- CHAPEL OF BONES | We bones that are here for yours are waiting | Évora, Portugal. The Chapel of Bones is a monument of penitential architecture of the Alentejo. This chapel, of skulls and bones, was built on the site where initially was the dormitory and reflection room of the friars. It is formed by three naves of about 18.70m long and 11m wide. Natural light enters these ships strategically only through three small cracks on the left side.
The Chapel of Bones, in Évora, is not the only one in Portugal. This chapel is in the Church of São Francisco, one of the most beautiful and expressive in Portugal. The church of San Francisco was built between the years 1480 and 1510 and the beautiful architecture is of Gothic-Manueline style. It has ten side chapels, with paintings from the Renaissance era Portuguese and tile decoration. The first great playwright Portuguese, Gil Vicente (1536), is buried in the Church of San Francisco.

How to get to Évora from Lisbon?
The distance from Lisbon to Évora is 134 km. One option is to choose the bus as your means of transportation. Departing from Lisbon, the duration of the trip is 1h45. If you decide to go by train to Évora, the ticket can be purchased through the Comboios de Portugal website. The trip is very pleasant and there is nothing better than taking the opportunity to get to know the landscapes of the region.

Single ticket to visit the Chapel of Bones, the Museum Center and the Nativity Scene Collection. The visit to the Church of San Francisco is free.

The poem displayed in the Chapel of Bones, further reinforces the sense of the rapid passage of life and the final destination.
The authorship of the sonnet is attributed to Father Antônio da Ascenção Teles, parish priest in the church of São Francisco, between the years 1845 and 1848.
"Where are you going, walker, accelerating?

Business, you don't have more important,
Than this, in your sight presented.
Remember how many of this life has passed,
Reflect on what thou shalt have a similar end,
That to meditate cause is quite
To have everyone else at a standstill.
Ponder, that influence of this fate,
