Chaplin had been playing this character of the Little Tramp since the 1910s. He knew that the advent of sound in movies was going to kill the Tramp. He made Modern Times in the sound era, but it was still mostly silent, and the Tramp never spoke. When he made The Great Dictator, he saw the evil in a man who was born just a week apart from himself, who had the same mustache that he'd made a beloved symbol of the Tramp, and he knew that if he was going to 'kill off' the Tramp, by allowing him to speak, by breaking the pantomime that made him the world's very first international movie star, then the Tramp had to 'die' saying something he believed in. In a way, The Great Dictator was a memorial for the Little Tramp, and a funeral notice for Adolf Hitler. This movie, this subject, and this speech were so important to Chaplin, he sacrificed his beloved Little Tramp persona, in order to make it.

This comment reminded me of a part of a paper I wrote as a student. For what it's worth it sharing it here:
There is only a thin veil between the fictitious world of Tomainia, Osterlich and Bacteria and contemporary reality in The Great Dictator. The story’s satirical nature thus prompts the question: who is performing this oration?
First, there is Chaplin who speaks as an actor-director, making a political film and as such also a political oration. His logical counterpart is the Jewish barber who tries to bring a lost nation back to the right path.
However, is there also a third speaker? Some critics of the speech have claimed that Chaplin / the Jewish barber is out of character (Kamin, 2004, p. 9). One has to admit that the passionate oration does not seem to fit with the calm, reserved, and somewhat clumsy nature of the Jewish barber. Moreover, in the speech he refers to the Gospel According to Luke despite his Jewish background. One could say that there is a third speaker who transcends both Chaplin and the Jewish barber. This third character remains part of the story of The Great Dictator, but again transcends the particularity of the Jewish barber. Like the Tramp, the third speaker represents the universal. It is the reasoned voice of the universal whereas the Tramp was its mute body.

As a veteran, I always tear up a little listening to this speech. Our service members in America are treated awfully. They are all viewed as a resource towards the greedy ambitions of powerful politicians who will do everything they can to keep their stranglehold on our country. All of the good, thoughtful leaders leave or are forced out of the service while the ones who overwork their subordinates and shift all of the blame down on them whenever anything goes wrong are the ones who get recognized and promoted, reinforcing the idea that the only way to succeed is to use your fellows as tools. This is why it is a horrible cycle that will never be broken. I truly wish for a day when the cooperation and brotherhood the military constantly boasts about are its true values, but I don't think it will ever happen.

They have such innate wisdom in their observations! I love seeing things I thought I knew about through their eyes and experience. I learn from them!
This performance by Chaplin is a masterpiece, and quite different from his lighthearted comedy that brought fans to the theaters in droves.
I never thought about Charlie Chaplin and Mr. Bean having similar comedic styles, but Muharam is spot on about that. It's their characters' (Mr. Bean and The Little Tramp) childlike innocence that somehow reveals the most ridiculous parts of human nature, but in a way that isn't preachy and overbearing. We can recognise our own foibles in their silliness and laugh at ourselves, seeing that we all make mistakes, but can change if we want to.

I believe Charlie Chaplin has read lots of philosophy, because his speech seems to be schooled in that, aside from modern humanist discourse of his time or rather before that period of time (but again right after it). I also notice it in contrast to today, because it's different from how people argue today (with their vagueness, tricks, misdirections, and lack of logic and consistency), although it's very basic and old schooling.
[And while it's "old", it always was sophisticated and progressive in its time, starting thousands of years ago... Of course with refinement over time. But that is the nature of it.]

My dad fled from the East Germany Regime to west Germany and when we wanted to visit my grandparents we need to fill out so many forms and documents.. The East German Regime gave us an exact route we had to take.. we were not allowed to leave the route. My dad always suspected my uncle to be a stasi member, everytime when he was around my dad shut silent and talked just about non political things.. After the fall of the wall he was able to find out the truth about my uncle.. he was right all the time.. he was a stasi member and every visit in east germany was well documented. it was not just about what my dad & mom talked about, it was about everything.. which food we had, which person we met, where we went and so on.. totally creepy.. I am so glad we dont have boarders anymore in europe.

Silent films are silent, so you need to pay close attention to the visuals and the word cards to keep up with what is going on. The same goes for these videos, as I don't speak urdu, I only understand English. So I think I tend to listen and watch more carefully to these videos than most other channels I watch regularly because I have to, to understand what's going on. But it also gives me a deeper appreciation for the experience as a whole. In a way, I think I've gotten to know and understand these people better than almost any other TH-cam channel, because there's no entertainment facade, it's just them explaining their thoughts and feelings and opinions from an authentic place and for that I really appreciate these videos. It makes me have to focus on it without distractions and I more closely listen to what they have to say. I think we could all stand to do that more in this age of noise. 👍

As a young child, I grew up with the same movies that my parents did, in the village hall “sixpenny pictures”. I had never seen TV and didn’t really know what it was, so the “pictures” were a treat on a Saturday morning. I vividly remember the magic of the Charlie Chaplin and the Laurel & Hardy films, which had us kids roaring and amazed - in the mid to late 1960s. I did not remember this speech, being too young to understand it at the time, but that extraordinarily beautiful and sinister dance with the globe in the same film, we perfectly understood without words.

These people are wonderful.👍🏼 Thank you for showing them to us all. It's a lesson for me as much as it is for them. It's so interesting knowing how other people view the West, and I still cant believe how nice they all are. That in itself is a huge lesson for me.🙏🏼

What fascinates me most about this speech is Chaplin didn't like that sound was coming in, as he believed it took more creativity and artistry to portray something without having to explain it. So when it came time for him to do a "talkie", he wanted to use the Tramp character who never spoke to say something meaningful.

I very much enjoyed watching this. I would love to see them react to one of Charlie Chaplin's silent films. They were revolutionary in that he was always making corrupt authority figures the butt of his jokes and those without power were the victors. Without sound, language wasn't a barrier to his comedy.

Amazing this is one of the first videos where I felt the tribesmen may know who the person was.. and some knew of Charlie Chaplin.. He was a worldwide phenomenon dating back to the silent age of cinema. very cool to see it still translates.

I would love to see them react to the speeches of Russian Orthodox Priest Alexander Men, he was a truly one of the most loving and wholesome priests in all of Russia and he called out for equality and to love each other rather than hate.

Men just like these gave kingly gifts to a homeless couple for their newborn son as they rested in a barn. Indeed, we think too much and feel too little. Kindness is the key. Kindness...and caution. For not all are deserving of mercy and empathy, there is no way to know who is or is not deserving. Be kind, be dignified, but be wary of evil. Compassion, not complacency.
