  • Having toured the old town on a special tram, we were given a tour of the tram sheds and workshops after which I jumped on a regular service tram to take a look at the rest of the system. Join me for a last look at Sarajevo’s fascinating tram system including a number of driver’s eye view shots.

    Lots of TATRA trams, just like here in Romania. The T3 has been proved very reliable all across Eastern Europe.

      The Tatra trams are popular in Sarajevo because they are not complicated and much easier to maintain than modern trams.

      Sarajevo has known some tough times recently during the break up of the former Yugoslavia, but it is recovering well. The city uses old trams because they can be repaired and kept running on track that is less than ideal. The trams were lively, but still comfortable, it didn't stop us having a wonderful time.

      Some of them are repaired and patched up after accidents, fires and shelling during the war

    More great views Tim. I really like the city view as you ride.
    Probably looks magical at night. For the purists...clunks, bumps, rattles and noise.

      Hi, the depot was interesting, the tram fleet was severely damaged during the siege and replacement trams were donated by other European cities, but the complex electronics and cost of spare parts meant that as they broke down they were taken out of service and replaced by much older, but less complicated trams for which spares could be made in the workshops or were available at an affordable price.

    Very nice shots. In fact, they have an entire European museum driving around. Of course I immediately recognize the DÜWAG GT8 from Cologne and the SGP 6-axle from Vienna. Very nice ride by the way, where you can also see something from the driver's seat. In Graz there were also used Vienna vehicles, but they have all long since disappeared.
    It is a pity that there was no ride in the DÜWAG. Apparently they bought the things from Konya, and since about 200X they have them from KVB in Cologne.

      Hi, Sarajevo tram depot was a lesson in how to mend an old tram. Some of newer trams had been donated to the city, but unfortunately they contained expensive to replace or difficult to repair electronic components causing many of them to be dumped, whilst older models that could be repaired without the use of expensive imported parts were still running. The city cannot buy new trams or spend money on the system, because passengers simply cannot afford to pay for higher fares. The city is a culturally fascinating place, recovering from a long and turbulent recent past, a visit to the war museum is very worthwhile, it shows how people survived, it is not a sad place, it portrays an optimistic vision where the young who grew up during the siege are enthusiastic about their future, they don't want to dwell on the past, they want a peaceful, happy and hopefully prosperous future. They will get new trams one day 😉

      Yes, it's a rolling museum with a cross-section from all over Europe. But this proves how long such a vehicle can be driven with the maintenance it deserves.
      The culture of the city and region is certainly worth seeing and experiencing. Since my wife would like to go to the Plitvice Lakes National Park, I have applied for an extension to Sarajevo :D. This summer it won't work out, but maybe next one will?

      I think many are 50 or more years old, but these trams leave me questioning the benefits of new technology, because a new tram does the same job as an old one.

    Well that must’ve been a while ago, as the vehicle numbers have been changed since October 2017! Great view of the depot. How did they let you in? Btw did you see the K2YU n°283? It’s left rusting in the backyard for a good 15 years now

      Hi, this was filmed 10th June 2017. I was traveling with a tour to see steam in the former Yugoslavia arranged by the "Railway Touring Company", they also arranged for our visit to the tram Depot. There was an old K2YU tram numbered 238 rusting at the back of the depot, I have no photos of 283 and I was unable to find any information about it.

    At 10:20 is a close up of a Faiveley pantograph minus the contact shoes which would be attached to the bar on the left. Behind it is two pieces of girder rail on the floor supporting something. The girder rails are used in street track work to provide guard rails in the pavement. These rails are opposite the way they should be in track as the area the wheel flanges ride would be on the inside of the track and the wheel treads should ride on the larger surface of the rail.

      There was quite a collection of pantograghs around the depot area of several different designs. The rails in the background were being used to support some sort of jig and you are correct to point out they would be the opposite way round if they were being used for their intended purpose.

      That's great news, will the tracks be upgraded for the new trams? I hope they keep a couple of the older trams for visiting enthusiasts to ride.

      @@Timsvideochannel1 tracks will be reconstructed from Ilidža to Marijin Dvor, including Skenderija terminal stop for trams where they rotate to change course, also there will be construction of new tracks from Ilidža to a place Hrasnica which has Industrial complex with about 20 tram stops and depot could be moved to Hrasnica instead of the place where is it now

    Hello Tim, you do right to use tram at foreign town. To get to know small towns or downtowns of big cities one uses the best feet, at bigger towns tram. When the Berlin Wall fell, I spent my next holidays in the tram of East Berlin (with lots of stops). - Heinz

      I enjoy riding trams, it must have been interesting visiting East Berlin shortly after the wall fell.

      Yes, it was. A total other world compared with West Berlin and West Germany. And peoples were friendly and helpfull and not money greedy. But (Western) economy and politicans destroyed all hopes to a better world...

      It was good that you witnessed the reunification of Berlin. As for politicians I would like to see the way they are selected changed, so ordinary people are better represented and there should be a ban on those who studied politics at university, because they have no experience of the real world, always wanting to borrow and spend money with no idea how to run a business or earn money.

      Yes, this wheels wait to be re-profiled. But what a difference compared with e.g. railway wheels at Switzerland.

      I have a lot of respect for the men who keep Sarajevo's trams running. The old Tatra trams are ideal because their simplicity means they can be repaired, unlike many newer trams. Electronics are being updated all the time making the previous generation of parts impossible to repair or replace. Many of the machines in my workshop are around 15 years old, in very good condition, but really expensive and difficult to repair when the electronics go wrong such as an LED screen or a hard drive from the 1990's. Manchester is scrapping trams that are relatively new because the drives are out of date. Not all progress is good, an old tram is as good as a new one, just a lot more complicated. The wheels will be re-profiled on either the big lathe or the vertical borer. The Swiss will use a purpose built machine to re-profile the wheels, but it might also be very old.

      Tim, just today I told a friend about the benefits of simplicity in engineering and the splitted organization in technical production in the former Eastern States. For example, Tatra trams in Czechoslovakia and heavy diesel locomotives (like Ludmilla) in the Soviet Union. Also forced by lack e.g. a list of the chemical substances (about 30,000) used in production, their quantities and their use or production in chemical engineering processes at GDR. This list was information source to other companies. Btw: This register was ignored by the German government at an expensive project of a western company to 'investigate' soil pollution in the GDR. German government was asked about this list and why ignoring by a member of German parliament. You may imagine the 'reply'.
