    This episode has one of the most chilling cuts I've seen in anything.
    We see the desert scene from Mike's POV. It's COMPLETELY silent. Then we cut to the ground below as the twins etc walk out of the shack and we hear the truck driver just WAILING and SCREAMING, begging for his life.
    It is wonderfully edited and it is just rough to watch. For a small part, that truck driver does a great job.

    Chuck's pettiness is so next level. Jimmy has assumed Chuck has held a grudge against him since the "Chicago Sunroof" incident, but we know he has held a grudge since the accounting of his father's business, where they attributed all the losses to Jimmy's "Sticky fingers" but we know Jimmy's father handed out money to any person with a sob story then there's the pettiness with his mother's deathbead, where he hold a grudge against Jimmy for being "selfish" in wanting to get himself and Chuck food and missing his mother's immediate death, where she called out for Jimmy and not Chuck, holding it against Jimmy for the rest of his life. Chuck might be the pettiest TV character of all time.

      @@funfunfun3624 no no no. You give Chuck waaaay too much credit. He didnt tell Jimmy cause he hated that their mother loved Jimmy more. It's as simple as that. Jimmy and Chuck are opposites. Jimmy is the personification of "the ends justify the means" phrase, a genuinely good guy that uses illegal or immoral means to achieve good things. Chuck is a selfish piece of sh1t, so sh1ty that hates his own brother for being their parents' favourite, so sh1ty that gets out of his way to make his life misserable but always goes by the book and always pretending to do it for "the right reasons" or "to make Jimmy a better person". 33:15: They most likely went with the title "Better Call Saul" because that was also the title of the Breaking Bad episode that featured the first appearance of the character Saul Goodman. That way, if one were to watch "Better Call Saul" and "Breaking Bad" in chronological order, you'd be "returning" to the world of "Better Call Saul" when Saul Goodman showed up on Breaking Bad.

Then somehow I still end up talking about Jimmy and Chuck's from-the-get-go relationship in relation to their history, and the dynamics of trust and how wonderfully webbed the story is. But for the sake of simplicity, it's easy to see how Jimmy could believe it when Kim said, "You never wanted him to succeed." Which, I don't even necessarily think was true. But it's easy to see it that way on account of the way Chuck acts. Chuck showed love differently than... well, a lot of loving people, and the sheer visceral dependence of using brother/caretaker's care as a weapon because he is rigid about the law... well it irritates a lot of people. Gosh I hate this type of relationship so much, the show runners portrayed it so well. It just feels so disgusting how much Jimmy actually loves his brother, but Chuck is just filled with the utmost resentment and disdain possible. Chuck is a complete selfish vampire that uses and abuses Jimmy for his help but refuses to see any good deed and help he gives because Chuck thinks he already ‘knows’ who Jimmy is so nothing will change his perception. Eventually you just have to let go and leave those ‘Chuck’ family members to stew in their own negative self loathing 😔🤷‍♀️

    • @quark1153
      @quark1153 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The relationship is more complicated than just "Jimmy actually loves his brother, but Chuck is just filled with the utmost resentment and disdain possible".
      We can see that already in episode 1. Jimmy is taking care of Chuck, but brotherly love might not be the only reason. He also owes Chuck for a lot from the past (as we learned later). But Chuck is also a potential instrument of Jimmy's revenge against Howard. Jimmy is pushing Chuck into cashing out of HHM. Even though it would mean liquidation and many people losing their jobs, including Kim. Also, Jimmy really should know how much HHM means for Chuck. Taking it away from him would be terrible.
      Chuck's perception of Jimmy still being prone to "slipping" is bolstered by the clues he gets in season 1 (the ER bill and the missing newspaper). So his determination to keep him out of HHM is only reinforced by Jimmy's recent activities. The shitty part is not refusing to give him the job, but lying about it and asking Howard to take the blame.
      If Jimmy actually loves Chuck, he shouldn't abuse his illness to sabotage his work and make his illness worse as a result. After that, it's hard to tell how much Jimmy cares out of love and how much out of guilty conscience. So while Jimmy keeps showing that he cares about Chuck, what he does to him kind of negates that.

    • @pencil6965
      @pencil6965 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally ignoring how jimmy will quickly backstab his brother when it serves him, gaslights tf out of everyone, and uses them to his advantage. (This isn't directed at the Blind Wave guys so much as it's directed at certain commenters here and on the Blind Wave site.) Chuck isn't the bad guy. Neither is Jimmy. It's a a complex and very morally grey situation, which is part of what makes things so interesting. I see *far* too many instances of people being _way_ too forgiving of Jimmy's crappy behaviour while making out that Chuck's crappy behaviour makes him pure evil, it simply isn't that straightforward.
    The show _heavily_ suggests that Chuck is correct about Jimmy not being able to help himself when it comes to breaking the rules/law. Even if Chuck had totally supported Jimmy and allowed him a place at HHM, do you honestly believe, with 100% certainty, that he would've become an honest, upstanding lawyer? Sure, it's not _impossible,_ but it's entirely understandable why Chuck is sceptical enough of Jimmy's character, given his reprehensible history, to not want to take the chance. Don't get me wrong, Chuck is in no way 100% in the right; his legitimate concerns about Jimmy are massively tied up with his personal envy of Jimmy's natural charm and likeability with others, _especially_ their parents, but that doesn't make Chuck _entirely_ wrong to oppose Jimmy's law career. They're _both_ supposed to be morally grey, but some people watching the show seem to fall heavily into "Protagonist-Centered Morality" and downplay Jimmy's shitty actions while exaggerating Chuck's.

      @@imetacrab Why do you think Jimmy _deserves_ a chance? He spent the majority of the first 30-odd years of his life being an amoral conman, only promising to turn things around under the direct threat of a long prison sentence. I think it's even directly stated that this wasn't the first time he'd promised to turn things around before going back to his old ways. Just try and see it from Chuck's perspective: while he may be pleased that Jimmy has seemingly stayed out of any big trouble with a steady job in the mail room, him suddenly revealing his secret intentions to work as a _lawyer,_ with all the potential for misdeeds that brings (and with a degree from an extremely questionable source I might add), I totally understand why he'd be _extremely_ sceptical about his intentions. I just don't think it's unreasonable of Chuck to not have faith in Jimmy's ability to change and be a better person when he's been given absolutely _zero_ reason to do so. Sure, _maybe_ Jimmy would've turned things around if Chuck had taken a chance on him and mentored him as a lawyer but I don't think it's at all fair to pin the blame for Jimmy's future crimes on Chuck for not supporting him; he didn't _owe_ Jimmy his support.
      Oh and, sorry to be nitpicky but I wouldn't call Chuck using Howard as a scapegoat "gaslighting", it's really just...lying, and not entirely malicious lying at that. It's definitely manipulative, to be sure, but clearly done out of a desire to preserve their friendly relationship and not hurt Jimmy's feelings by revealing his disapproval directly.
      As I said, I don't disagree about Chuck's envious, resentful attitude towards Jimmy. It's undeniable that while Chuck _claims_ his actions against Jimmy are exclusively for the good of others, it's made explicitly clear he's _definitely_ partially motivated by those not-entirely-deserved unpleasant feelings towards him. I don't think Chuck is secretly the hero or 100% a good guy or anything, I just think people are much too dismissive of the complexities of his character and motivations when they just call him an asshole villain, as if Jimmy never did _anything_ deserving of Chuck's disdain.
      I don't think Jimmy knowing he's amoral and _sometimes_ doing the right thing excuses his bad actions as much as you do. Conversely, I don't think Chuck thinking he's a better, more righteous person than he is makes him as bad as you do. I also don't agree about either show being so clear cut about rooting for protagonists over antagonists, sure, there's some instances where the lesser of two evils is really obvious (anyone named Salamanca is obviously not someone you'd root for even if they were the protagonist) but in a lot of cases I feel a lot of audience sympathies would be different if we were seeing events from someone else's POV. Gus and Chuck I think are the best examples, if the events of the story were framed from their perspectives rather than their enemies I think all the characters would be perceived a little differently. I really think a lot of this is a perspective thing.

      @@imetacrab _Second_ chances yes, fair enough, but this wasn't a case of Jimmy doing _one_ bad thing and Chuck condemning him forever for it, like I said, it was a _lifetime_ of being a duplicitous grifter. I think that's easily enough reason to be sceptical of his ability to change. To be clear, the issue with how Jimmy got his qualification wasn't that it was via distance learning, it's that the university he got it from is rather shady and suspect. I wouldn't consider Chuck hiring Jimmy or allowing him to get a job at another big law firm "neutral". Given he has very good reasons to believe Jimmy will abuse his position, hiring him could potentially be disastrous to HHM's and Chuck's own reputation. Even allowing him to work at another firm could reflect very badly on Chuck given their family connection. As I've said, I don't entirely condone Chuck's actions and I wouldn't expect others to, I just wish people would try and understand a little more _why_ he does what he does instead of treating it like he _only_ does things out of petty spite.
      I'm not sure it's possible to entirely take that quote from Kim on face value, I don't think even _Kim_ entirely believes what she's saying there; she knows she has to fight for Jimmy's side there since he'll be in a lot of trouble otherwise but she also knows he's _definitely_ guilty. I just don't think it's as simple as "the only reason Jimmy goes bad is because Chuck didn't support him when he should have so everything is Chuck's fault", as I've said, in my opinion, there was really just not enough evidence from Chuck's point of view that Jimmy could/would genuinely change for me to condemn him. I know it's easy as an audience member who's seeing things from Jimmy's perspective enough to know his attempts to change are genuine but, from Chuck's point of view, there's really no reason to believe it. Plus, as Chuck says, even _if_ Jimmy does genuinely mean well, he just doesn't think he can help himself given his history, which I don't think is _entirely_ unreasonable. Harsh certainly, but Jimmy brought it on himself by spending so many years being so duplicitous. I know people try and make out that Chuck was an asshole for wanting Jimmy to stay in the mail room for the rest of his life but I don't honestly think that's true, if Jimmy had tried to pursue a better career in literally almost _anything_ else other than lawyering I don't think Chuck would've been anywhere near as concerned, certainly not enough to try and sabotage him.

      @@imetacrab I agreed with you until you pointed to "the system".
      Both shows are about choices. Walter didn't make money early in his career because he made a choice. He chose to let Gretchen and Elliott buy him out. Likewise, he could have chosen to take their money instead of cooking meth. Walter explicitly states it more than once. He made choices and these are the consequences. Blaming "the system" removes personal responsibility.

      @@Zomdra Skepticism is fine, but maybe he shouldn't have given Jimmy the chance in first place if he truly believed he couldn't change. So regardless of whether you sympathize with Jimmy or not, you can understand his frustration and disappointment that his brother claimed to support him all that time, but really didn't. I'm pretty sure from Chuck's words it's that it was an online course, which was a shortcut somehow while he worked his butt off to get where he was. Whateved the case was, it all came down to him not liking that Jimmy was a lawyer. That's reasonable, but he never actually asked him why he wanted to be a lawyer or what it meant to him. He just left him to hang. If guiding him as a lawyer or referring him to another firm wasn't a option, then he could have simply had him consider looking at another career. Not to mention, tell him about his skepticism straight up. Instead, he let Howard, his friend and partner, take the heat. Maybe the things Chuck does isn't only out of spite, but the fact that there is obvious spite plus his inability to admit how or why his actions left Jimmy feeling betrayed make his claims about being right or supposed good intentions questionable.
      At that moment, yeah, Kim was saving face because she knew Chuck was right about what Jimmy did, but words still had some truth to them. You're right. It's not that simple. Jimmy is responsible for his own decisions and should be held accountable to them. But Chuck should be held accountable to his as well, but as we'll see, he may not fully believe that. Unfortunately, while this might be somewhat hypocritical for an audience member to say, Chuck's point of view is very bias against Jimmy. The guy worked as a law abiding citizen to 10 years and that wasn't enough. Chances are nothing he did was ever going to be enough. Perhaps it's not unreasonable I'll admit. Maybe, but again, if Jimmy was such a lost cause, why give him the chance to turn it all around if he never believed he would? Why keep him around? Maybe it's not true, but considering he didn't help him get a job as a lawyer or even guide him to another career, it kind of seems true. At that point, his options were to stay in the mailroom or take his chances as a solo lawyer which was extremely unlikely to work.
