Listen all you liverpool fans. I'm from the same town in Denmark, as Jan, Kolding. I went with my father and saw him play for Kolding around 1980, when he was 17 or 18. I have never since seen anyone hammer the ball from the midfield to the upper left corner of the goal without inlet. For a moment the goal keeper was just as much a spectator as I was.
I remember the Molby stroll too. He used to play like someone's dad who had joined a kids park game and was playing in his slippers. I can't get over his turn of pace. Perhaps he saved up all the sprinting capacity in his life for that one moment.
I saw Jan Molby play for Swansea against my team Wigan Athletic at Springfield Park in Division 3 in the mid-90s. His passing was incredible, but so was his...erm...paunch. Great player and a great experience to watch him play, even at the tail-end of his career.
class player. naturally two footed. learned from cruyff. I don't know much about liverpool other than if you don't perform day in and day out those scousers don't speak well of you. they love him. class player and class person.
What a run. He chased the ball down relentlessly as well. Barcelona style, all the way until the goal. The goal was Liverpool style. With vigor and intent.
I was at that game - standing in the Kop and I'm surprised nobody's mentioned (I haven't read right back) that "That Goal" was the equaliser when time was running out and it was looking bad for Liverpool - United in control BUT about 2 minutes after "that goal", Liverpool got a penalty and up stepped big Jan to score that as well! If we were buzzing after "that goal", imagine the scenes when that penalty went in. Can we see the penalty, please? Or do we have to wait another 24 years for that?
Back in the days the players took care of security them selves.. and the fans apparently respected that. Look at how quick he ran away after joining the celebration
The sound is from the live radio commentary hence the excitement. He even says he went past three players ie he is painting a picture for the radio listener.
I remember listening to this on the radio at the time. I think it was Alan Green doing the commentating even back then. Took me years to finally see this wonder goal due to the camera dispute in showing games that season.
It was not videoed by United staff. The game was a live feed to Danish t.v. and the commentary is overdubbed from the Radio City commentary. Gary Bloom iirc.
but I still don't get it :-( If it was United's staff who videoed the game (which is incidently the explanation Jan himself gives in his autobiography) then where did the comentary come from?
That makes sense, except it seems too 'natural' if you know what I mean. The guy commentating seems genuinly excited by the action, which he wouldn't have been if he had already known what was going to happen.
There's no denying it was a determined run and good finish. But let's face it, he was hardly challenged and there have been vast amounts of goals scored featuring superior skills.
yer right mate was gonna post your post word for word, best 3 mins at anfield for me , total ectasy on the kop @15 year old i didnt see the goals it was packed that night, buzzing seeing it for the first time!, would love to see the next 3mins... jft96
Because there was no TV coverage at the time due to a strike by cameramen. The footage was supposed to have been lost, so the only ones to see it were those at the match
MidlandNinja No this was a 4th Round League Cup Tie, which took place in November 1985(1985-86 season). Although Liverpool went down 0-1 to an early Paul McGrath goal, Jan Molby scored twice in the second half to secure a 2-1 win for Liverpool. Liverpool would go on to the semi finals of that competition, but they lost 2-3 on aggregate to QPR
@knuddle68 Listen to the crowd noise, then listen to him. I cant explain it, but its definitely different. Its like the crowd has kind of background "noise", but the commentary is crystal clear. BTW natural sounding commentary is normal. A lot of highlights programs like MOTD have commentary thats added later but its sounds natural.
It is a very good goal though not as amazing as the legend suggested. He was a joy to watch, probably the 2nd best midfielder of that type behind Glenn Hoddle who was the only superior two-footed passer and ballstriker. Back to the goal - a powerful strike from a great ball-striker, though not in the top corner. And it was more a case of carrying the ball forward up the park more than a dribble, though still no mean feat for a fat lad. Well done, Jan.
Yeah but... Didn't Riise do it against Chelsea? You know, the most solid team int he world at the time? I appreciate what people are saying - yeah. Rubbish defending, keeper's reactions were a bit.. off. But wasn't that like of Riise's goal?
What the hell were Man U doing, the defenders just getting backing up from him, where the fuck was the challenge?!! Nicely done though Mr Molby, he saw an opening and absolutely destroyed it. Bravo
great goal, but not worth all this hype it's been getting. i'm an arsenal fan and i'd say Giggs' goal against us in the FA Cup is better, Henry's gaol against Spurs when he ran the length of the pitch and then curled it in is better.
@kobadelhi yeah that's fair enough fitness is important, but it's not the most important part of the game, that's what I meant. And yes, I've played some 'proper' football :)
Am I watching the wrong video? I mean, most of the goalies nowadays would save that, it was going almost in to the middle of the goal... by the way I'm a Liverpool fan, just saying there are many greater goals
An era where anyone could pull this off? Have you ever played football? No matter what the era that is a cracking goal. And I'm sure United fans that watched players such as George Best and Bobby Charlton would agree with you that they were only made to look good because footballers of the day were rubbish. Comments like yours are why United have never been liked as Champions no matter how good their football - sheer bloody arrogance mixed with a total lack of respect for your opponents.
Fantastic to see it after all these years.
You'll Never Walk Alone
Jan is one of us now and he will never walk alone we love you kidd ⚽️🥇⚽️
One of the 10 greatest ever LFC players. Big Jan was superb. Apparently we have waited 24 years to see this goal....well worth it !
Listen all you liverpool fans. I'm from the same town in Denmark, as Jan, Kolding. I went with my father and saw him play for Kolding around 1980, when he was 17 or 18. Pardon my english. For clarification: he stood in the center circle
Søren Lerby : hold my beer..
Molby was an under=rated player by many pundits..though he remains one of our best ever...
There's no bigger game than Liverpool vs Man U. Molby is a legend.
I remember the Molby stroll too. He used to play like someone's dad who had joined a kids park game and was playing in his slippers.
I can't get over his turn of pace. Perhaps he saved up all the sprinting capacity in his life for that one moment.
That's Jan all over lad he didn't have to run much his passing was that good
I was born the day this goal was scored (26th November 1985)... as a Liverpool fan, you couldn't ask for a better one! :)
Truly great goal from Jan. We've been waiting for footage of this one to appear for years! Look at the Kop when it goes in - those were the days
YNWA
Meet him earlier on in the year at a charity event..... legend
I saw Jan Molby play for Swansea against my team Wigan Athletic at Springfield Park in Division 3 in the mid-90s.
His passing was incredible, but so was his...erm...paunch.
Great player and a great experience to watch him play, even at the tail-end of his career.
Goosebumps EVERY TIME
molby will always be a legend
beautiful goal. I'm a United fan but you've gotta admire, and bemoan a goal like that.
This goal deffo makes my top 5 Liverpool strikes of all time. Fucking Insane. Jan Molby at his sublime best.
Met him at the Anfield legends tour back in August, he is such a genuine nice guy and I loved hearing his stories about when he played
That gave me goosebumps. I love Liverpool
Awesome Goal Janbo ! ⚽️
Jan Molby....Kiddy Harriers finest! Great goal! Great character
class player. naturally two footed. learned from cruyff. I don't know much about liverpool other than if you don't perform day in and day out those scousers don't speak well of you. they love him. class player and class person.
Legend!
true legend
Brilliant goal
classic goal by a great dane
The sound is from the live radio commentary of the game. The cameramans strike did not affect radio broadcasts.
What a run. He chased the ball down relentlessly as well. Barcelona style, all the way until the goal. The goal was Liverpool style. With vigor and intent.
I love how the Kop looked in those days, it's like a sea of people.
Look up hillsborough... ended badly.
R.i.p
Liverpool legendary football club!
so quick and such good ball control... amazing goal
Lovely lovely lovely goal. Just...lovely.
The sound is from the live radio commentary hence the excitement. He even says he went past three players ie he is painting a picture for the radio listener.

What A "Belter" By Jan Molby...."As John Motson Would Say" Big Jan The Man!
I love Jan Molby, he's the living proof that fitness means nothing. He had the skill, he was damn brilliant.
Shiiiiiiiitt that was a longer dribbling than Maradona and Messi! and a better goal!
but I still don't get it :-( If it was United's staff who videoed the game (which is incidently the explanation Jan himself gives in his autobiography) then where did the comentary come from?
That makes sense, except it seems too 'natural' if you know what I mean. The guy commentating seems genuinly excited by the action, which he wouldn't have been if he had already known what was going to happen.

ok deh.
How about the rest of this game? Is there any footage floating about of United's goal or our, supposedly, dodgy pen?
What a goal!!
spent the day with him at a five a side day at Anfield. Blooody Gentleman.
Looking very slim in fairness to him
Just had an evening with jan at a club in Cleethorpes. Top guy!
Jan should've never have gotten this tape out.
The goal was legendary because of the mystic about it, that's all gone now.
Keeper was Gary Bailey - Even he said in an interview after the game that he got his fingers to Molby's shot and it nearly took his fingers off!
He was more a scouser than anyone else in the team, just listen to his interviews of the time.
i don't know if you noticed but he run for the 10-15 meters to steal the ball than he did what he did...
my compliments...
proud to be croat
yer right mate was gonna post your post word for word, best 3 mins at anfield for me , total ectasy on the kop @15 year old i didnt see the goals it was packed that night, buzzing seeing it for the first time!, would love to see the next 3mins... jft96
Molby what a player
Anyone know who was "keeping" for United that day?
instigatordj001 Yes Gary Bailey was the Man.Utd. keeper in that game
Because there was no TV coverage at the time due to a strike by cameramen. The footage was supposed to have been lost, so the only ones to see it were those at the match
that's a pretty awesome goal but i guess nothing lives up to the legend.
how dence is that crowd
THE BIG MAN!
Great strike and goal. Suprised he managed it with his weight, he was prob slim that time though.
Awesome commentary
Awesomeage ! a goal to remember for us Liverpudlians ! Haters to the Left !
Shoulders back and smashed it!
link on the guardian newspaper website
You might've missed the point.
The tape has been in Jan Molby's loft all this time.
Was this the game in April 1988 where Liverpool led 3-1 at half time but it ended a 3-3 draw?
MidlandNinja No this was a 4th Round League Cup Tie, which took place in November 1985(1985-86 season).

very nice goal
The game was 26th November 1985 (1985/86 season), in the League Cup. Liverpool won 2-1 and I went to the game.
andymassey1963 Jan Molby scored twice in this game (55 mins;57 mins pen.),after Paul McGrath scored an early goal for Man.Utd.
Maradona and messi don't press the first man then tackle the second man in their own half then beat 3 and rifle it
Gary Bailey I think
@knuddle68 Listen to the crowd noise, then listen to him. I cant explain it, but its definitely different. Its like the crowd has kind of background "noise", but the commentary is crystal clear. Nice finish, but he wasn't exactly put under any pressure while he waltzed his way to goal.
Why can't people just admire the quality of the goal without having to resort to inane, juvenile comments?
seen jan about 2 hours ago in the petrol station at chesire oaks
why have you got a user name going on about EFC?? Im only bitter towards clubs that win things and thesedays YOU DONT QUALIFY!
october 1985 , when Liverpool were a big club
Jan Molby running?! I thought this never even happened prior to today.

I support charlton but that is probably the best goal I have ever seen. And against the worst team ever (man utd) :)
who do we think Gerrard's been modelling himself on eh?
Rambo, Rambo, Rambo, Rambo, Rambo, Rambo, Rambo, Rambo
@knuddle68 Commentary was added later.

his my grandcousine. what a legend!!!!!!
Reminds me of Torres last season. Defenders just looking silly.
whopper of a goal
I'm a chelsea fan but anything that good against man u is worth watching at least 20 times :L lmao
Get IN THERE!
What the hell were Man U doing, the defenders just getting backing up from him, where the fuck was the challenge?!!
Nicely done though Mr Molby, he saw an opening and absolutely destroyed it. Bravo
he chase the ball win it and run to penalty area n score wow
great goal, but not worth all this hype it's been getting.

amaizing
I would like to discuss with you some business opportunities.
Yeah. You can see time's exaggerated the goasal, but fuck it - hats off, I mean Riise did it vs. Chelsea and they had a mint defense!
Am I watching the wrong video? I mean, most of the goalies nowadays would save that, it was going almost in to the middle of the goal... by the way I'm a Liverpool fan, just saying there are many greater goals
Fucking respect him it’s one of the best goals scored for Liverpool. Probably from Iran or something you
In United's shadow? Who just lost 2-0?
jan the man
An era where anyone could pull this off? Have you ever played football? No matter what the era that is a cracking goal. That was a scorcher.
i can't understand why LIVERFOOL fans have always rated this goal very high....wat an average goal....
@pme96 That would make sense.
