  • This video is going to show you how to repair cracks in plaster walls and ceilings. Repairing cracked plaster is very easy as long as you use the correct technique. In this video the crack is cut into a V shape, then brushed clean before it is dampened using clean water. It is then filled using Gyproc easi fill 20 which is a very easy to use filler that gives excellent results. The area is then sanded lightly before being primed with a coat of Zinsser 123+

    Another good tip to mention is if the wall is ready plasterboard and you have cracks (say where the joints are) you can poke a couple of holes through along the crack and then plug the holes with expanding foam to reduce the movement and it works a treat!! The same principle applies after this stage, score out the crack slightly to put a little bit of filler in :)

      Even though I didn't "dislike" nor am I a "hater". It's probably because the technique used for the repair never included any "strengthening" to the area, just a band-aid. Should have added a mesh like Tape or Screen product after filling crack, and apply product over that to give it strength. Also fastening on both sides of crack (if allowable) Especially in an area of Movement (what it appears to be at a doorway entrance - on the HINGE side - (Heavy-duty hinge too @2:18). Hence the reason for the crack in the first place. Also adding support/strength to the door jamb would help too. Maybe the first guy who put up the door didn't take that step?
      You want to add strength, not just a "band-aid", the area will be flexing throughout time with the door opening and closing. Hopefully it worked out for him in the long run? The rest of the work was good.

      It depends whether the cracks have stopped moving. In this property the cracks were settlement cracks, probably from when the flats were built 40-50 years ago. The Easi-fill is great for things like this and very easy to use.

    I agree the easyfill 20 was great to use and easy to sand.
    I opened a crack to about 6 to 8mm V shape.
    However 2 hours later the surface had cone a little concave like it had shrunk. No so much of a problem as I added a second filling (only a very tiny mix needed)
    What caused it to shrink? Plaster was about 8mm thick and I took the v groove down to the blockwork under neath.

      It's difficult making a video when the narration is added afterwards. Normally I talk through the job as I do it but because the acoustics were terrible in this flat I had to record the sound afterwards. This means that I have to get the audio and video in some kind of synchronised order, which means cutting out little bits of the video to match the audio. It's much easier if you use still photos because you can easily make the photo appear for as long as you want, but you can't do the same with video ;-)

    • @DelTangBrav
      @DelTangBrav 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ultimate Handyman It actually was brilliant you managed to get two sections of video joined - WITHOUT a jump cut. The only thing that gave it away was the little bit to the right of the crack that appeared to fill itself. I know the complexities of trying to edit video - wherever possible I always try to add the sound separately too.
      Incidentally don't think I'm avoiding subscribing - I'm already subscribed in another channel name.

      Normally I hit control D when I make a cut and it fades the two pieces together, but for some reason in the last few weeks that has stopped working, so now I have to drag the cross dissolve to the cut and the program works its magic!

    Great video. Every filler I have used always shrinks back a bit, so I have to overfill slightly, which can make for a lot of sanding down. Does easi-fill do that?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ForestCat
      I have not really filled any really deep holes with it yet, but it does not seem to shrink at all.
      One one wall I filled about 40-50 small scrapes and shallow holes and just ran the sander over the whole wall and it gave a perfect finish.

      a bit, but you only have to skim over it again it drys in about 4 hrs if you get the fast setting version its easy to rub down i used it for years its like the eight wonder of the world also another way is use some plasterboard adhesive first and then go over with easy fill the plaster board adhesive sets like rock but you cant paint it as it just peels off ,so PVA it and skim over with easyfill rub down and you have a permanent repair which will last forever

    Great video Utimate handyman as always. A plasterer once told me to use decorator's chaulk to fill in cracks as it is flexible so can withstand some minor movement. is the gyproc easi fill 20 a flexible filler? Thanks again for the excellent video

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +william cheung
      Thanks, Decorators caulk is good for minor cracks between surfaces that move such as between the wall and coving or door frames etc. I don't think the Easi-fill is flexible but it works well for damage like this as it's likely that the crack happened years ago due to settlement.
      Thanks for the comment

    • @mrman17
      @mrman17 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +william cheung Decorator's caulk is fine for places like around door frames, along skirtings and in corners (between walls and ceilings as well), as +Ultimate Handyman said.
      The problem is with bigger cracks like in this video - I don't think you'll get the same smooth finish, and can't rub it down level after.

    Just wondering why you don't use expanding foam to fill in the crack first and then use PVA before using filler?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no need to, this crack was not that deep. I rarely use PVA unless i'm going a huge area, most of the time just wetting the area will suffice.

      Thanks. Wasn't expecting a response as this video was posted awhile ago but appreciate it.
      Some use expanding foam all the time and pva the whole wall after filling and sanding which seems excessive, but each to their own I guess. I prefer filler and cover.

      No, I would not use plaster.
      I'm a fan of the Gyproc easi-fill, you can actually buy it ready mixed now especially for repairing wall damage.
      The best way to fill small scuffs etc. is using easi-fill and a filling knife. You can get it so smooth that it barely needs sanding afterwards.

    What do you do if the crack has turned into a bulge? So the surface is no longer flush/ flat where the crack is

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That normally means that the plaster has come detached from the wall behind. The only real fix for this is to knock off the loose plaster and refill the area, then sand it down and repaint. Just knock the bump first to ensure it sounds hollow, if it is solid, you might have a bigger problem.
