    It gotta be a healthy balance between internet trolls that don't have a clue just accusing folks of selling out, & just the common person inquiring & looking to simply understand...
    Case in point Prince was a strong advocate for keeping your masters & owning yourself & so was Curtis Mayfield. I feel like with Prince it was a matter of once they own you they get the final say in how the music is used.
    Dre denounced the usage of his music by certain politicians... who's to say in the wrong hands your catalog could be used to rewrite history or advocate for the wrong causes . Not everything is financial. What if they own Ice's catalog & 6 in the morning becomes the soundtrack to a complete minstrel show? These are simply questions I like to ask
    Also it's one thing to be rich, but why would wealthy folks have that much interest in paying a lump some for your catalog if not for the fact that they can generate long term profit & wealth from it? The artist are rich but the majors are wealthy.
    MJ owned the Beatles but it's rare that a black man sells the amount that Thriller sold & has that kind of cheddar to do so, & Paul McCartney didn't like it at the time, he out bid McCartney for his own work.
    So that's all I am wondering, how they use your catalog could be suspect. I'm not a troll critiquing the rich, healthy questions should be welcome from anyone.

    For music ownership, it all comes down to being fairly compensated. Early artist didn't even have a chance at fair ownership and being able to sale because they were being taken advantage of. If you can get a good deal that's well thought out, that's what matters.

    • @chg27856

    • @halfamic

      35 years is the default expiration of the master recording. The re-record method is a little more complex. I think Taylor Swift used that method, but she didn't outright "own her masters". She basically became a cover artist to her own music, but with more ownership rights than a typical cover artist, because of the way her contract was structured.

    • @f..kingf..k
      @f..kingf..k 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He just said it is based on the contract. His deal with Warner Brothers, they said you can have your masters back in 35 years. Bone thugs get the masters for Creepin On Ah Come Up in 2024. They were on a 30-year contract. In 2025, they get E.99, 2027, Art of War, and so forth. They even said they're selling their masters. Lil Wayne sold Young Money and some of his masters to Universal for 100 million.

    Black people have very low ownership in the United States.
    Once you sell your ownership, you'd better be savvy with the monies that you receive!
    Otherwise, there's a possibility that you might end up broke, and leave no generational wealth!
    If you study the history of generational wealth in this country, these people were always educated in building their legacies.
    Ownership is highly important in this world!

    • @marley1995

      I completely agree with you, except in the case of Ice T, he’s a mainstream rapper, with an old music catalog. He’s not an independent artist. He’s better off selling it. Other than that I’d agree with you 99% of the time.
