can and cannot do legally. They are aware of how to fight, how to get out of certain holds and grabs. If 1 cop tries to arrest a civilian good chance they can do it, might need help. A cop trying to arrest another cop its entirely chance. Thats not a risk they can take for a variety of reasons, so they try to appeal to the cop so they can come quietly. They are also likely waiting for backup. Remember, in these cases the cops first job is to de escalate the situation. If they can get the suspect to cooperate without physical harm thats ideal. So they will sometimes try to talk people into going calmly, especially if the subject is not escalating it either
Look at how cops are bashed when they immediately go in for grabbing someone and throwing them to the ground for an arrest. Cops dont have to get you second chances but many of them do, many give ALOT of chances because they dont want to A get physical B run the risk of it going wrong.

I think law enforcement needs to spend a lot more money and time on not only thoroughly training their officers in mental health education but also how to deal with people who are clearly suffering a mental health crisis. Maybe stronger consequences for those officers who treat these people badly and don’t go out of their way to help out more??? They treated that man as if he was a terrible criminal. He was struggling and did not seem dangerous even a little bit. This pulled on my heart strings as well. Maybe also having special positions for specialists on “stand-by” to accompany officers on calls like this. There are several things that should change. Sadly, I don’t see it happening any time soon. We just have to hope and pray that maybe more often than not, there will be a good guy on scene trying to do the right thing to HELP people and not lock them up. Smh. This happens way too often. Prayers for this poor guy and anyone else who has to endure this type of abuse. It’s very wrong.

The craziest thing in the second story is that he was clearly at a self-checkout lane. The employee that is supposed to be there is to supervise AND assist as needed. I’m sure if they observed him attempting to pay or even spoken to him, they’d see he’d need more time, or (if they’re allowed to) help him scan his items and pay for the items. I’m sure they were too “inconvenienced” to want to make that effort. The cops were also so impatient with him and didn’t even take the time to notice some accommodations might be needed in this situation.
Hearing him say “I didn’t do anything wrong” breaks my heart and makes this one of the hardest things I’ve seen on this app. I also hope the employee that was supposed to be in the self-checkout was also fired because that’s insane Target’s reaction was to involve the cops instead of just… helping him. Politicians who suggest changes in policing get vilified as being "anti-police" or soft on crime.

I worked in a neurosurgical ward for several years, where young folk came in with traumatic head/brain injury from everything from a horse kick to auto crash. All very long term stay patients as they then maybe came out of comas and maybe learned to walk, talk eat, speak again. Sometimes surgery involved, sometimes not. I want to reach out and hold onto this young man and tell him nothing like this will ever happen again, but i never thought it ever could happen in the first place... ever. @BS-dq1kz ปีที่แล้ว +16

I agree with you but I also want to mention this fact…it wasn’t only other officers who got off more easily. Many others in society did as well.
For example, my papaw was an alcoholic. He drank and drove all the time. Regularly. They’d pass him, knowing he was more often drunk than not and do nothing. They would pull him over if they received a call or if papaw was passed out, etc…He often ran from them and he was such a good driver(insanely good from what I’ve been told by older cops and his friends when I was younger)he would get away. He drove like a madman from what I’ve been told.
The cops would let the family know they were looking for papaw and sometimes they’d come pick him up the next day once he got home. Sometimes, they wouldn’t. Other times, they’d come get him and take him to the hospital when he was having dt’s(I think that’s what it’s called)and help hold him down at the hospital while he was hallucinating.
So, my point is, back in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, there were lots of people like my papaw getting favors from the police, when they should’ve been in jail. Not just fellow officers. Times have just changed all the way around. Thankfully!
As much as I love my papaw and know he was just very sick, he needed to be locked up. He was putting other peoples lives in danger.

They should be aware of the difference between someone acting up and someone who has obvious disabilities as can be seen with the gentleman. They should also have training on how best to safeguard someone in this kind of situation. They could have entered this situation, paid for his bike for him (as in putting the cash in the machine for him as he clearly struggles with his gross motor skills) and reprimanded target staff for their poor management of this situation, but instead they came in and escalated the matter further. Target didn't put their hands on him, the police officers did. Neither of them are right in this situation, but as I said, police officers have a duty of care, which they failed to ensure happened.

As a disabled person myself (I’m autistic) I’m often asked why I’m so scared of cops. I have never had an encounter with a cop that has been positive. I’ve had my meltdown due to overstimulation be interpreted as me being a threat to others and myself (despite me just sitting on the curb of the pavement, without people near me other than my best friend. I was put in handcuffs and screamed at for “not cooperating” which made things worse. My bsf tried to explain to the officer that I was having a meltdown and that I am autistic and he’s making it worse. His partner just leaned on the car and watched. And old woman watching called the fire department who came and, despite dealing with fires and despite dealing with people living mental health issues a lot less than cops, managed to get me out of hand cuffs and managed to calm me down. I wasn’t taken to the station or had any charge for “resisting an officer” cuz of them

It is very sad. I worked with individuals with disabilities. It’s depressing how many ppl try to take advantage of them or act like they’re lesser in some way. Went to a cell phone store with this disabled married couple once & one employee at the store was acting super pushy in trying to get the woman to buy a cell phone or some plan with them that they told them they already have. The man was firm with saying no, but the woman was acting super nervous and always just wanted to please people. She had commonly spent large amounts on things she didn’t want/couldn’t afford just because of that. I can’t control them from spending their own $, but I had to barge in and was like “they said no, they don’t want it. Ok?”And led them out of the store. The lady and her husband thanked me for helping them get out of that situation. I ended up being their favorite person to have working for them lol. It’s sad seeing this man alone and vulnerable like this. It makes me happy I could be there to advocate for my former clients though.

"I don't know the law, legally" sure nice to hear that from a cop :D

That shouldn't really be upsetting to you. What should be upsetting is that they aren't *obligated* or *required* to know the law right up until they fuck it up badly.

I almost cried watching the disabled man getting bullied by both the Target employees and the police. The police are supposed to HELP you not intimidate you and arrest you for absolutely no good reason. I have disabilities myself and it’s so sad watching someone with disabilities get treated so horribly by these bullies… I will NEVER be shopping at Target again!

As an autistic person, for Target becoming “inclusive” you would think they would teach their employees about disabled people and how we are NOT a threat and function just like everyone else despite our disability. It’s not fair to be treated like this because neurotypical people simply don’t understand us😒

"Inclusive" just means more equal access to money, not the person. They could really care less about how the other person was unless they were their upper boss.

This wouldn't have happened if the employee working at the self checkout did their job and helped.

The second story here was absolutely disgusting to see this behavior out of the police. The guy was literally doing his best to buy stuff. It's not like he was even doing a crime or anything that is even against store policy. He literally took a little longer to pay for groceries, and they called the police on him. He shouldn't even have to provide ID.

This is the system working like it's intended to work. Stakeholders and shareholders of the franchise don't give a fuck about anything other than money, so the location manager is paid the exact amount to make him only think about money too, they see this disabled man buying food with money and their perspective on that is that the cripple isn't handing over his money fast enough, so let's call the cops and put this cripple in jail. The function of a human is to hand over money, if you don't hand over your money fast enough, it's fuck you and you are literally worthless.
It's a downward cycle of people learning this is how life is supposed to be (not even mentioning how cops specifically get trained to disregard human aspects of their job).

The fact that you will not shop at target again means nothing to them . What money you spend there is pocket change to them. So I doubt they care if you never shop there again. I am also disgusted with what happened to that poor man. But target is not going to miss your money

@@BonnieEatabrooks your argument holds no ground because why the hell do you care what they care about? If he doesnt want to shop there now atleast he will have a better conscience. Don't give a fuck abot how companies behave, its despicaple 90% of the time anyway.

Refusing to Identify yourself is NOT the same thing as “Concealing” one’s identity. That would entail using a fake ID, providing false information, disgusting oneself etc.
