One week post op and I am feeling really good. Wanted to provide an update to regarding the Laminectomy Surgery & Recovery one week after surgery and how my body is reacting after the procedure.
After years of dealing with lower back pain, tingling and numbing in my legs and feet, I finally decided to get medical help tp find out what the issue is.
It was discovered that I had stenosis in the L3, L4, & L5 area of my lower back.

I quick video talking about the laminectomy procedure I had last to correct stenosis in my lower back. I had this procedure done last week. Recovery is going pretty good so far.
Hi Mike! Thank you for posting this. Your experience has certainly giving more optimism. I’m getting ready to have a Laminectomy procedure on Friday. I can honestly say I’m beyond terrified man.

I was okay until 3-4 days out from surgery then I started getting a little anxious, especially if I wasn't staying busy and my mind wandered and I started overthinking it. Hopefully your surgery is uneventful, recovery goes well and you're back to living life. Keep us posted!

Hi Mike, and guys, I am 72 year old male. Some 50 years ago had leminectomy was in traffic Branch motor bike fight lol bike won. Had very bad fall some 6 six months ago now C 5;6;7 are gone T section 11&12 fractured L4/5 S1 need double fussion Major slippage at lower back pain into groin Butt both sides calf’s both sides c gets me in both arms if I have back that is not going to fix cervical DONT like taking junk to live however I am now Forced to have fussion as pain isoutofthis World bone spires now growing in neck also. Glad you got over operation Mike just very very Worried shitless.
@@desgoulding7154 my buddy who's a few years younger than you, who i train jiu jitsu with is a welder and over time from using momentum from moving his head to close his welding gear to protect his face and eyes, needed to have spurs removed and also needed his neck fused as well. Took him about 5-6 months to be almost 100% and another 6 months before he was able to get on the mats again. hope your surgery and recovery aren't overly complicated and you can get back to enjoying life
Just had a laminectomy done ar L4 and L5. I had the exact same problems as you. Severe stenosis and tiny nerve passages. First few days were rough but rhis totally resolved my pain and numbness. Mad I didn't do this 10 years ago! Muscle relaxers are definitely the key. Good luck!
I'm a little more than 3 months post op and I'm feeling great! I'm doing all my favorite activities pain free. So glad I had this done and life is so much better now
I had a laminectomy microdiscetomy on May 10th for L4-L5 disc herniation measuring at 10mm. I used chiro care for 7 yrs not truly knowing that i had a back injury. April 2 i was getting ready for work and was feeding my pets before i left, like always, when i squated down and felt something pull in my low back left site. I couldn't get up. Once i did, i hobbled out to my vehicle, and i couldn't get in it. 10/10 pain in my hip and leg foot was numb. It hurt to stand hurt to sit. I was stuck. Called my sister to take me to the er instead of me going to the er to work. MRI showed i completely blew out my disc and was surgical. I was feeling sore for the first 2 days post op was kept overnight even though i was told it was a same day surgery due to going into OR late report timewas 10 am surgery was schedulec for 12 went in around 2:30. Pain management overnight first nignt was 5mg of oxy then 4ish hrs latee was 10mg of oxy. After that, i managed with just tylenol. Over the past 3 days i'vebeen feeling tight and a bit sore again. I'm just trying to just lay low and use anti-inflammatory and ice during the day. Heat helps at night. Hopefully, in the next couple of my back brace comes in, and i can get my PT started. Back to work mid august for me. Got a long and boring summer vacation since i can not do anything. Asked at my second follow-up if i could go to the beach. Was told i can't even walk in the sand at the beach. Yay for this long summer
My goodness, I'm sorry to hear that you went through all that agony. Sorry that your recovery will be occupying your summer. Hopefully when it's all over with, you'll be feeling like a million bucks and you're back to doing what you love

Ya dealing with this issue for so long was....I grew tired of it. Affects everything I do.

My doc is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spinal surgery.
I broke my L4 L5 and 2 discs herniated. Going for my mri I learned that i have spinal stenosis.
Its been 6 moa since my back fracture and my legs are both numb it was just my lower leg but now its from my butt to my toes. With the numbness there is pain in my hips too and tingling. Painful spasms constantly and I’m not able to hold my urine. The moment i feel i need to go. I have to go or I’ll be unable to hold it.
I’m taking muscle spasms med. it won’t make my spasms all stop but it helps.
Its scary that i can’t feel anything buttocks to toes.
I can’t lift my feet up to put my socks on. This has happened so fast.
It almost feels like I’ve got something like long socks on they are crushing. The physical therapist said that this is causing muscle atrophy. Which is killing me both painfully ,and mentally bc i have always been so active. I can’t even walk 50 feet to my mail box. I have my mothers walker bc i can’t walk without it. My doc wanted to do the surgery asap bc he said my stenosis is very severe and there is nothing for space left in my spine. So my nerves are being crushed quite badly.
I’m just so nervous to have surgery on my spine and end up worse. But this disease has taken over my life and taken my quality of life. I can’t do anything or go anywhere. Did you have an orthopedic spinal doc for ur surgery or did you have a r neurosurgeon ?
I’m in so much pain and lost so much. I’m very nervous about the surgery, but if it will take this pain away, if it will let me feel again. I will definitely be happy to have surgery. When asked, will I get the feeling back that I’ve lost, and will\ this horrific pain end. The pain is never ending , Im so desperate for it to stop I want to walk my dog again. Bring my trash outside to the dump mop

yes the numbness I had experienced worried and freaked me out as well.
Luckily, after surgery and you are able to be more active, you can reverse the muscle atrophy - unless there are other ailments that will prevent you from being active again.
I went to an orthopedic surgeon. The last visit I had with him, he told me that the numbness will go away with time as the nerves that were impacted by the stenosis fix themselves and he stated it could take up to a year for all the nerve damage to repair itself.
the surgery may not take 100% of the pain away (I kept my expectations low so I wouldn't be disappointed), but quality of life will be much improved. My pain is at about 5-10% in my lumbar area compared to what it was prior to surgery. I would experience pain if I sat too long, stood too long...I couldn't win :(
But things are much better now and hopefully you will get the relief that you are wanting.

@drd6893 my situation was a lot like yours. Had severe central and foraminal stenosis from L1-s1 . Numbing from toes to buttocks when walking. Etc. Had my surgery May 1st 1024 (3 weeks ago) open laminectomy without fusion. Thank god! My surgeon is a neurosurgeon. 4day hospital stay was brutal! But each day after that it gets better and better. My leg issues are all cleared up. Decompression was very successful. We just have to heal up the surgery site and we should be fine. It will take a couple of months so they say. Everyone’s different. I’m walking 20 minutes 3 times a day for exercise. And to be honest, that’s when I feel my best!
I say have the surgery because stenosis is un curable and only get worse! Just make sure you have a great surgeon.

This is great to hear! I plan on having a L4-L5 laminectomy in July. I’m hoping it will only be two weeks before I can get back to singing and playing guitar for my gigs.
Just don't get into the mosh pit and you'll be fine 😀

Yeah, no mosh pits, but I have to lift 30+ pound speakers to put them on poles, and I have to stand for 2-3 hours for my gigs while I play and sing. Just wondering if that might take more time before I can do that.
@@gregluce8020 chances are it might but that's a discussion you'll need to have with your physician / surgeon. I didn't have many restrictions since I'm very active so my recovery time was pretty quick.
I’m scheduled for laminectomy May 21. Can’t deal with the sciatica any more from stenosis. I’m so glad I found your video. The first one that hasn’t instilled more fear. I’m hoping my experience is like yours. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! The first couple of days post op were the worst. Day four was better. By day ten I was better. I'm a month out and things are great except for a little stiffness and being a little sore. I had my first follow up a week or so ago and things are looking great! Hopefully you'll get relief and your recovery goes well 🤞

I WAS PETRIFIED OF THE SURGERY WHICH I HAD 10 TEN DAYS AGO....ALL THAT WORRY FOR NOTHING..... NEVER HAD ANY PAIN WHATSOEVER AFTER THE SURGERY.....A LITTLE STIFFNESS AND LIMITATION BUT NO PAIN....ONLY HAD TO TAKE PAIN MEDS FOR ABOUT A DAY OR SO....THE MINIMALLY INVASIVE PROCEDURE IS THE WAY TO GO.

Glad your progressing nicely. Bummer about the Sea Otter, was looking forward to riding some dirt with you, however, worst thing you can do is push too hard too early. Sounds like your over the worst part now!
Luckily Sea Otter is still a month out. Anything's possible. I'll know more after my first follow up appointment.
Greetings Sir, my Gratitude and Thanks for posting these updates, my prayers for your continued recovery and many years without relapse... I do have one question though, which type of "laminectomy" did you have? ... the Traditional "cutting and grinding away" OR the newer "ultrasonic" type ???

Thank you thank you thank you! L4, L5 and S1… sitting here in pain.. neurosurgery scheduled me for an EMG on July 5!! 😡😡😡😡….. just take me to surgery already!! They have multiple MRI’s, know it’s a chronic worsening condition… but still wants an EMG.. is this normal protocol or just at the VA?? Hopefully I can get some relief soon
I didn't have an EMG
I only had an MRI and some X-rays and the surgeon had everything he needed
I’m looking at having to have something done with my back very soon. I’m curious why you went with this fusion instead of anterior fusion or disk replacement.
I didn't have fusion performed. It was a laminectomy - shaving of the bone to relieve pressure on the nerves and disks

as of two weeks ago, I have zero restrictions. I've been going to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and I'm doing a 100 mile gravel bike race next weekend. And I'm 98% pain free. The area that was opened is still a little sore but that'll go away with time - about another 6-8 weeks
How did your follow up go? Im almost a week post op L5-S1. Feeling ok.

The follow up went pretty well. I'm feeling really good at the moment. Will be filming an update hopefully tomorrow and posting Monday or Tuesday 🤞

Hello sir i am also had laminectomy last year on thisday june 21,now since one year completed but now also ihad some degree of pain numbness and burning sensation in my right leg,iam depressed sometimes iam crying,i can carry this all of my remaining life?any one could answer me, because I am in 30 and i have two little child
sorry to hear that you're having a difficult time. I can't comment on the pain you are dealing with but I have been pain free going on 6 weeks now.
