There was a bug in v1.1 which prevented the post-game Prof. Oak battle from triggering. It is fixed in the latest release → github.com/Dechrissen/poke-solus-rgb/releases

Gen 1 wasn't bad, it was just a product of its time. A bad game doesn't earn billions and capture the attention of millions of children (including myself) launching a franchise that is still going today and i believe is the most financially successful in the world. The problem is that people look at the earlier games in hindsight to the technology we have today. Gens 1 & 2 are incredible despite their flaws.
As time moves on, we have to acknowledge that video games really are art, and that means that if we're going to have to acknowledge the context in which a piece was created in order to appreciate it. All this judging of games from a purely 202X perspective that people are doing these days is outright antiintellectualism, on the level of people looking at a Picasso or Warhol without context and going "This art aged poorly." I mean, look at how people treat medieval art- the wonly look was actually a way to actively sidestep some religious rulings regarding representational art and blaspheme in imagery. (similar stuff held in a lot of religious music, too) There's so much we lose if we don't engebder a culture of knowledge and appreciation for what and why games were what they were when they were.
I love gen 1 and like not in a gen wunner way. I find a lot of charm in some of it's jank. It's kind of a broken and unbalanced scrappy little game that's held together with bubblegum and dreams. I find that extremely endearing.
I grew up playing pokemon red/blue. Most pokemon rom hacks these days add a national dex to whatever the game is. While this can be fun sometimes, there are so many pokemon nowadays it can just get ridiculous trying to catch them all. Thanks for rekindling my childhood by making a nostalgic game that keeps the simple magic of the original. I don’t NEED a billion pokemon to have fun. 151 was always enough for me.
Incredible you fixed core issues without adding ultra custom changes. You kept it as canon and tasteful as possible. Will be playing through this one very soon!
A nice, simple modification that doesn't overreach and doesn't drastically change the game? Fixing annoying issues that, while not dealbreakers, definitely subtract from the enjoyment? Implementing features that make it possible to play the game in the way you want? Not fixing the "issues" presented by modern fans looking back at Gen 1? Splendid!
This gave me a really interesting idea. Ok, so I've seen a lot of ROM hacks that try to smooth out the gen1 jank, but what if someone made a romhack that took everything that took all of the questionable design choices of gen 1 up to 11? Like, even sparser move pools, the 1/256 glitch becomes the 1/128 glitch, trainer AI is somehow worse, and even more pokemon are version exclusive. Badge boost glitch now activates on opponents pokemon stats as well. TMs are single use but now the moves can't be forgotten. Remove all protections from overflow/underflow errors
There is a handful of things I would recommend: Karate chop is now a fighting move and gust is now a flying move. Fighting types need some extra punch and early birds need an actual STAB move. Strength should be a rock move. You are throwing a rock or a bolder as the discription goes. THAT IS LITERALLY ROCK THROW. This would help a lot as there are only 2(?!) Rock moves. Make cut a bug move with a high crit ratio. This would be a great STAB on bugs. - Ghost should not be immune to psychic. - The 255 damage hp glitch Some general things: Aerodactyl can learn rock slide Dragonite can learn barrier Lickitung can learn lick Raichu can learn surf I hope your idea is going to be a good one!
A handful of these things have actually been implemented since this video. Check out the trailer, you can find it on my channel. :) The exceptions are the things which could not be justified by some "canonical" source; my philosophy when creating this romhack was to ensure the majority of the changes I made were justified by looking at Yellow, other Gen 1 releases, or sometimes Gen 2. If you're interested, you can read more about this in the Feature Log, which is in the GitHub repository. So for example, things like changing the typing of Cut or Strength simply because it might be nice, I didn't do. I wanted to keep things mostly vanilla, while enhancing the game via some mechanisms of Gen 2, or (rarely) brand new additions if I felt they enhanced the original experience (like the Field Move slots). But regarding your learnset update suggestions, some of those have been implemented via the justification that is Gen 2 tradeback learnsets.
Thought I was crazy when I remembered Lickitung being in Cerulean Cave. Adding it to the Safari Zone regardless is 100% the play. Looking forward to giving this a try!
Ha, you're not crazy! It was only in Cerulean Cave in Yellow, though. I thought that the Safari Zone location made more sense if I was going to choose one of the two canonical locations, since Cerulean Cave would limit access to Lickitung for use in your party during the main game.
I grew up playing red/blue, I was around 10 when they came out. Weirdest game design choice i thought Gamefreak made was having HMs infinite use, and also impossible/annoyingly hard to delete from a Pokémon's move set. For the longest time the only HM moove that was worth even using was surf, and after physical special split maybe waterfall instead of surf on high attack water Pokémon like Gyarados, but in certain generations when they went up to 7-8 HMs of mostly underpowered/useless moves it was too much. Even using and HM mule, you'd give up one party slot and still have to sacrifice another 3-4 move slots. Glad they got rid of them eventually.
I like the use of a field move slot (it's an idea I've had for a while) but it feels a little less "purist" to include it in such a rom hack, at least IMO. I think the constraint of potentially losing a valuable move slot to an HM to be a compelling one, and part of the intended design of the game, though I think the inability to delete HMs is ultimately too punishing for the average player. Nonetheless, I think the game benefits from asking the player to prepare their team for an upcoming route or challenge, as it leans into the role-playing aspect of being a Pokemon Trainer. But that's simply how I feel LOL, I understand I'm probably in the minority there... Either way, cool rom hack! I'd like to dip my toes into working with the disassembly at some point, so it's a little comforting knowing that it's not TOO intimidating for a first timer.
@@KeithTheGeek Yeah, I see where you're coming from, and I can definitely respect that view as well. In fact, I almost lean toward agreeing with you, but after playing Gen 1 over and over (other Gens are probably included as well), I just ended up feeling like the HM situation was an more of an annoying hindrance than anything. Simply because I wanted access to more Pokémon during each playthrough, along with access to more of their learnsets, to make each playthrough unique. My view was that removing the necessity to occupy a normal move slot would open up more of the "natural" potential of Pokémon, while still requiring the player to have a Pokémon that can learn a required HM. (i.e, the need for an appropriate Pokémon for some particular HM is not mitigated with this mechanic.) But you're right, the normal behavior can be seen as a valid constraint of Gen 1 as well. In fact, if you decide to give Solus a try, you don't even need to use the Field Move slots; you can bypass them and teach HMs as normal if you wanted to. I'm glad you like it though, at least aside from that one mechanic! You might be interested to read the 'Motivation' and 'Justifications' section of the Feature Log (in the GitHub repository) if you're curious about more of the reasoning behind all of my changes. I agree that HMs were likely intentionally designed as a strategic trade-off, but given how easy it is to switch HM slaves in and out of your party, it ultimately doesn't succeed at that and becomes largely a quality of life downgrade rather than an interesting decision. I think the approach outlined here is the best way of addressing it without making major design changes, but significantly changing the structure of the game so that you have a very limited ability to change party members could also work and realize some of the potential of the original concept.
@globalistgamer6418 Right, I agree with that. I think HM Slaves emerge from the desire to not bog down your party Pokemon with HMs that you ultimately won't use in battle. So an HM Slave is the obvious "solution" for a vanilla playthrough, and while it still allows you to keep your main party free from those moves, the result is that you'll either sacrifice your 6th party slot altogether, or you'll keep switching your HM Slave in and out of the PC when it's needed (and that's assuming you're willing to do that). But I also agree that the need for HMs is an interesting mechanic. That's why I personally liked the idea of keeping them mostly as-is, but moving them to a secondary Field Move slot. It's also why I don't care for Gen 7's Poke Ride; it eliminates the need to find Pokemon in the wild that can use all the different field moves. A good alternative in the case of Gen 7, imo, would have been to keep the "Ride" functionality, but to require the player to assign those "Ride" roles to Pokemon they've actually acquired.
Yes! When I heard bro saying in the intro that he accepted, or even enjoyed, the constraints of the older games' designs I thought "Finaly I have found another HM appreciator, and one who's even created a hack." Imagine the betrayal I felt when, of all the weird, broken, janky, nonsense is those games, HMs are the one real feature that he wants to axe. HMs, the core feature to evoking Pokemon's whole fantasy of exploring a rugged wilderness with the help of your magical monster friends. Apparently clearing a path for you, or allowing you to navigate a dark cave, or ferrying you swiftly back to the safety of a Pokemon Centre, or carrying your ass across oceans is "wasting their potential". Better to just have them learn Take Down or something I guess. (Reading back over this, I might sound slightly unhinged. I was being deliberately, rhetorically hyperbolic but the overall gist of my opinion is genuine.)
You must have missed the part which highlighted the fact that HMs are not "axed", and are in fact still necessary to progress. I made a point to say that it's still crucial to find Pokemon which can use those field moves for you. The only difference is that those moves don't occupy regular move slots (unless you want them to -- then they function as in vanilla). This idea that the "fantasy of exploring a rugged wilderness with the help of you magical monster friends" is "axed" is simply not the case. I also don't see how I've implied that their utility as HM-users is a waste of their potential. The potential I referred to is in battle. Again, you still need appropriate learners of the HMs to progress, just as you do in vanilla.
Holy shit, have a sub. I didn't realize you were on TH-cam but recently found Solus Red floating about the net. Finished a run a couple weeks ago with Dodrio, Jolteon, Golem, Victreebel, Snorlax and Starmie as my main/elite 4 team (evo trader behind the shop was a brilliant idea, feels so genuine to how it'd have worked if ninty actually removed the link cable like they considered). I already loved the original game but it was absolutely an improvement in every way. Thanks so much for your hard work and I look incredibly forward to seeing anything else you might produce.

It's only slightly different, but I've added a few things (all of which are featured in the trailer I recently released, which is also on this channel). this hack is a dream for those who experienced the original game way back in 1996/97. That was probably a big undertaking and kudos to you @Dechrissen. I dont know if this has been explored or done before but a set of R/B/G rom hacks which feature Red, Blue, and Green respectively with their own stories, would be a really cool idea and a good tie in with the original manga. Its probably impossible but that would be a delight to see.
That sounds like a cool idea, although it might be something that needs a complete redesign from the bottom up, since they'd all presumably have very different stories. An official game like that would be cool.
I appreciate the simplicity of everything here. As a teen I had tried making a couple of these kind of simpler rom hacks that would be my "perfect" version of early gen games, but I always ended up taking it too far. Trying to make trainers more difficult or find good niches for every Pokemon, it just never worked out. This looks like a lot better of a way to play a game that's closer to vanilla, although I'm definitely surprised you went with the back sprite changes. The terrible pixelated weird back sprites are something I'd feel wrong not using lol.
Appreciate it! Generally, I liked the idea of borrowing sprites from other releases of Gen 1 (all my favorite picks from among them). But in the same vein as some other changes I chose to make, I also borrowed some things from Gen 2 (or Pokemon 2 in this case, as it was called during its beta production where the back sprites were taken from). But all that being said, I understand that some people don't like any sprite changes from vanilla Red/Blue, and so I'm going to work on a config option which will allow building of the ROMs using various sprite sets. For example: Red/Blue sprites, Red/Green sprites, Yellow sprites, or the Solus set. And now since you've mentioned it, I think it would make sense to allow the user to configure whether the build uses the original blocky back sprites or these higher-res ones.
I dont mind hms and single use tms, i can even excuse the 151 pokemon not being available on a single game. What i do mind is the PC's extreamly limites space. For over 20 years i have had to let go my pokemon because the pc can bearly hold 30 pokemon. Or having to throw my dear and beloved items away because Reds back pack is more of a fanny pack and the pc storage is also very limited.
It's 20 per box, you can switch boxes and keep adding new Pokémon =) The annoying part is that you have to do it manually. So if you hit 20 on box while on the safari zone, too bad for you, have to go back to the Pokémon center and change box to catch more =/
There is enough space in the PC for all 151 Pokémon - you need to manually change boxes. Items, I agree. I'm a bit of a hoarder, so throwing items away is not fun for me.
Very good explanation of what you wanted to accomplish in making this hack and seems well executed. If there was one complaint i remember having even when the games first came out (not in hindsight with the benefit of technology and other games) it was the over emphasis on exclusivity of certain pokemon to their game. I get why they did it though, but i still never liked it lol

How humble of you to describe your own Romhack as perfect. You made roughly 4 or 5 changes, most of them good. But yeah go ahead and just call your own creation perfect, you absolute Elite Gamer, you.
Honestly, I prefer the more down to earth lore of the original game- it was urban fantasy, not fantasy with modern elements. They retconned it really quick, but Pokemon originally was set on Earth, and Pokemon were just the technical name of supernatural creatures that folks were finally able to scientifically study. Pokemon husbandry had begun in earnest recently because of the advent of the mass production of the pokeball and the development of the Pokemon Storage System. Before that, it was somewhat niche, and had only recently started with Oak and Agatha's generation.
There was nothing bad about Gen I. It was the pioneer to what we know and love today. Of course it wasn’t perfect. But it remains a nostalgic piece of history and the blueprint to all the games we love. Some People just don’t know how to enjoy and respect history. That being said, I 100% agree with your 3 critiques, especially the HM one. I’m excited to take a look at this.
Dude this is amazing. You're keeping the games as vanilla as possible while actually making good and needed changes. I would love if you ever decided to make a gen2 Solus with the same philosophy and changes to make both roms not only compatible but also to work as the real sequel to Solus! Solus RGB + Solus GSC. I made a ROM hack for Pokémon red, you can catch all 151, trade evolution, Pokémon evolve at level 35 and no longer needed to be traded, every single trainer, including gym leader, has a revised team, and is in full color.. I used swampert tools..
0:26 i agree very much. gen 1 isnt my favorite by far but its a good game for what it is. its a buggy mess but clearly has a lot of love put into it and i appreciate that. also gen 1 is charming as hell best charm factor out of all of the games. theres just something special about the maps, music, and overworld sprite style of the games. also they are the first games, so to me its passable to be rough around the edges and have errors.
I love how people describe the first Pokemon games with such ridiculous hindsight. They revolutionized handheld gaming, helped greatly to launch a series that is still going strong roughly 30 years later, etc. But yeah, it's a "buggy mess" that's "good for what it is." Hard LOL.
I always thought HM could be just regular moves interacting to the world, outside battle. Also the biggest letdown for Gen 1, are the Bug types, for being the inspiration for the game. With no bug move set, it really sucks. Especially when it would rival Psychic types.
That is true, although at the same time, I think the general weakness of Bug-types is usually reflected by in-game dialogue and their fast growth rate, etc. NPCs will usually point out that they're weak, but they also grow fast to make up for it.
Yes, it should work. I tested trading/battling with vanilla Red/Blue cartridges, and that works as intended. So there should be no issues using Time Capsule in Gen 2.

@@moriahthenoblethief No problem! And the original name for the Rival in the Japanese release is Green (in the games) and the name of the girl character is Blue (in the manga). These were switched for the localizations of the games/manga. That's why her name is Green in the English release of the manga. I chose to use the original Japanese names for this romhack, as I felt it was most appropriate.
Is there dark & steel typing? If so I hope dark and ghost could switch their physical/special status so that ghost is special and dark is physical. This looks awesome! I was completely sold on the back sprite change alone😂

Hm, it's possible, but the next project would probably be a Gen 2 equivalent of this Solus treatment. Only because Gen 1 is already taken care of in my mind with this RGB romhack. But I know a lot of people like Yellow even better. @theinternetofficer6594 If you don't like puzzles, don't play a game that has them. So basically you're saying, you're not good at puzzles. Also, HM slaves are for people who forget you can just deposit Pokemon when you don't need them. You're not supposed to rush through and beat the game in 1 day. It's an adventure, not fortnite.

This seems like a great idea... I tried Blue 151 which SHOULD be basically what this hack is... but it changes a lot of stuff like the map and TM availability for one thing I think it would be nice if you offered additional ips patches that use the original (Red and Blue) sprites though, I know they're kinda janky, but they're part of that same jank Gen 1 experience I grew up on. It feels wrong not to have them there
Actually, I do have plans to implement other config options when building the ROMs. At first, I was just planning to use this 'Solus' set (which is a selection of my favorites), but I find that some people like R/B, and some like Yellow. So I think I'm going to implement these different config options soon, and you'd be able to build the ROM with whichever sprite set you want (Solus set, R/B set, Yellow set, or R/G set). Look out for that soon! You can watch the GitHub repository to keep up with updates like that.
Correct :) when it came to deciding on locations for Pokemon which didn't have good Gen 1 locations to cite, I looked to other games. In the case of the starters, I looked at the Let's Go games (which use Viridian Forest, Rock Tunnel, and Seafoam Islands). They're all found at 1% encounter rates in their respective locations.

(Check the description to find it) As far as Mew, I didn't add any direct "hints" to its location, but it is not missable. :)
I love enhancement hacks and I love that I found this one. I plan on playing through it. However I do wish your philosophy was different when pertaining to Pokemon move pools. Most pokemon are designed enough to be enemies in the wild and no more, so they are just unusable unfortunately. Please consider changing that one thing.
This video doesn't include it, because it was a more recent change, but in v1.1 I have updated all Pokemon learnsets to match those used in Yellow. The reason I avoided tweaking it beyond that is because I struggled to come up with a good guiding principle. I would need some principle to ensure the changes are logical and consistent, rather than simply going through every Pokemon and adding "more good moves" to their learnsets. It just didn't seem faithful to vanilla. Also, TMs exist. But I am open to suggestions!
@@EtherealLifeline I do like Pure RGB but I play lots of enhancement hacks for gens 1 and 2 and this looks great! I love the trade NPC that is my favorite way to handle trade evos. other rom hacks have done it before and its the way to go. But its just hard to play through the game if you don't use the very few Pokemon that learn more than just normal moves. I don't think people realize how poor the move pools are in gen 1. Really gens 1 thru 3. but thank you for the recommendation.

I do want you to know even though I have that one complaint I love your solutions to these issues and I am glad this rom is out for people to play! Ok so as far as moves go I definitely understand wanting a good set of rules to go by so that not every Pokemon has the best moves they could possibly have, however base Gen 1 is so far from that for instance Rhyhorn/Rhydon only learn normal moves by level up. Not one rock or ground type on a ground/rock Pokemon. Even in yellow I believe. Or Aerodactyl not learning a rock move. TBH a lot probably most Pokemon only learn normal damaging moves. It's not about difficulty its about using a grass Pokemon without grass moves or a ground Pokemon without ground moves doesn't even feel like your using a Pokemon of its type. I know that there are TM's but even that only helps so much. Lets take Moltres for example. Moltres doesn't learn Flamethrower and Flamethrower is not a TM (which it should be). So you have a legendary Pokemon who can only learn Fireblast. Anyway so for a good rule set I think one (easy even) option is take a look at what Yellow Legacy did for move pools. The legacy series motto is to enhance but still leave the game true to the original game. However if you don't like Yellow Legacy's move pools I would love to go discuss some possible solutions with you! Truly! Please let me know and thank you for being open to suggestions!
No problem! I've been thinking about it some more. I think the cases of Rhyhorn and Rhydon are not necessarily problematic, because they learn all of the good Ground/Rock-type TMs. Moltres is perhaps a good example, since it learns Flamethrower in Gen 2, and that might be a good data point to cite for the justification for that change. Although Moltres is not usually relevant, since most people opt not to use Legendaries in normal playthroughs (but it's still worth noting). I think a good example is actually Rapidash, because it doesn't learn Flamethrower by level-up, but it does learn Flamethrower by TM in Gen 3... I do think Rapidash is problematic because it's hard to make a case to use it as a Fire-type, but the potential solutions for that case are difficult, because you'd need to either: 1) make the decision to give it Flamethrower by level-up (but there are no canonical examples of this in Gen 1/2/3) or 2) add Flamethrower as a TM ... I'm not sure which of these would theoretically be better/more true to vanilla. Anyway, I'm happy to talk more about it on Discord if you want. My username is the same as here.
It's weird if single-use TMs are one of the biggest complaints about Gen 1 from new players. Not only is that mechanic in the majority of Pokemon games, including the most recent main series game and remake, Gen 1 stands out for offering a workaround in the form of easy in-game item-duping. Not being able to dupe TMs any more in Gen 2 felt like a step back and made me way less interested in Stadium 2.
I gew up with gen 1&2 and the ones after dont interest me. What puts me off most about gen 1 is the psychic type. Alakazam is my favorite but its too strong 😅😢
Ocarina of Time is like the buggiest game of all time and nobody makes excuses about it being bad for that lol. Like it's actually trumped Gen 1 in how broken it is
There are a lot of bugs in many popular games. Scarlet and Violet are considered bad because of their bugginess not sure why Gen 1 and Ocarina of Time are forgiven for that type of stuff
@@crestofhonor2349 Well, OoT you aren't going to accidentally perform a glitch I guess. Gen 1 is more or less the same, but both games in terms of general functionality are already glitched. Slash doing critical hit all the time for instance, the gen 1 miss, or power crouch stab in OoT doing 0 damage if you enter a new area without having swung your sword. Point is this game is broken af lol. WR is under 4 minutes
It's been asked a lot actually, but I don't have any immediate plans. It seems like a lot of people prefer Yellow! I wouldn't discount the possibility, but it's more likely that I'd delve into a Solus G/S project first. Solus Yellow would be a lot of the same work, so it would be very doable, but I probably wouldn't start anytime soon. I also have a few more small plans for this romhack first (config options for other spritesets for those who don't like my picks, possible difficulty add-on settings, etc.).
Bad? No. These games were experimental at the time and game freak (nowadays Lazyfreak) had a lot of trouble implementing things. Bad are the games that came after and didn't improve enough. Gen 1 and 2 are the best generations. Black and white and HGSS are the best games in the franchise but the best gens are the 2 first.
People cite its flaws and differences compared to modern titles all the time, and some of those people are implying that the "old" is inherently bad, and fail to see Gen 1 in isolation.
I'm not too sure. I've seen Yellow Legacy mentioned a few times in the comments, and from what I can tell it sounds like people find them somewhat similar. But either way, Red/Blue and Yellow are 2 different games, so you'll still have those differences. But check out the README on GitHub, it'll give you a quick overview of the features. You know, that's an interesting idea. I'm going to add that to my list. Implying Oak took it, right? Although, I'm not sure if it would've been the case that he took that specific Pokeball. Agatha for example mentions how Oak used to be stronger/etc. in their youth, and now he's been "messing around with his Pokedex" or something similar in his old age. So perhaps Oak already had the third starter from years ago?
Nah, I like to think the games are basically copying the anime (especially pokemon origins). There are many trainers from pallet, and we play as red. Red chooses first, Blue (Gary?) chooses second, and then Green (Leaf?) comes after the boys leave. As for the timing in the games, by the time Red (you) run to Viridian and back, we can imagine Leaf (the third trainer) has come to pick her (their) starter. Ash then would come much later and get his pika pal. In my mind, Red gets charmander, Blue wants to outdo him so he takes squirtle, and Leaf takes bulbasur. That being said, taking whatever you want is fine; you're essentially playing as a trainer from Pallet, and you can assume any role you want (even just be you). Another fun idea would be if in Red, your rival chose the stronger one, Blue, your rival chose the weaker one, then in Green, you didn't have a trainer battle (but for the sake of gameplay, you can still choose whatever starter you wanted). That way, three players could pick up the three pack of games and literally be rivals. Would be kind of cool. Though... Green would have to find a solution for the rival battles? Eh, maybe it's all too much. Anyway, just having the pokeball disappear would add a bit to the story / world building, so that'd be cool. #rant: It makes me wonder how could someone get an Eevee (and I'm convinced Pokemon Yellow is just fan service).
Oh, I see. But the games came first, so that stuff wouldn't apply, especially the Ash/Pikachu part. Yellow Version is a slight re-imagining of Gen 1 through the lens of the anime, which is why the starter selection is replaced with Pikachu. i.e., there technically isn't a world where Ash and Red coexist. It's true that the third trainer girl (Blue is her canonical name, while your rival's is Green, which is why I swapped the default names in the name selection) would have chosen the third, but she was never implemented in these Gen 1 games. So I think it might be weird to shoehorn her in and make the 3rd ball disappear, and never have her show up in-game.
@@Dechrissen Ah too bad then. I guess you're right. Pallet town only has 2 houses. Makes you wonder where everyone else in pallet (2 civilians, the scientists) live. The lab could have spare bedrooms, and... the other two could be Blue/Green's parents? Hm.. Anyway, maybe to stay true to the originals, the ball should stay? Sigh.
Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee are cool games imo. I recommend them in general, if you haven't played them yet. It's provides a nice view of Kanto/the characters.
Ah, I think I found a bug which prevented the Oak battle from triggering! That sucks, I'd tested it but I just made a small mistake before releasing the final version. Thanks for bringing that to my attention! I'm going to release an update with the fix ASAP.

I know I’m late on this but every time I hear someone say gen 1&2 of Pokémon is buggy, busted, etc. I always said learn to exploit the game just figure it out like most that didn’t have the option to looked up a guide book/tutorial you noob.
I disagree that its a bad design. There is a big difference between design (like gameplay and battle systems)and exaction(coding) The base design is still pretty much the same 9 generations later. It needed to be fleshed out more and coded better but its design is the reason Pokemon is the highest grossing Franchise of all time! And not by a small margin. Even with there flaws they are enjoyable games and still belong with the list of best games ever made.
@renatoramos8834 Red/Blues Design has mostly gone unchanged up through today's Pokemon games. So if its design is bad, then all main series Pokemon games are bad. Which is obviously not the case since I pointed out how it's the best-selling franchise ever.

It's both subjectively and objectively a good game. One of the best selling games of all time and almost singlehandedly created the massive empire that is Pokémon in the modern world.

Gen 1 wasn't bad, it was just a product of its time. A bad game doesn't earn billions and capture the attention of millions of children (including myself) launching a franchise that is still going today and i believe is the most financially successful in the world. The problem is that people look at the earlier games in hindsight to the technology we have today. Gens 1 & 2 are incredible despite their flaws.

As time moves on, we have to acknowledge that video games really are art, and that means that if we're going to have to acknowledge the context in which a piece was created in order to appreciate it.
All this judging of games from a purely 202X perspective that people are doing these days is outright antiintellectualism, on the level of people looking at a Picasso or Warhol without context and going "This art aged poorly."
I mean, look at how people treat medieval art- the wonly look was actually a way to actively sidestep some religious rulings regarding representational art and blaspheme in imagery. (similar stuff held in a lot of religious music, too)
There's so much we lose if we don't engebder a culture of knowledge and appreciation for what and why games were what they were when they were.
I love gen 1 and like not in a gen wunner way. I find a lot of charm in some of it's jank. It's kind of a broken and unbalanced scrappy little game that's held together with bubblegum and dreams. I find that extremely endearing.
Scarlet and violet sold millions but it was a very bad game with more problems that someone who grew up with the company would like to admit
I grew up playing pokemon red/blue. Most pokemon rom hacks these days add a national dex to whatever the game is. While this can be fun sometimes, there are so many pokemon nowadays it can just get ridiculous trying to catch them all. Thanks for rekindling my childhood by making a nostalgic game that keeps the simple magic of the original. I don’t NEED a billion pokemon to have fun. 151 was always enough for me.

This gave me a really interesting idea.
Ok, so I've seen a lot of ROM hacks that try to smooth out the gen1 jank, but what if someone made a romhack that took everything that took all of the questionable design choices of gen 1 up to 11? Like, even sparser move pools, the 1/256 glitch becomes the 1/128 glitch, trainer AI is somehow worse, and even more pokemon are version exclusive. Badge boost glitch now activates on opponents pokemon stats as well. TMs are single use but now the moves can't be forgotten. Remove all protections from overflow/underflow errors

I like the fresh take on gen 1
There is a handful of things I would recommend:
Karate chop is now a fighting move and gust is now a flying move. Fighting types need some extra punch and early birds need an actual STAB move.
Strength should be a rock move. You are throwing a rock or a bolder as the discription goes. THAT IS LITERALLY ROCK THROW. This would help a lot as there are only 2(?!) Rock moves.
Make cut a bug move with a high crit ratio. This would be a great STAB on bugs.
- Ghost should not be immune to psychic.
- The 255 damage hp glitch
Some general things:
Aerodactyl can learn rock slide
Dragonite can learn barrier
Lickitung can learn lick
Raichu can learn surf

A handful of these things have actually been implemented since this video. Check out the trailer, you can find it on my channel. :)
The exceptions are the things which could not be justified by some "canonical" source; my philosophy when creating this romhack was to ensure the majority of the changes I made were justified by looking at Yellow, other Gen 1 releases, or sometimes Gen 2. If you're interested, you can read more about this in the Feature Log, which is in the GitHub repository. So for example, things like changing the typing of Cut or Strength simply because it might be nice, I didn't do. I wanted to keep things mostly vanilla, while enhancing the game via some mechanisms of Gen 2, or (rarely) brand new additions if I felt they enhanced the original experience (like the Field Move slots).
But regarding your learnset update suggestions, some of those have been implemented via the justification that is Gen 2 tradeback learnsets.

Thought I was crazy when I remembered Lickitung being in Cerulean Cave. Adding it to the Safari Zone regardless is 100% the play. Looking forward to giving this a try!
Ha, you're not crazy! It was only in Cerulean Cave in Yellow, though. I thought that the Safari Zone location made more sense if I was going to choose one of the two canonical locations, since Cerulean Cave would limit access to Lickitung for use in your party during the main game.
I grew up playing red/blue, I was around 10 when they came out. Weirdest game design choice i thought Gamefreak made was having HMs infinite use, and also impossible/annoyingly hard to delete from a Pokémon's move set. For the longest time the only HM moove that was worth even using was surf, and after physical special split maybe waterfall instead of surf on high attack water Pokémon like Gyarados, but in certain generations when they went up to 7-8 HMs of mostly underpowered/useless moves it was too much. Even using and HM mule, you'd give up one party slot and still have to sacrifice another 3-4 move slots. Glad they got rid of them eventually.
I like the use of a field move slot (it's an idea I've had for a while) but it feels a little less "purist" to include it in such a rom hack, at least IMO. I think the constraint of potentially losing a valuable move slot to an HM to be a compelling one, and part of the intended design of the game, though I think the inability to delete HMs is ultimately too punishing for the average player. Nonetheless, I think the game benefits from asking the player to prepare their team for an upcoming route or challenge, as it leans into the role-playing aspect of being a Pokemon Trainer. But that's simply how I feel LOL, I understand I'm probably in the minority there...
Either way, cool rom hack! I'd like to dip my toes into working with the disassembly at some point, so it's a little comforting knowing that it's not TOO intimidating for a first timer.
@@KeithTheGeek Yeah, I see where you're coming from, and I can definitely respect that view as well. In fact, I almost lean toward agreeing with you, but after playing Gen 1 over and over (other Gens are probably included as well), I just ended up feeling like the HM situation was an more of an annoying hindrance than anything. Simply because I wanted access to more Pokémon during each playthrough, along with access to more of their learnsets, to make each playthrough unique. My view was that removing the necessity to occupy a normal move slot would open up more of the "natural" potential of Pokémon, while still requiring the player to have a Pokémon that can learn a required HM. (i.e, the need for an appropriate Pokémon for some particular HM is not mitigated with this mechanic.)
But you're right, the normal behavior can be seen as a valid constraint of Gen 1 as well. In fact, if you decide to give Solus a try, you don't even need to use the Field Move slots; you can bypass them and teach HMs as normal if you wanted to.
I'm glad you like it though, at least aside from that one mechanic! You might be interested to read the 'Motivation' and 'Justifications' section of the Feature Log (in the GitHub repository) if you're curious about more of the reasoning behind all of my changes. I agree that HMs were likely intentionally designed as a strategic trade-off, but given how easy it is to switch HM slaves in and out of your party, it ultimately doesn't succeed at that and becomes largely a quality of life downgrade rather than an interesting decision. I think the approach outlined here is the best way of addressing it without making major design changes, but significantly changing the structure of the game so that you have a very limited ability to change party members could also work and realize some of the potential of the original concept.
@globalistgamer6418 Right, I agree with that. I think HM Slaves emerge from the desire to not bog down your party Pokemon with HMs that you ultimately won't use in battle. So an HM Slave is the obvious "solution" for a vanilla playthrough, and while it still allows you to keep your main party free from those moves, the result is that you'll either sacrifice your 6th party slot altogether, or you'll keep switching your HM Slave in and out of the PC when it's needed (and that's assuming you're willing to do that).
But I also agree that the need for HMs is an interesting mechanic. That's why I personally liked the idea of keeping them mostly as-is, but moving them to a secondary Field Move slot. It's also why I don't care for Gen 7's Poke Ride; it eliminates the need to find Pokemon in the wild that can use all the different field moves. A good alternative in the case of Gen 7, imo, would have been to keep the "Ride" functionality, but to require the player to assign those "Ride" roles to Pokemon they've actually acquired.

When I heard bro saying in the intro that he accepted, or even enjoyed, the constraints of the older games' designs I thought "Finaly I have found another HM appreciator, and one who's even created a hack."
Imagine the betrayal I felt when, of all the weird, broken, janky, nonsense is those games, HMs are the one real feature that he wants to axe.
HMs, the core feature to evoking Pokemon's whole fantasy of exploring a rugged wilderness with the help of your magical monster friends. Apparently clearing a path for you, or allowing you to navigate a dark cave, or ferrying you swiftly back to the safety of a Pokemon Centre, or carrying your ass across oceans is "wasting their potential". Better to just have them learn Take Down or something I guess.
(Reading back over this, I might sound slightly unhinged. I was being deliberately, rhetorically hyperbolic but the overall gist of my opinion is genuine.)
You must have missed the part which highlighted the fact that HMs are not "axed", and are in fact still necessary to progress. I made a point to say that it's still crucial to find Pokemon which can use those field moves for you. The only difference is that those moves don't occupy regular move slots (unless you want them to -- then they function as in vanilla). This idea that the "fantasy of exploring a rugged wilderness with the help of you magical monster friends" is "axed" is simply not the case.
I also don't see how I've implied that their utility as HM-users is a waste of their potential. The potential I referred to is in battle. Again, you still need appropriate learners of the HMs to progress, just as you do in vanilla.
Holy shit, have a sub. I didn't realize you were on TH-cam but recently found Solus Red floating about the net. Finished a run a couple weeks ago with Dodrio, Jolteon, Golem, Victreebel, Snorlax and Starmie as my main/elite 4 team (evo trader behind the shop was a brilliant idea, feels so genuine to how it'd have worked if ninty actually removed the link cable like they considered). I already loved the original game but it was absolutely an improvement in every way. Thanks so much for your hard work and I look incredibly forward to seeing anything else you might produce.
That's awesome to hear! Thanks! I wonder if you've seen the few additions in v1.3, if you played a couple weeks ago. It's only slightly different, but I've added a few things (all of which are featured in the trailer I recently released, which is also on this channel). I think for the most part it's finished at this point though, with the exception of possibly restoring the rival's cut victory speeches, which exist in the code.

this hack is a dream for those who experienced the original game way back in 1996/97. That was probably a big undertaking and kudos to you @Dechrissen.
I dont know if this has been explored or done before but a set of R/B/G rom hacks which feature Red, Blue, and Green respectively with their own stories, would be a really cool idea and a good tie in with the original manga. Its probably impossible but that would be a delight to see.
That sounds like a cool idea, although it might be something that needs a complete redesign from the bottom up, since they'd all presumably have very different stories. An official game like that would be cool.
I appreciate the simplicity of everything here. As a teen I had tried making a couple of these kind of simpler rom hacks that would be my "perfect" version of early gen games, but I always ended up taking it too far. Trying to make trainers more difficult or find good niches for every Pokemon, it just never worked out. This looks like a lot better of a way to play a game that's closer to vanilla, although I'm definitely surprised you went with the back sprite changes. The terrible pixelated weird back sprites are something I'd feel wrong not using lol.
Appreciate it! Generally, I liked the idea of borrowing sprites from other releases of Gen 1 (all my favorite picks from among them). But in the same vein as some other changes I chose to make, I also borrowed some things from Gen 2 (or Pokemon 2 in this case, as it was called during its beta production where the back sprites were taken from). But all that being said, I understand that some people don't like any sprite changes from vanilla Red/Blue, and so I'm going to work on a config option which will allow building of the ROMs using various sprite sets. For example: Red/Blue sprites, Red/Green sprites, Yellow sprites, or the Solus set. And now since you've mentioned it, I think it would make sense to allow the user to configure whether the build uses the original blocky back sprites or these higher-res ones.
I dont mind hms and single use tms, i can even excuse the 151 pokemon not being available on a single game. What i do mind is the PC's extreamly limites space. For over 20 years i have had to let go my pokemon because the pc can bearly hold 30 pokemon. Or having to throw my dear and beloved items away because Reds back pack is more of a fanny pack and the pc storage is also very limited.
...Please tell me you phrased this poorly and you know you can change pokemon PC boxes, right?
It's 20 per box, you can switch boxes and keep adding new Pokémon =)
The annoying part is that you have to do it manually.
So if you hit 20 on box while on the safari zone, too bad for you, have to go back to the Pokémon center and change box to catch more =/
There is enough space in the PC for all 151 Pokémon - you need to manually change boxes.

Very good explanation of what you wanted to accomplish in making this hack and seems well executed. If there was one complaint i remember having even when the games first came out (not in hindsight with the benefit of technology and other games) it was the over emphasis on exclusivity of certain pokemon to their game. I get why they did it though, but i still never liked it lol

I suppose I have the opposite view from most Pokémon fans: the newer games changed things, so I prefer the 1st gen.
Honestly, I prefer the more down to earth lore of the original game- it was urban fantasy, not fantasy with modern elements.
They retconned it really quick, but Pokemon originally was set on Earth, and Pokemon were just the technical name of supernatural creatures that folks were finally able to scientifically study.
Pokemon husbandry had begun in earnest recently because of the advent of the mass production of the pokeball and the development of the Pokemon Storage System. Before that, it was somewhat niche, and had only recently started with Oak and Agatha's generation.
To this day gen1-2 are real pokemon games to me. Gen3 plus felt like a half-baked reboot that took away from the world building of gen1-2.
There was nothing bad about Gen I. It was the pioneer to what we know and love today. Of course it wasn’t perfect. But it remains a nostalgic piece of history and the blueprint to all the games we love.
Some People just don’t know how to enjoy and respect history.
That being said, I 100% agree with your 3 critiques, especially the HM one. I’m excited to take a look at this.
Dude this is amazing. You're keeping the games as vanilla as possible while actually making good and needed changes. I would love if you ever decided to make a gen2 Solus with the same philosophy and changes to make both roms not only compatible but also to work as the real sequel to Solus! Solus RGB + Solus GSC.

I made a ROM hack for Pokémon red, you can catch all 151, trade evolution, Pokémon evolve at level 35 and no longer needed to be traded, every single trainer, including gym leader, has a revised team, and is in full color.. I used swampert tools..

And make HMs usable (from some secondary menu) if a Pokemon in your party is able to learn them? I think that's a good idea too, tbh.
0:26 i agree very much. gen 1 isnt my favorite by far but its a good game for what it is. its a buggy mess but clearly has a lot of love put into it and i appreciate that. also gen 1 is charming as hell best charm factor out of all of the games. theres just something special about the maps, music, and overworld sprite style of the games. also they are the first games, so to me its passable to be rough around the edges and have errors.

I always thought HM could be just regular moves interacting to the world, outside battle. Also the biggest letdown for Gen 1, are the Bug types, for being the inspiration for the game. With no bug move set, it really sucks. Especially when it would rival Psychic types.
That is true, although at the same time, I think the general weakness of Bug-types is usually reflected by in-game dialogue and their fast growth rate, etc. NPCs will usually point out that they're weak, but they also grow fast to make up for it.
question is it also compatible trade in PKMN Gold/Silver/Crystal via Time Capsule?!
Yes, it should work. I tested trading/battling with vanilla Red/Blue cartridges, and that works as intended. So there should be no issues using Time Capsule in Gen 2.

@@moriahthenoblethief No problem! And the original name for the Rival in the Japanese release is Green (in the games) and the name of the girl character is Blue (in the manga). These were switched for the localizations of the games/manga. That's why her name is Green in the English release of the manga. I chose to use the original Japanese names for this romhack, as I felt it was most appropriate.
Is there dark & steel typing? If so I hope dark and ghost could switch their physical/special status so that ghost is special and dark is physical. This looks awesome! I was completely sold on the back sprite change alone😂

Hm, it's possible, but the next project would probably be a Gen 2 equivalent of this Solus treatment. Only because Gen 1 is already taken care of in my mind with this RGB romhack. But I know a lot of people like Yellow even better. Also, HM slaves are for people who forget you can just deposit Pokemon when you don't need them. You're not supposed to rush through and beat the game in 1 day. It's an adventure, not fortnite.

This seems like a great idea... I tried Blue 151 which SHOULD be basically what this hack is... but it changes a lot of stuff like the map and TM availability for one thing
I think it would be nice if you offered additional ips patches that use the original (Red and Blue) sprites though, I know they're kinda janky, but they're part of that same jank Gen 1 experience I grew up on. It feels wrong not to have them there
Actually, I do have plans to implement other config options when building the ROMs. At first, I was just planning to use this 'Solus' set (which is a selection of my favorites), but I find that some people like R/B, and some like Yellow. So I think I'm going to implement these different config options soon, and you'd be able to build the ROM with whichever sprite set you want (Solus set, R/B set, Yellow set, or R/G set). Look out for that soon! You can watch the GitHub repository to keep up with updates like that.

Correct :) when it came to deciding on locations for Pokemon which didn't have good Gen 1 locations to cite, I looked to other games. In the case of the starters, I looked at the Let's Go games (which use Viridian Forest, Rock Tunnel, and Seafoam Islands). They're all found at 1% encounter rates in their respective locations.

As far as Mew, I didn't add any direct "hints" to its location, but it is not missable. :)

I love enhancement hacks and I love that I found this one. I plan on playing through it. However I do wish your philosophy was different when pertaining to Pokemon move pools. Most pokemon are designed enough to be enemies in the wild and no more, so they are just unusable unfortunately. Please consider changing that one thing.
This video doesn't include it, because it was a more recent change, but in v1.1 I have updated all Pokemon learnsets to match those used in Yellow. The reason I avoided tweaking it beyond that is because I struggled to come up with a good guiding principle. I would need some principle to ensure the changes are logical and consistent, rather than simply going through every Pokemon and adding "more good moves" to their learnsets. It just didn't seem faithful to vanilla. Also, TMs exist. But I am open to suggestions!
Pokemon PureRGB is probably more your taste and changes quite a bit more than this hack. This hack is too vanilla for me.
@@EtherealLifeline I do like Pure RGB but I play lots of enhancement hacks for gens 1 and 2 and this looks great! I love the trade NPC that is my favorite way to handle trade evos. other rom hacks have done it before and its the way to go. But its just hard to play through the game if you don't use the very few Pokemon that learn more than just normal moves. I don't think people realize how poor the move pools are in gen 1. Really gens 1 thru 3. but thank you for the recommendation.

I do want you to know even though I have that one complaint I love your solutions to these issues and I am glad this rom is out for people to play! Ok so as far as moves go I definitely understand wanting a good set of rules to go by so that not every Pokemon has the best moves they could possibly have, however base Gen 1 is so far from that for instance Rhyhorn/Rhydon only learn normal moves by level up. Not one rock or ground type on a ground/rock Pokemon. Even in yellow I believe. Or Aerodactyl not learning a rock move. TBH a lot probably most Pokemon only learn normal damaging moves. It's not about difficulty its about using a grass Pokemon without grass moves or a ground Pokemon without ground moves doesn't even feel like your using a Pokemon of its type. I know that there are TM's but even that only helps so much. Lets take Moltres for example. Moltres doesn't learn Flamethrower and Flamethrower is not a TM (which it should be). So you have a legendary Pokemon who can only learn Fireblast. Anyway so for a good rule set I think one (easy even) option is take a look at what Yellow Legacy did for move pools. The legacy series motto is to enhance but still leave the game true to the original game. However if you don't like Yellow Legacy's move pools I would love to go discuss some possible solutions with you! Truly! Please let me know and thank you for being open to suggestions!

I've been thinking about it some more. I think the cases of Rhyhorn and Rhydon are not necessarily problematic, because they learn all of the good Ground/Rock-type TMs. Moltres is perhaps a good example, since it learns Flamethrower in Gen 2, and that might be a good data point to cite for the justification for that change. Although Moltres is not usually relevant, since most people opt not to use Legendaries in normal playthroughs (but it's still worth noting).
I think a good example is actually Rapidash, because it doesn't learn Flamethrower by level-up, but it does learn Flamethrower by TM in Gen 3... I do think Rapidash is problematic because it's hard to make a case to use it as a Fire-type, but the potential solutions for that case are difficult, because you'd need to either: 1) make the decision to give it Flamethrower by level-up (but there are no canonical examples of this in Gen 1/2/3) or 2) add Flamethrower as a TM ... I'm not sure which of these would theoretically be better/more true to vanilla.

It's weird if single-use TMs are one of the biggest complaints about Gen 1 from new players. Not only is that mechanic in the majority of Pokemon games, including the most recent main series game and remake, Gen 1 stands out for offering a workaround in the form of easy in-game item-duping. Not being able to dupe TMs any more in Gen 2 felt like a step back and made me way less interested in Stadium 2.
I gew up with gen 1&2 and the ones after dont interest me. What puts me off most about gen 1 is the psychic type. Alakazam is my favorite but its too strong 😅😢

There are a lot of bugs in many popular games. Scarlet and Violet are considered bad because of their bugginess not sure why Gen 1 and Ocarina of Time are forgiven for that type of stuff
@@crestofhonor2349 Well, OoT you aren't going to accidentally perform a glitch I guess. Gen 1 is more or less the same, but both games in terms of general functionality are already glitched. Slash doing critical hit all the time for instance, the gen 1 miss, or power crouch stab in OoT doing 0 damage if you enter a new area without having swung your sword.

Any plans for a Solus Yellow?
It's been asked a lot actually, but I don't have any immediate plans. It seems like a lot of people prefer Yellow! I wouldn't discount the possibility, but it's more likely that I'd delve into a Solus G/S project first.
Solus Yellow would be a lot of the same work, so it would be very doable, but I probably wouldn't start anytime soon. I also have a few more small plans for this romhack first (config options for other spritesets for those who don't like my picks, possible difficulty add-on settings, etc.).
Bad? No. These games were experimental at the time and game freak (nowadays Lazyfreak) had a lot of trouble implementing things.
Bad are the games that came after and didn't improve enough. Gen 1 and 2 are the best generations. Black and white and HGSS are the best games in the franchise but the best gens are the 2 first.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone ever say gen 1 was flawed and therefor bad... like ever , it's literally rated as the best game ever made
People cite its flaws and differences compared to modern titles all the time, and some of those people are implying that the "old" is inherently bad, and fail to see Gen 1 in isolation.

Yes, it should work as normal. I've been meaning to test it to be sure, but haven't yet (but I made no changes that should affect it).
Gen 1 and 2 are true pokemon games, everything else is derivative.
How is this compared Yellow Legacy?
I'm not too sure. I've seen Yellow Legacy mentioned a few times in the comments, and from what I can tell it sounds like people find them somewhat similar. But either way, Red/Blue and Yellow are 2 different games, so you'll still have those differences. But check out the README on GitHub, it'll give you a quick overview of the features. Did bugged moves, like Focus Energy get fixed?
The romhack overall is very light on the bugfixes, but actually yes, that is one example of a bug that I addressed.
Can I glitch Mew, or is there a special way to get him in your romhack?
Yes, a static Mew battle has been added in Cinnabar Mansion. But you can still perform the old Mew glitch.

Small thing - can you make the 3rd starter's ball disappear when you come back to get the pokedex? Like another trainer came and got it?
You know, that's an interesting idea. I'm going to add that to my list. Implying Oak took it, right? Although, I'm not sure if it would've been the case that he took that specific Pokeball. Agatha for example mentions how Oak used to be stronger/etc. in their youth, and now he's been "messing around with his Pokedex" or something similar in his old age. So perhaps Oak already had the third starter from years ago?
Nah, I like to think the games are basically copying the anime (especially pokemon origins).
There are many trainers from pallet, and we play as red. Red chooses first, Blue (Gary?) chooses second, and then Green (Leaf?) comes after the boys leave. As for the timing in the games, by the time Red (you) run to Viridian and back, we can imagine Leaf (the third trainer) has come to pick her (their) starter.
Ash then would come much later and get his pika pal.
In my mind, Red gets charmander, Blue wants to outdo him so he takes squirtle, and Leaf takes bulbasur. That being said, taking whatever you want is fine; you're essentially playing as a trainer from Pallet, and you can assume any role you want (even just be you).
Another fun idea would be if in Red, your rival chose the stronger one, Blue, your rival chose the weaker one, then in Green, you didn't have a trainer battle (but for the sake of gameplay, you can still choose whatever starter you wanted).
That way, three players could pick up the three pack of games and literally be rivals. Would be kind of cool. Though... Green would have to find a solution for the rival battles? Eh, maybe it's all too much.
Anyway, just having the pokeball disappear would add a bit to the story / world building, so that'd be cool.
#rant: It makes me wonder how could someone get an Eevee (and I'm convinced Pokemon Yellow is just fan service).
Oh, I see. But the games came first, so that stuff wouldn't apply, especially the Ash/Pikachu part. Yellow Version is a slight re-imagining of Gen 1 through the lens of the anime, which is why the starter selection is replaced with Pikachu. i.e., there technically isn't a world where Ash and Red coexist.
It's true that the third trainer girl (Blue is her canonical name, while your rival's is Green, which is why I swapped the default names in the name selection) would have chosen the third, but she was never implemented in these Gen 1 games. So I think it might be weird to shoehorn her in and make the 3rd ball disappear, and never have her show up in-game.

Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee are cool games imo. I recommend them in general, if you haven't played them yet. It's provides a nice view of Kanto/the characters.

Ah, I think I found a bug which prevented the Oak battle from triggering! That sucks, I'd tested it but I just made a small mistake before releasing the final version. Thanks for bringing that to my attention! I'm going to release an update with the fix ASAP.

I disagree that its a bad design. There is a big difference between design (like gameplay and battle systems)and exaction(coding) The base design is still pretty much the same 9 generations later. It needed to be fleshed out more and coded better but its design is the reason Pokemon is the highest grossing Franchise of all time! And not by a small margin. Even with there flaws they are enjoyable games and still belong with the list of best games ever made.
