He also has a quick mind and a sense of humor to match . Although by no Means a wealthy man he also donates 10 percent of the money he makes to St. Jude’s hospital for Children!
I am 71 and I started to feel old😂 (what a fool!) what a lesson with this saxophone 🎷 player artist. I believe his soul is playing that music, Jazz🎉 bless you, how many people you have made them happy.
I was ten years older than you are now when I first met JD two years ago. Like you I felt old and ready to come in for a smooth landing . After hanging out with Johny I pulled back on the throttle and am now taking flight ❤
Oh this is splendid. I have the ultimate respect for this gentleman's willing to share music with people. He is certainly special. The girl on the bench is his number one fan from the onset. Thanks for sharing some of the beauty remaining in the human soul. His light shines.
Thats great. I play just enough harmonica that when someone sat in with my band and used my guitar, i would be able to play a few blues riffs on whatever.
Ill be 67 and have played Harmonica almost exactly 55 years too. I play jazz and classical on the chromatic harp and blues and folk on diatonic harp. Im still gigging and have made lots of friends and great memories. Keep playing!
I am 70 this year and I try to get out and play for SOMEONE every day. I go to parks, CVS, Wah Wahs! Anywhere. I did 40 years of gigs and some high profile concerts w famous people. But playing a request on the spot for one or a few people is more rewarding; the intimacy, the bond is real. It;s the joy of my life. Keep on keeping on bro, you never know who your music will touch deeply. It is truly a medicine for a sick world.
I agree except for one thing, the world is not sick. In fact the eight billion people on this planet probably live better lives now than any time in human history. Life is a constant struggle and that’s why the magic of music is so important. It’s the musical medicine for the soul. 🎼🏹
how could anyone walk passed without honouring him with some change? Bet nobody can play like him. Takes a lifetime of practise to make jazz like that seem easy. Overtime bet he has played in some good bands. Bravo. A life well lived.
He is also a song writer ( see my video post, Kisses That Shake The World) and professional photographer back in the day, among other equally interesting things ..
Thank you for this video, I am touched, what beautiful sounds🎷🎶 I hope he can celebrate at least his 100th birthday by playing a birthday song for himself, nice greetings from Berlin😊
Che magia questo video ❤. Nell’indifferenza totale questo signore crea delle improvvisazioni bellissime. Complimenti per aver colto e donato questo attimo di poesia 🙏
Sang along to ‘Smoke Gets in Your Eyes’ and ‘I’m in the Mood for Love’ at 73 makes me wonder if I’d been better off playing sax instead of Classical Guitar, oh well, I’ll just need a place to plug in, Segovia made it to 87, Love you Sax Man! You are the Muse!
Oh Supreme God, I Applaude You!! Your a Child of 7 years old! You are Just Fantastic. great Musician! Your tone, your improvisation, all sublime!! Eternal Glory to You, my brother!!!
I hope I'm still playing at 97. I hope I'm still alive at 97. One of my old saxophone player friends on his 96th birthday told me, "You know, I ate breakfast at the diner down the street. I ordered 3-minute eggs. Those bastards made me pay in advance."
Thanks for your helpful comment. I have about 30 or so videos of Johny D on my utube channel and a few of Leo at Verdi Square, a little park between Amsterdam and Broadway at the 72 Street subway station, featured in those videos which you might also enjoy.
He has great tone. Only another musician or artist can appreciate the time, the work, the practice it takes to make one note or more sound good. It only took him decades to sound naturally.
The song he played is called "Smoke gets in your eyes". You will know how great musician he is by listening to other versions of this beautiful song 😎👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
My first love as a young lad . Her first inital is B. Second inital is f. Last name Sax.Still to this day I am 73 now.........Play on my musical friend Take Care and Be Well
Thought those young girls were going to start dancing. I’m not young anymore but I certainly would have danced to Smoke gets in your eyes! Excellent sir ❤
I believe everyone, including the animals, and irrespective of what they are doing, appreciate and connect to JD and his music. He also plays one hell of a clarinet ❤️
The sax John plays was given to him over 50 years ago by Zoot Sims after John’s instruments were stolen! And now we are the beneficiaries. How’s that for doing things the right way!
´Yeahh, that´s cool man´....
The sax was given to John well over 50 years ago by Zoot Sims after Zoot heard that John's instruments were stolen from his car. Amazing how a misfortune got transformed in a blessing.
Ah, good old "Needle Park"; at W72nd & Bwy, Manhattan. "The Panic" there had largely left my old neighborhood of 20 years by the time I lived a block east at 112 W72nd & Columbus! A further block east and you're at the infamous Dakota Apartments, where Beatle John lived (and died), and Polanski filmed most of "Rosemary's Baby". Cross CPW and you're into 'Strawberry Fields', where 'nothing is real' still, and who knows what 'ad hoc' musical adventures might await you... Follow the pathway down through the timeless Bethesda Terrace and its 'Angel of the Waters' Fountain and on to the Central Park Boathouse, (where you could once have a ride in a real Venetian Gondola), and you'd presently arrive on the 'Upper East Side'; the stately reflecting pool of Conservatory pond with its pretty little model sailboats scudding about; and finally the big psychedelic payoff: the larger than life "Alice In Wonderland" bronze statue, its gleaming patina buffed by decades of children's Osh-Kosh clad butts; famed among other things for its depiction (by photographer Linda Eastman) on the cover of Jimi Hendrix's final studio album, "Electric Ladyland". All this in a leisurely walk of approximately 40 minutes in New York City. To live there was truly to inhabit a magical Art Gallery or Museum. Ofttimes I wish I'd never left...

Sweet old man.
We never know how many layers of experience and memories a person has until we seat with him to listen and learn.
Thank you Johnny !!
I will be 70 my next birthday, and have been playing harmonica since I was 14, for 55 years. Thus, my moniker. This fellow is wonderful!
And you’re not doing too bad yourself ❤
That’s a long time to be playing and a lot of music to have created. And a lot of joy!
Got to post and share your talent, c’mon !
