    Feels like a tough year for potatoes! I'd still be so chuffed with the harvest even that little one! It will still taste nice 🌱🙃

    Those tiny potatoes are great cooked in with green beans. Also in stews and soups. Great harvest. Mine did not do that well. I have one more container to empty.

    not bad at all in the end and wouldn't be surprised if the squishy ones were just the remains of the original seed

    Like with carrots, it's always exciting to see how plants growing away under the soil are doing. Great harvest!

    If there's one thing that I hate in the weather, it is wind - just destroys so much in the garden. Can be heart breaking sometimes. Glad you got some decent spuds anyway. Lol at finding your dibber - I'm forever misplacing my garden tools. I don't know how as I only have a tiny garden 🤦‍♀️😅

    Hi Ivan.
    Now that was interesting.
    Cos you had at least one potato that was turning red.
    I wonder if you originally planted reds and because you harvested early the "red" colour hadn't developed yet.
    Same thing happened to me last year...reds went in, whites came out, lol.
    🤔🤔🤔🤔🤯🤯🤯🤯

    Some of my kestrel spuds have broken stems too. Second earlies planted in early april. A cat was sleeping in the shade of the foliage! :D Wondering how they'll be.

    Hi Ivan
    If I grew the little berries on the top, should I let them dry out before sowing them? And when should they be planted please?
    Also Epsom salts- the only ones I could think of are the bathing ones in home bargains, bought them and used a pinch at a time in a watering can, only today I found westlands Epsom salts, will they work the same or have I killed my broad beans?
    Thanks Ivan for your great channel full of advice

    • @ivans-gardening-allotment-uk
      @ivans-gardening-allotment-uk  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they need to be mashed soaked then dried out
      Sow seeds as normal indoors early in year then plant out after last frost
      Thank you Samantha

    Hiya, Cani ask if you would normally compost the potato foliage or do you just bin it?

    I've got a potato plant that still hasn't sprouted....Purple ones to be exact - I suspect the seed could have rotted away. Is what it is innit.
    I detect a little bit of tarn accent. Where you from?

    This is my third year of tatties in pots, some quite big containers but I have a feeling I'm not planting them deep enough, should they be nearer the bottom of the pot? I usually put them about a quarter down it.

    • @ivans-gardening-allotment-uk
      @ivans-gardening-allotment-uk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not all 1st and 2nd early potatoes flower but if they do harvest after the flowers have died back usually around 17 weeks
      For maincrops let them completely die back before harvest

  • @stephyclaws
    @stephyclaws ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I know you harvested this plant because it was damaged but how do you generally know when to harvest potaoes? Xx

    • @ivans-gardening-allotment-uk
      @ivans-gardening-allotment-uk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Steph
      First and second earlies are usually ready after
      12 weeks first early
      17 weeks second early
      wait for them to flower and let all the flowers die back before harvesting
      For main crops wait until the whole plant as died back then cut off the tops and leave unwatered for 2 weeks this will toughen the skins and then they will store longer
      Thank you
