The video was filmed using hidden cameras in the street. Stromae is amazing. I highly recommend Papaoutai by him. Title means Dad, where are you.

Actually, just to clear a little more the context: the video was made in the times he was well, way before he took the break.
The story behind was that they have made already two amazing clips and he became quite famous, when some random guy filmed him while eating a fast food in his car in Bruxelles. Stromae realized that this nonsense video made a bigger buzz than his new clip for "Tous les mêmes" and found a way to play with the attention the media is giving to those viral videos of stars.
He showed up on a busy tram stop in the morning playing drunk while several hidden cameras filmed the scene. In just a day all the paparazzi and media were crazy about him going down, drinking and not caring for himself.
He got invited to a TV show later on and played that role so authentically that you would really believe that he is drunk and depressive.
Helas it was just amazing acting. And geniously planned marketing strategy: "so this is what you want? You want to see me casual, dirty of ketchup, angry, annoyed? You will have it! But on my rules"
I love Stromae and his music. I also admire how he was able to take care of himself when the career of popstar became too much. He always stayed close with his family and friends and keeps working unically with the people he choses, very independent in taking decisions.
Thanks for the video, I enjoyed to see how he made you believe he was really unwell and doubting if video was directed or not. It means it worked 😁👍🏻

    Thanks heaps for this!!!
A few weeks before this video came out, it made the news Stromae had been spotted obviously drunk in Bruxelles and it sparked all kinds of rumours to the point that the label came out and admitted it was all for his next video. As I said, everything he does is planned to perfection and layered. He was truly missed these last years and I am so effing proud he is right back were he left off.

In one of his interviews, Stromae explained his idea for the music video. He had relatively little time to make it, so he decided to do something completely different. He wanted to perform a social experiment where he would pretend to be drunk and in a bad state to test the reactions of passersby. The whole thing was fully improvised, starting with the lady who was worried about him and helped him stand up, and ending with a conversation with the police. Of course, this does not change the fact that the vast majority of people recognized him and took pictures of him from hiding (instead of helping him).
    Great reaction!

    • @morganeb2318
      @morganeb2318 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

He said that the police came twice. First because they were worried. Seconde because they saw he didn't get better. SO at the second time Stromae had to tell them he was faking and filming.
And for the idea, it came after a video of him eating tabbouleh in his car. Few guy talked to him, distirbe him, well they were not so respectful. And he thought "they want blood ? Let's give them blood". Like they want me to entertain them ? Let's do it ! And damn this video was perfect for it :)

Stromae worked non stop night and day for 7 years, writing music, touring and giving interviews.
For his second album "Racine Carrée'" (Formidable is on this album) he did over 200 performances worldwide. On the African leg of the tour he was given an antimalarial drug called Lariam as a precaution. However, it caused devastating side effects including severe depression, anxiety, hallucinations and suicidal thoughts. So in addition to being burned out and exhausted he had the side effects of this drug too. His brother Luc realized something was terribly wrong and flew him back to Brussels for treatment. The rest of his tour was postponed.
This video was filmed with hidden cameras in a square in Brussels. Noone knew he was shooting the video. This is long before he had burn out and the Lariam side effects. It's Stromae's incredible acting that you are witnessing here. "Formidable" means wonderful in French. "Forminable"means pathetic.
He was in great shape when he made this video. The length of the break they talk about was the amount of time between the release of his albums: Racine Carrée came out in 2013 but he toured it until the end if 2015. Multitude came out on October 15 2021. He was performing concerts for two years until the end of 2015. At the end of the Racine Carrée tour he got married in December 2015. They had a son in 2018. He, his wife and his younger brother Luc have a clothing and housewares design company. He had always planned on taking a break after the Racine Carrée tour as he had other projects he wanted to work on. He collaborated with other artists (eg French rapper, Orelsan, on "La Pluie", Chris Martin and Coldplay, co writing the song "Arabesque" with Chris Martin and Fela Kuti (see the Sunrise performance from Jordan on TH-cam which was broadcast live during the pandemic). Stromae (whose real name is Paul Van Haver) is also a cinematographer and worked on a video with Billy Eilish among others. His piece called "Merci" played at the end of each "Racine Carrée" concert, which is an instrumental, was used for the film Mockingjay part 2 in the Hunger Games trilogy. Words were written and other artists performed the piece for the film.
When Stromae (Verlan for Maestro, a French slang that reverses syllables) started out he wrote music in his bedroom using a keyboard, drums and a computer program. He invented a novel way to present his work on TH-cam and called them "Les Leçons". These Leçons were brilliant. He worked at a radio station and performed his Leçons at various cafés in small locations in Brussels. One day a friend at the radio station played his song "Alors On Danse" (that was his Leçons no 8). He became a superstar in the French speaking world and beyond overnight. That song also became the anthem for the Belgian football team (soccer to Americans). I highly recommend watching Stromae's Leçons as well as the 1 hour, 57 minutes of perfection that is his Racine Carrée concert in Montreal 2015 filmed professionally at the time. It's on TH-cam free of charge. It's changed a bit since i first watched the raw footage as his brother Luc has added subtitles and done some editing. I preferred the original as now some parts have been edited out and it is the poorer för it. For example, Stromae changes clothes for several songs. One time he changes his socks and footwear on stage as he banters with his audience. It's important as you see how charismatic he is with his audience and ioved how he structured the change of clothes into the concert. It's a small point and I only noticed the difference because I've watched that film so many times since it came out so I know it by heart.
Stromae is not a rapper now. He tried it first, in his teens, but he's more musical than that. So he actually invented his own genre. He is fascinating, a real genius, and a humble, genuine person. This video of "Formidable" was a risk for him at the time as he was by then, after the success of Cheese, his first album, a megastar.
I highly recommend watching a TV interview he did for Tous Les Mêmes. It's just genius. The song, the concept, everything. Here is the link to this fantastic interview. If you don't know the song and haven't seen the video you won't understand that these two people are both Stromae. In his concerts or the video för this song he plays both the male and the female parts by turning his body. One side is female and the lighting is pink and the other side is male and the lighting turns green. It's about a couple who have the same argument every month. It's a breakdown of a relationship. So in this interview they've cleverly used cinematography to have him there as two separate people. I was blown away by it when i first saw this.

Hello, great react video. For your information there are many words in French and English that are the same but can mean different things (we call them "false-friends"). Formidable is one of them.
Formidable in French can mean "Formidable", "extraordinary" or "wonderful".
In this context he is saying "Wonderful" which is ironic for his situation.

You will love Stromae. He is a genius. Each song, every lyric has a deep meaning. He will have a performance according the lyrics he want to present. I can't even say which song is my favorite, they are all so good. You understand by now that I am very happy that he is back :)

Hey, great that you are listening to some of Stromae´s music! You already noticed his astonishing vocals and impressive instrumentals. Eventhough his music is referred to as "rap" oder at least some kind of rap I think that he´s much more than a rapper. He really is truly an artist, a singer, just a great musician with so much emotions.
And yes, this video was filmed undercover. So of course all the people you see in the video know him and wondering what he´s doing, but they did not know in particular, that he was shooting a video there.
I´m glad that you are open to all these recommendations from the community.
Whishing you all the best for the future! Greetings from Germany. :)

I'm so glad you're reacting to more of Stromae's music :) I respect him for not only entertaining but also making people think - all that while staying humble. I guess that's what true artists do. I remember once I read an interview with the director of this music video. His name is Jérôme Guiot and he said "Formidable" was supposed to be a social experiment, but sadly, as you could see, people who recognized Stromae mostly ignored/recorded him instead of helping a "drunk" man.

This was made with hidden cameras. People really thought he was going through a hard time and really thought he was drunk when he was in fact faking it for the music video. People genuinely wanted to help him and talk to him to know if he was ok. Since the beginning of his career, Stromae has been a marketing genius. I know all that because I am from Belgium just like him.

You don't know how it is in Belgium I guess. We don't do celebrities like we do in the US. At the time he did this many people recognized him but people leave even celebrities alone and those who recognized him thought he was just pissed. By that time it had been a long time since his first album. It was definetly hidden camera filmed. I know it's hard to compute for most Americans but that's how it works here ;).

Since last year my french has gotten a lot better and now I listen to all kinds of Frnech music. I know you have the lyrics underneath but the words he uses sound even more powerfull in French.
I love the Stromae videos! Keep em coming❤️

I understand it's hard to give the best analysis when it's your first reaction to the song, and this song is very complex, so I don't blame you for this, but this song deserves a better breakdown.
    Something like:
    "Formidable, formidable
you were formidable, I was so pathetic
we were so formidable" - Despite seeing himself as someone who was too pathetic to keep his girlfriend around, he still believed they were formidable. Almost as either he was that much better with her around, or she was so formidable she could be it for the both of them.
"Hey, baby, oops, Mademoiselle" - He's now talking to this new girl and he corrects himself to avoid sounding like he's being creepy.
"I'm not hitting on you, I promise, I swear" - Only adds to the point.
"I'm single since yesterday, fuck it,
    I can't have a baby but well, it's not-
Hey, come back" - He's just venting to her at this point, almost as if part of him clings on to this hope he'll find the love of his life again, the woman who listens to him. But he interupts himself because she's leaving out of being creeped out or at least uncomfortable because he looks, and at this point is unhealthy. Because of that, she doesn't feel like being just a damage fixer, which seems to be the role he's assigning to her.
"Just 5 minutes, what? I haven't insulted you.
I'm polite, courteous, and very quite a bit hammered" - He's pleading for her time, so he can prove he's not just a drunk man looking miserable. That's why he says these nice things about himself while admitting he's drunk, to almost "excuse" why he looks so poorly at that moment.
"But talking to guys like me? You have better things to do, right?
You should have seen me yesterday
when I was formidable" - Here you, Tom, pointed out most of what needed saying, but he makes it sound like he was utterly perfect the day before, because of how good his relationship seemed to be. But he seems to be judging her "superficiality" over abandoning him as he's venting to her, almost as he's saying: "I look too pathetic and weak to you, right?"
"Oh, look at you, you think you're handsome
    because you got married.
But it's just a ring, dude, don't get carried away,
she's gonna dump you like they always do." - You've also pointed out everything here. I'll only add he seemed to have tried his hardest to portray the very negative and toxic worldview that being dumped can give you. You were at the pinnacle of your happiness, and all of a sudden, it's all stolen from you. That's why he says "don't get carried away", "don't take your happiness for granted, you'll lose it in a second".
"And then, the other girl, did you mention her?
If you want, I can tell your wife,
and then to the kid, if you actually have any." - He's saying "have you mentioned this thing that will most likely pull her away from you? Because I know how all these nice things you have will fall apart in a second if you do, and you also do, don't you?"
"Wait 3 years, 7 years, and we'll see
if it's still formidable" - Let's see how long this falsehood lasts, because it will surely not last forever.
"Hey, little girl! Oh, sorry, little boy" - My view here is vey "mine", but I'd say his mistake when looking at a kid happened because he's seeing his ex-lover's face so much even a boy "looks like a girl".
"You know in life, there's no bad guy, no good guy." - This could be seen as him aknowledging all of us have good and evil inside, but I think this is darker because of the examples he gives later.
"If mommy is a pain, it's because she's afraid of being a granny
If daddy cheats on mommy, it's because she's old" - This is what I mean. It sounds like he's just exposing people. "Mom's afraid of getting old", so she's a pain, because she's already afraid of being cheated on or abandoned, and funny enough, "daddy" is already cheating and using that as an excuse. Both are doing something wrong with "something" behind it, even though this is obviously very simplistic and cheating is much worse than "being a pain". But because he's saying these things to a child as if he's revealing the truth to him, that's why I see this as very dark and toxic.
"Why are you all red? Come back here, kid?" - "Why are you running away from the sad truth, huh?" He's emulating this drunk frustration of the person who's completely done at this point. Being in this state, everything comes out unfiltered and negative.
"And what's wrong with you all, looking at me like I'm a monkey,
ah, right, you're a bunch of saints, bunch of monkeys" - At this point, since his world has fallen apart completely in one day, he just feels that the whole world is fake, and that's why after saying what he said, getting these negative reactions makes him feel he's right. He "revealed the secrets" and now people are mad.
"Give me a baby monkey, he'll be formidable" - After mentioning the word "monkey" as a negative, he's almost promising he'll make a monkey baby become much better than the rest of the "monkey" world, which only adds to his frustration at the whole world. "You're all liars and fake, so I'll make this baby be much better than all of you".
Sorry for the long text, but yeah, aside from this, this video only adds to how helpful all your videos have been to all of us watching. So I still appreciate them a lot.

This is information adapted from the information shared by someone else's post on another video.
From what I understand, this entire video was staged. It was made at a time when Stromae really grew in popularity before the release of his new album where "Formidable" was released. Essentially, despite his newfound fame and fortune at the time, he still drove an old beat-up car. (Not because he couldn't afford a more expensive one- he simply didn't feel the need to). Essentially, one day, some guy found him in his car, alone, eating a burger and filmed him, insulting him, and berating him for being so famous and yet looking so... "poor"(?). After that, the person posted the video on social media, where the internet did what the internet does best; they made fun of him and articles based on pure speculation came out, about how this "famous" and "grand artist" was apparently only a one-time success, was dirt poor, and living in his car.
As a result of that, you can imagine that Stromae was devastated. Therefore, he decided to play a little prank for people and play in their hands; he gave them what they wanted to see and believe. He put up this whole performance way before his new single "Formidable" and album came out. Later, to further give them the impression that this was all real, he also showed up drunk purposefully on TV and gave a performance like that. It was only later that people realized that this was all part of an elaborate plan to show really that "appearances aren't really"; that, he can be a popular artist and still maintain a normal mode of living as opposed to a frugal one.
I would like to again mention that this post and the information were not initially written by me. It was written by another user called "
Minotaur" (For reference and credit), on another youtube video reacting to "Stromae - Formidable". I simply found this backstory so interesting that I decided to transcribe it here for people to know. Hopefully, I did a good job at it.

So formidable is a synonym of amazing(magnificent,marvelous...) ,fort minable would be "a big loser", he basically talks to an ex who left him, he his heart broken and is acting drunk, just a good actor, he basically tells how she was amazing and he was a loser and now he lost her, comment if you want more translated the way he means it instead of how google does it

Found your channel today because of Eminem, stayed for Stromae! Bough tickets to see Stromae next year and honestly so excited 🙌 the way he conceptualises songs and topics are really something else.
I'd love to hear you react to his song 'Tous les Mêmes' (with video). I think all of Stromae's pieces are strong, but L'enfer and
Tous les Mêmes are my favourites.
If you'd rather switch to another artist first, I'd recommend 'Kim' from Eminem. It's a song fans often use to vet new reaction channels because it is so out there - but that honestly is not my intention.
I've studied Psychology in Uni and I'm really intrigued about what you would think about the track. Mainly because you've been so good in grasping Eminem's personality in his other tracks (like picking out that he really seems like a good father despite him saying he's not, or about how he's unlikely to tell Hailie to stop crying and 'stiffen her upper lip' when you reacted to Mocking Bird). So because 'Kim' is so out there and often thought to be offensive especially by those not knowing the story behind it, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it!

He's The Greatest! - "Je suis un big fan de toi" says the officer and so am I.
This video was made in the early stages of his career. His smash hit "Alors on danse" became the official song of the Belgian football team during the FIFA World Cup 2014. Everyone knew the song, few knew the face behind it.
If you watch carefully it's only some young folks who are aware what's going on as they secretly film the scene with their phones. In fact the whole scenes have been filmed with hidden cameras.
The song is from his first album "Cheese". His second album "racine carée" - square root - propelled him right into world stardom athmosphere. Notable exception: the US&UK - sorry for mentioning...
In 2016 during his worlwide touring he suffered a major mental breakdown and had to pause for several years. It's probably no coincident that this happened in Africa. His dad was Rwandan and died in the Rwandan Genocide. Just listen to "Papaoutai?".
His story had quite an impact on myself and it left me saddened. Imagine my joy when he re-emerged with his third album Multitude in 2022. He refined his style even further and I struggled a bit initially but then it took off and honestly is still on the rise. Everytime I listen to it I discover new aspects. This stuff is huge!
L'enfer, Hell, is a dialogue with his state of mind.
And it's nice to see the US finally catching up! - Obviously a "haste makes waste" thing... ;)

and a fun fact. Those police officers really believed he was drunk at the time of filming.
formidable can be pronounced in 2 ways and that's basically the whole meaning of the video.
'formidable' meaning amazing and 'fort minable' meaning miserable
Once you start going over his lyrics, you'll find a lot of these "puns" in his lyrics. For me that's what makes him so relatable.

To give some more context, a few months before this song came out he had a break up with the at the time miss belgium. When he was on tour in south africa he got infected with a flesh eating bacteria, wich is also involved in the 8 year break.

I would like to hear your perspective on Ayreon's album "The Human Equation". It's about someone ending up in a coma after an accident, being locked inside his mind with his emotions, while the ones near and dear to him are by his bedside trying to deal with the situation.
In many stages and struggles of my life it has provided perspective, support, comfort and catharsis.

It's formidable. Means wonderful. Not formidable as in difficult. French language is... Wonderful. This is shot with candid cameras. Those ppl have no idea they're being filmed. I heard he had enough of ppl gossiping about his depression. So hes acting to shock them and conn them. Ohhh.. Its stromae again, being messed up and depressed. But he has his act together.

I just found your video and I think I should give you the context behind it.
As you already understood, it was a social experiment/prank but there's a reason behind it.
If you've already watched Stromae's other music videos, you saw that he's more used to do elaborate music videos.
The thing is that one day, a douchebag recognized Stromae when he was eating in his car in a parking. The man was filming him and really was oppressive and agressive towards him, leaving him no intimacy.
At the time, this video did a huge buzz and Stromae was upset that medias talked so much about it (more than his music videos) so he decided to "prank" them with Formidable's music video

Think the video is just a normal trip home from a long night of drinking, where he did not have any luck fining a new girl (likely self sabotage, he is not over the last girl yet), he stayed till they closed, so have to go home as others are going to work 6-9 in the morning.
Of course all fake apart from the people going to work/school, he is a one man flash mob with his earbuds playing the beat/or full song. And hidden camaras.

You don't need to put a text mask on Stromae's videos. I've never heard someone saying he had a copyright strike on a Stromae reaction video. He even uploaded all the songs from his new album on TH-cam with free access, there's is also a full concert (Racine Carrée - Montréal) available.
This video was shot way before his breakdown that happened during his world tour : he suffered from a quite rare (1/10000) side effect from a malaria preventive drug (Lariam/Mefloquine) that induced a very strong depression. Its effects can last more than a decade, with relapse episodes. He took this drug because he toured in Rwanda (his father's country). That's also why he also made a song about this condition, L'Enfer (Hell), but since you already reacted to this one you're already aware of it.
Bon voyage inside the Stromae rabbit hole!
