DIY Heavy Duty 3 point Receiver Hitch

- I have designed and fabricated a heavy duty 3 point receiver hitch for my Massey Ferguson 35 tractor. Total cost was under $20 by using scrap steel and a recycled truck hitch. Fun and easy build allowing me to hone my Tig welding abilities.

Damn. Guy has a TIG welder but the drill press is something that Leonardo da Vinci got at a yard sale.

@@thardyryll I was introduced to these "post" drills a couple of years ago. I was in a friends shop and he had one right next to an electric drill press. He had me use the post drill and I was amazed and fascinated . Took me 3 years of searching estate and yard sales until I found one for my shop. Very glad to have it.
I totally forgot about the project when I saw that sweat drill press. That thing is amazing!

Nice. I am considering making one for skidding logs, but with horizontal and vertical 2" receivers (for bumper pull and gooseneck). Titan makes a "Transformer" attachment that comes closest to what I want. These are either not in stock or unavailable. Time to build one better. BTW, the top vertical receiver would accommodate a slide in gooseneck hitch ball and/or a cantilever log boom. I'd also make a bumper plate that would slide into the horizontal receiver so a skidded log wouldn't bang into the hitch.
I like what you are describing. I am sure what you build will be stronger than the store bought alternatives. I like the bumper plate idea if I start skidding logs I might have to make one to fit my hitch.

I like how you describe things while building this hitch. Certainly is heavier duty than I can buy 'on-line' ! Looks like you've build a good hitch assembly here.

I'd be perfectly fine with trusting those welds. 👍 Nice to see you tackle this project, as the cheap junk metal you get with an 'affordable' 3 point usually ends up as a thin wall POS that might work for awhile but will distort and bend all to crap when you need to work it. Even if you spend the equivalent in new steel and DIY one yourself, at least you know you're going to end up with a quality unit that will be a lifetime item when you really need it to work!
That's kind of the fun part of fabricating your own implements, too. You don't have to follow the standard form and can make anything you want to do a given job, it can be totally overbuilt and take a beating. Doesn't much matter if it's pretty, so long as it's functional. If you end up with both, that's a bonus! I've got a plow project in the works that is cut out of an old boiler, it sure won't be pretty, but it's literally built like a tank, haha.
I agree I looked at the cheap junk and it looked so flimsy. I have amassed all these tools and need to come up with excuses to learn how to use them lol prime example would be my sawmill build....that was a big project testing all my self taught skills. I would love to see a picture of this plow project sounds like it will be a beast.
@@thedelcodave It's on the back burner for a bit til I get an engine swap done for a '77 JD 214 that's become an ever deepening quagmire for what started as a simple project. "I just need to grade a spot for a workshop..." Isn't that how this always starts? 😁 It does give good excuses to play with new tool acquisitions though, like a plasma cutter!
@@C-M-E oh how much trouble I could get into with a large workshop. Currently my space is very limited I tucked my MF35 into my garage and that filled it to capacity.

Its a workout but really does drill nice holes. Never have to worry about over heating the drill bits lol.

For having limited use with the TIG i think you did well. Your welds appeared to have good penetration. Good job!
Practice makes perfect I still think I prefer mig for the speed. But Tig is nice don't have to worry about sparks flying.

It is one awesome machine. It will be ever nicer when I finally get to machine the reversing gear. I also would like to extend the 2 inch pipe lower so I can lower the table for longer bits or taller parts.

Standard category 1 height is about 13-14” for a subcompact and 15” for about a35-45 hp tractor.
Nice way to recycle a vehicle trailer hitch for a tractor.
It was a fun recycle project and has been a very handy addition to my tractor.
Compliments to you and your drill press ; ironically i have aquired an old 21" Royersford drill press made in Royersford PA .its a beautiful old girl ,art-deco style castings, and a multi-speed power downfeed. Obviously Obviously

Looks great. Found this video, after I had built one almost identical. Unfortunately, I didn't have any scrap laying around so mine cost more like $120. Still half the price of a decent American made hitch and twice robust as the crappy imports off Amazon.
The import stuff on Amazon is complete garbage for sure.
Man it is awesome that you built your own implement but that handrail although it is cool there is no way I would find me a drill press that would drill it😂😂
Why buy when you can build. I love my handcrank drill press. May be the best estate sale find ever.

31 inches left to right on the bottom receiver tube not counting the pins. 18.5 inches from top to bottom. If you need more numbers let me know.
Where did you get a chuck to fit that old drill press?
I bought an adapter that goes from the taper in the back of the modern chuck to 1/2 round that fits perfectly in drill and locks in place with the square headed set screw.
Its a glorified trailer hitch, right?
Well I prefer glorious trailer hitch. Fits into the 3 point hitch on my tractor for added versatility for a tractor I have not logical reason for owning lol.

You need no apology on the welding or any of the build for that mater all is much better than the Chinese knockoff. Beside it is : MADE I USA

Nice build, but you would have been better off welding the nut in side of the plate,, just MHO
I was back and forth on what to do with that part. Doubt I will wear out the pins... but welded to the plate inside would make for a quicker swap if something bad happened to a pin.
@@thedelcodave I was thinking more of it comming un threaded cause then you have to cut everything off and reweld,, just a thought
@@skeets6060 I have that covered I tack welded the nut to the pin so that it can't untread.
If you don't do it now you will regret if you don't

This is my first tractor and I do not have any Implements. So I had to design this as I built it.
