@Cab🎌Ikari they are both terrible people but you can’t blame her for him deciding to continue drinking excessively for years after she told him to try it once when they first met. How would she know he’d get addicted to it? Both she and her father drank and it helped them to deal with their problems by quietly suffering. Clay used the alcohol as an excuse for terrible actions. He still did all of those things on his own and refuses to take any responsibility and then actively continues to drink while knowing how it makes him act. She was horrible for pressuring him into marriage but she isn’t responsible for all of his actions and likely had no clue how horribly this would effect him. On top of that, she also had plenty of trauma when they met and it’s unfair to only be sympathetic to Clay’s trauma. She grew up watching her mother abuse her father and him turn to alcohol to cope, she was constantly excluded and made to feel useless by her family, was mocked and made to feel even more unloved by the culture and other women around her, and she seemed to start relying on alcohol pretty early in life herself but changed after seeing how it made clay act. Plus he blames Orel for plenty of things he does even when he’s sober and he literally shot his child.

@@delete---7593 he has the most interesting character. Ofc I’m gonna like him. Not for his actions but for how the makers made him so conflicting to himself
Clay I think is a good representation on how bad things happening to a person and being surrounded by toxic people can turn you into something horrible. Something that wasn’t destined to be bad, but was forged to be that way.
Yeah I went through the whole three seasons and once I knew where everything went wrong it makes perfect sense on why you should probably be alone rather than forced something with somebody that you know good and well we’ll never get along at all
And he's so relatable. Once I read someone saying that Clay loved anything that gave him attention since his father didn't give him much, and he saw violence as a sign of affection because his so called "dad" used to beat him
Finding out that one of the main reasons he's an alcoholic is because bloberta made him drunk to seduce him and then physically abused him was very heartbreaking.
She beat him up after making him drunk then since he didn't remember she pretended to take care of him, least favorite character she started the domino affect for all her own problems, and her kids'
For some weird reason that definitely not related to my trauma at all, i want to see clay and bloberta being happy together in their marriage. Maybe theres an au for that.
i don't really dislike him per se he is just a bad person, like a very bad person. i love his character but he shouldn't be liked edit: i love the way his character was coded, and how the writers made him, not clay himself
Besides the time when they met each other is like… idk THE FIRST TIME THE TALK NICELY TO EACH OTHER? They're not being distant in an obligated interaction or fighting lol
I read about how Clay isn't straight nor gay, bisexual, nor anything. He's just completely consumed with his Oedipus complex where he can only fall in love to those who remind him of his Mom, like how Stopframe puts him on a pedestal or how Censordall straight up tells him she's his mother. That's a really interesting take on Clay.
4:34 is so fascinating. It's one of the few times Clay and Bloberta appear to actually get along and enjoy each other's company. A very bittersweet glimpse into the relationship that could've been had it developed properly.
Because while he is bad, he's nowhere near the worst. He actually puts genuine effort into raising Orel to the best of his ability, but his strained relationship with his own father means he lacks valuable experience with what it means to be a truly good father. So he fills in the blanks as best he can. I wouldn't necessarily say that Clay is intentionally a bad father. He's genuinely _that_ incompetent at being a parent, *but genuine none-the-less.* There are even times where he both helps and cares for Orel, and he ultimately wants what's best for Orel even if his methods are misguided. No, the #1 spot belongs to Jonas Venture easily; possibly followed by Mallory Archer in the #2 spot. But I wouldn't even put Clay in the top 10.
@@SergeantExtreme I don’t think I can agree with this point. While I would never say I don’t think Clay loves Orel, he is an incredibly neglectful pans abusive parent. He literally shoots Orel in the leg and then blames HIM for it, and then even goes as far as to tell Orel later that he’s glad that he shot him. He also does not seem to give even an ounce of love to Shapey or Block, and didn’t even realize the two had been switched. While there are a lot of terrible parents in fiction, Clay still manages to stand out as being just an absolute monster of a patriarch. His minimal effort can seep through on occasion, sure, but it is nowhere near enough to honestly say he is not intentionally a bad parent.
@@SergeantExtreme I appreciate your comment because Jonas' always been my pick for worst fictional father, but, seriously, Mallory is nowhere near as bad as these two. clay is one of my favorite bisexual characters in media. bc he’s an awful person no matter who he’s with. and he has these layers that ALMOST make you want to be sympathetic to him. until you remember how awful he is. there’s not a lot of rep of queer characters that you can hate while appreciating the depth of said character.

It's pretty interesting though that both Clay and Orel have peered into other people's lives, Orel through near death and Clay through a nightmare. I wonder if Clay and Orel have some kind of Latent power they're both unaware of, the show doesn't shy away from magic.
the part where Orel is beating up Bloberta and Clay walks in and just... pauses before he yells. it kills me every time, funniest moment in the show to me
at first i couldn’t understand how people related to him but when i finally watched the last episode where clay confronted daniel i was like,,fuck. im just like him
He's been manipulated by so many people around him and takes it out on others instead of working within himself. He's a victim of generational trauma, and Orel has to be the cycle breaker. This show was genius.
It's kinda relieving to see other people relating to Clay, as horrible as that sounds. I guess it depends on why you relate. Personally, I don't relate to him TOO much (his personality either hits very hard or completely misses) but I do see parts of him as the most morbid parts within myself, along with relating to his addiction (the vast majority of me kinning him are his self loathing and addiction)
What if his dad recognized that it was the mom that forces him to eat his son's scraps and- nah there was no way at all that would've ended well after what he did
Well maybe not The show runners have explained some of their plans for where the characters would've gone and they made it a point that clay would only get worse as he refuses to accept any responsibility for himself and refuse to change. The series would've ended with him stewing in his own pit while everyone around him moved on and changed for the better
@@air-head3961 He wanted to be alone before marrying Bloberta so the bastard gets exactly what he wanted as she would've eventually left him for Papermouth. He says he wanted to be alone and now he would've gotten it in the end.

Everyone would've gotten fed up with him and cut him off completely, we even saw that start happening in the Easter special when everyone walked away from him and he broke down in the middle of the bar. Plus in that same episode he kind of reveals that he only sees Bloberta as a trophy to horde, so seeing her leave for anyone, especially for someone he views as less of a "man" than him would've driven him crazy
@@air-head3961 good point, though regardless, I feel like it was something to note as he said that he just wanted to live in a house alone. It just seemed interesting for me as that would've been his fate, to get what his younger self wanted. Being alone. 4:33 I am literally. Oh my god this is the only scene in the show where they get along, isn’t it? Besides the episode about when they met, seeing them joking around like that is. DAMN IT’S SAD
Exactly like the character of clay is very well done, humorous. But he is a terrible person and if he were real, I would hate him. He reminds me of my alcoholic father

scott adsit did such an incredible job making clay complex, hate-able, but still consistently hilarious. he’s probably the only character i regularly laugh out loud at
I wonder if Clay going to rehab would essentially help him get better Also oral probably should get some kind of therapy, he's very literal and impressionable he's trying to do the right thing Also question does anyone else feel like oral is autistic coded?
Clay going to rehab would be an arc I would kill to watch, I do think it isn't entirely late for him yet but, he has crossed some pretty unforgivable lines and if he wants to be better he cannot expect to be forgiven by his son, his wife, his step-kids, or even his lover and especially not the town. I think he had so much potential as a young man to be happy and he genuinely regrets becoming a dad and marrying Bloberta, the best thing he could ever do for Orel and himself is to become a better person. And yeah I know he doesn't deserve or is meant to live in happiness and ESPECIALLY NOT REDEMPTION but it would be nice and powerful to see the "villain" of the show "defeat" himself by putting himself through the wringer and finally learning to take accountability for his own mistakes and just get help. Could be a perfect reason why Orel is still in contact with his father, despite everything he made an effort, it doesn't excuse anything but it's something. Both Clay and Arthur failed to stop the cycle of generational trauma but Orel did, while Arthur was intended to in his dying years repent, Clay was intended to be unable to do the same and remains miserable. As realistic as his intended ending is, I kinda want him to, not necessarily be happy but, not be completely miserable either, just remorseful.

@@killme5630 I assume that means no meat that was factory farmed? Definitely a step up from what a lot of people are okay with if so.
All life depends on death, so I don't see eating meat as inherently wrong though I wouldn't do it.
However, the people who'd insist that you have to eat meat had a completely different outlook, instead according to them believing only humans have souls and that everything else exists only for us to use.
They have no mercy and no respect, they would laugh about the suffering the animals who fed them went through. They would taunt me for caring about other creatures at all.
While I don't regard eating meat as inherently wrong, it does feel very wrong for me to engage in. I haven't eaten meat since i was seven so it no longer looks like food to me. It's kind of similar to my relationship with bugs, regardless of what is "okay" for others to do regarding them, I treat them with as much respect as possible, I offer them gifts and do everything possible not to hurt them even digging ticks out of myself without hurting them. Anything else feels horribly wrong down to my soul.

I love how while everyone was looking at Orel, Bloberta was looking at Clay
I love and hate the tone he takes whenever he gives one of his “lessons” it’s so confident yet sinister at the same time.
4:34 is so fascinating. It's one of the few times Clay and Bloberta appear to actually get along and enjoy each other's company. A very bittersweet glimpse into the relationship that could've been had it developed properly.
it's a rare scene where you can actually see why bloberta married him beyond just her own explanation of "why not?".
Wonder why Clay isn't on more “worst animated fathers” lists 🤔
He is a good candidate. That's for sure
@@SergeantExtreme
I don’t think I can agree with this point.
Neglectfulness and unwilling ignorance don't excuse any of his mistakes as a father figure and... Figure, in general; he just somehow manages to be really close to being as bad as Jonas without even trying.
@@SergeantExtreme But he shot orel tho, and don't want to take any responsibility for it

It's pretty interesting though that both Clay and Orel have peered into other people's lives, Orel through near death and Clay through a nightmare. the part where Orel is beating up Bloberta and Clay walks in and just... pauses before he yells. it kills me every time, funniest moment in the show to me
Clay is the most real person on the show, along with Reverend Putty. I've been going through some shit and I keep relating to Clay more and more.
at first i couldn’t understand how people related to him but when i finally watched the last episode where clay confronted daniel i was like,,fuck. im just like him
He's been manipulated by so many people around him and takes it out on others instead of working within himself. He's a victim of generational trauma, and Orel has to be the cycle breaker. This show was genius.
Relation to clay... Eee
I am not related to clay, but he do have a good point. I think it because Clay is good at heart, but incompetent at life, like most people there is.

If the show didn't get cancelled early, I think we could have seen some slight redemption for Clay
Well maybe not
The show runners have explained some of their plans for where the characters would've gone and they made it a point that clay would only get worse as he refuses to accept any responsibility for himself and refuse to change.
@@stellarkirbo it wouldn't be exactly what he wanted
Clay's a massive ego maniac and basically lives off of getting attention from people, good or bad.
Nobody to bother him, but he doesn't want that now after he became the worst version of himself and gave up whatever good that could've been brought out of him.
Redemption arc isn't always a good idea. For example I think it would ruin his character.

@@intruwuder4183 true
