he almost certainly meant dendrochronology. Which is taking a core out of some of the stumps and counting the rings or, in the case of lumber or deadwood, graphing the distance between rings and comparing that graph to a graphed average of trees of a known age to back trace how old it was and in which year when it was cut down.
