    Thanks for making this so straight forward! I'm a mechanical engineer student and electrical things terrify me(because they can get expensive quick when you eff up). I was wiring in a new foot pedal for my TIG welder and I couldn't find a simple reason for why my current was at its lowest when the pedal was to the floor. This explained everything! Thanks again.

    Simple but clearly understandable .. I better go on this kind of tutorial rather than those who have many discussion which misleads the viewer to what he/she is trying to come up with. keep on making such kind of videos.. from the schematic/wiring diagram, to the actual wiring .. THUMBS UP>>

    Do you hook up a speaker the same way as you did the fan? I'm still a little confused on how it would work in this manner.
    Audio output from an amp board; has + - How would I hook it up to a potentiometer then speaker? I'm thinking + - from the audio board to the outer pins on the pot. Then the center wiper blade to the + on the speaker and the - from the speaker back to the neg on the pot? It worked with my LED

    what is the impedance between the two outer terminals when you turn the fan down?? aren't you effectively creating a short in your power supply? not sure if i would want to do that to a $150 PSU for a computer. that's why they use transistors and end up bleeding off heat in the other "simple fan controller" setup.

    Would that wire diagram work to wire speakers to a radio? The radio volume control is stuck on high. So I figured it's easier to just wire it with an auxiliary potentiometer outside between the speakers and car output speaker wire. What do u think?

    • @budzillasohoski9858
      @budzillasohoski9858  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      M a little confused by your question. You shouldn't need a resistor with a pot as the pot is simply an adjustable resistor. You don't need to limit your Device at 18 amps as the device will only use the current needed. It's not like voltage.

    I'm considering running a blower through a pot for fine speed adjustment. Would this work? How would I prevent the current from going too low?

    • @budzillasohoski9858
      @budzillasohoski9858  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can't really use a pot with an AC motor. Because of the way a fan/blower motor (shaded pole induction), the fan wants to run at a certain speed as it chases the polarity/waveform of the input voltage. You can buy a fan controller switch at a hardware store but it generally gives you 4 settings off, low,medium and hi.

    Has anyone done a video about (How to wire two potentiometers in series?)
    I have a situation where there is a 1Meg single turn potentiometer. It is TOO difficult to set it with accuracy because it is single turn. I was told that I could increase the accuracy or make it much easier to fine tune if I add a 10k ohm potentiometer that is 10 turn but I need to hook it up in series.. Is anyone up for the challenge? Hi Ana! Actually no. If you want to wire it as a variable resistor, you would only wire two legs of the potentiometer. So let's say you had a small motor, a battery and a potentiometer. From the positive of the battery, run a wire to one of the outside legs of the potentiometer (doesn't matter which one). Run a wire from the negative of the battery directly to the negative of the motor....then run a wire from the center leg of the potentiometer to the positive of the motor. That's it! Hope this helps.

      If it has three leads, one is ground, one is for low speed and one is for high speed. Just omit the low speed wire since the potentiometer will adjust it from off to high

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +John Smith Varied resistance varies the current. Here, you are varying the voltage by using the voltage reference for the third leg. If you wire all three legs, the voltage of the center tap will be the minmum of the left leg, max of the right leg, 'left' and 'right' is totally subjective here. If you wire only two legs, which requires the center leg plus one of the left or right legs, then it will just function as a variable resistor, which will limit the current output. The voltage can also reduce in this case, but the amount of voltage reduction will be relative to the load, and to the original voltage.

    6-2 = 4 ( 4 Amperes I want to achieve).
    Can you please tell me which potentiometer should I use or how can I do that anyway ?

    I can't get my simple LED to come on with this setup. but the way i set it up, i can... Setup on bread board: Power source+>jumper>center pole of pot>out through right pole of pot>220ohM>+LED leg>out through -LED leg>jumper to comm of (-)power source. if i vary the comm leg, left/right, i can clockwise increase/decrease resistance depending which side comm is in relation to LED/resistor. i took everything except pot off, set up circuit just like you did (exchanging fan for simple 2 pole little LED and 220 ohm resistor)and triple checked breadboard placement.
    OR is the low voltage of the LED preventing dimming or even lighting up.
    VERY new to e-, sorry. i'm trying to build a bench power supply with adjustable volt and amp, thought i had the pot figured out and this video threw a wrinkle wrench in my monkey gears(purposeful misquote).

    Do you need a special potentiometer to use in a 12v 10A to 25A power supply circuit? The sellers rarely give amperage specs on the potentiometer listings. I have a power supply made from a computer PS. I want to make it variable. Seems simple enough. But I do not want to fry my potentiometers or damage other components in the process. I have a bunch of 10k linear pots but I am guessing they might be rated around 3 to 5 A?
