Indeed, all we know about their fate is that they suffered heart attacks as soon as the ground suddenly collapsed from beneath them.

This run was hype af. One of the gems this year in a very mediocre marathon overall imo.
Eh, I think it's always a mixed bag by the nature of it being a bunch of different runners and games. I don't know if any year is much better than others, but more that certain runs are better than others.

Why does the midway point trigger becoming a larger Mario in TASbot, but not during Poobears run?
TASbot has total control of the game. After he does the mole portion, he can spawn anything he wants. He could have programmed in flappy bird. Its really crazy what you can do with SMW
It does make it look like there are differences between the ROMs though

With TAS, you can start a series of glitches that end with you being able to rewrite the game's code using all four multitabbed controllers. The part after Luigi appearing was just a nicely crafted slideshow.

How does one get involved in this type of thing?
Depends. Some people get into it through events like this or RPG Limit Break; some naturally get into speedrunning their favorite games, some find sites like speedrun.com. If you're talking about getting into GDQ itself, registrations for potential games/runners/volunteers start up a few months beforehand.
How did the tasbot change credits? Great run!
masterjun has an article commenting on what he did, but basically he changed the credits by rewriting them real-time once they spawned, as they were still offscreen.

The level of skill to beat this at all is incredible... to be able to consistently beat it this fast is absolutely insane.
I understand how this Game exists. I have no idea why it exists. I would have thought, for sure, Mario Maker would have been the death of Rom hacks o.0. Great Run Poo. Keep being a runner for the people; by the people.
ROM hacks > Mario Maker... much more freedom and creativity with a ROM hack. I love them both though.
Either way, it actually seemed to kickstart the ROM hack community a little, bringing more people into it.

The most sad thing about Mario Maker is the eventuality that servers will go down and all levels will be lost forever. They will just be TH-cam videos at some point.
That's one reason I love ROM hacks, they will be playable 100 years from now.

It's a ROM hack of Super Mario World based on some levels that PangaeaPanga also did on Mario Maker. They use a flash cart to play the hack on a real SNES, though.
ROM Hacks are basically modifications to the coding of a game that override portions of the original in order to do all kinds of things like simple cheats, translations to other languages, new levels, new content, just about anything really.
They hack the original Super Mario World ROM to be able to do that.
This is either run on an emulator or on a SNES.
Go take a look at Lunar Magic if you are interested in making these, it's an editor for Super Mario World ROMs. It's SUPER easy to start making a SMW ROM Hack and the community for it is huge. It's one of, if not the biggest, ROM hacking communities dating back 15+ years and is so popular it is the reason Mario Maker exists.

Which is a lot harder than it sounds, since the location you start getting a lot of koroks is nowhere near where they're marked on the map...
