Elon Musk / Tesla builds rockets; Tesla can easily build a TOC Interceptor, as in the Finnish shipyard. But will he or any billionaire offer such financial support , . . ?

Much like the solar roadway fiasco of the past. People are so desperate for a tech savior to swoop in with a magic bullet solution to complicated environmental problems that one can make a lot of money basically reinventing the incredibly destructive practice of trawling.
We also need to work with those communities to improve their systems so they don't just toss more trash into rivers. Help clean that up and get a better system in place so they can live in a cleaner, healthier environment and community so they don't have trash everywhere.
There was an interview with some people living out there in the very polluted areas of south Asia, and they said they hate it, they are miserable and sick, but there is no central disposal. No garbage pickup, no designated landfill or recycle stations. They effectively have nowhere to throw their garbage. :(
@@Oktobot12 this is why we need to come up with some sort of plan to try and help them. Perhaps we can try and get local governments involved and see if we can try and make some improvements.
Also we should work with companies to phase out using plastic all together. And demand that companies and nations dont just throw their trash in countries willing to take it because they need money (like India, Myanmar, Indonesia, etc) This is such a cool system, but I feel like if we really want to prevent more waste from going into the ocean, we need to nip the production of plastic first. And that would mean restructuring our economy and politics, atleast here in the US

Yes and no. Most business owners already know their business is under threat of going out in a fairly small amount of time (under 3 years) and they plan things out for the business to keep surviving for much longer. Many still fail to accomplish that. (Cue in that 90% of startups fail figure) But Boyan takes a “glass half-full” mentality where once his business is done, he leaves knowing he finished making a big impact. So he’s aiming for business closure that is not so much a doomed bankruptcy as much as a mic-drop.

It comes down to our consumption choices and our outrage at plastics companies that keep foisting their responsibility for sensible disposal onto us. They keep extracting more oil and producing more products in plastic than we need, replacing durable products with single use items that end up breaking down into micro fragments that we can't get rid of. It's not sensible to rid ourselves of all plastic, given its benefits and flexible uses, but it's also nonsensical to not even consider their life cycle and leave the loop open ended. This project has given far greater consideration to what happens with the trash than any plastic manufacturer has ever done. They've shown that with some ingenuity and willpower, they can reproduce waste into marketable items for future consumption.
All of this would still be useless if we don't tackle the source. More research should be put into sustainable plastic alternatives. Even I'm guilty of using plastic even though I've tried reducing the amount of plastic I use.
@@6thgraderfriends Yeah there alot of factor in the equation to find the solution. We need to tackle the source as it produces so much however to maintain our living we need to find solutions and do the same in low income areaas.
@@MarcF.Nielssen But that was 70 years ago when glass bottles were in mass production and were much cheaper. Trees were abundant, so more paper were produce for paper bags, butcher paper and wax paper. Now with deforestation and the change to plastic of most factories for cheaper yet durable production, it's going to be hard to revert back thee usage of it. It can be done though but not as an immediate solution. Just like how the gradual use of plastic increased in time, people would gradually decrease their use of plastic. However it is integrated into everything that it would hard not to use plastic at all.

Gotta keep this going. I saw a lot of garbage in the water during a cruise from LA to Hawaii back in '98 and just could not figure out where it all came from. And I love that they're trying to catch it at the rivers as well. So smart!!! :)

Nice in theory, but do more research on what it really takes to recycle plastic. Most if it never gets recycled. People don't clean their containers, they don't separate lids, take off labels, etc. It's way more complicated than you think.

70 years ago, there was no household plastic, No bags, no bottles, no wrappings. We survived.
