  • It has good examples and it is harder than modern books, I love it. It is called College Algebra by Rosenbach and Whitman. This particular version of the book was printed for the United States Armed Forces Institute. See below for other versions of this classic book. Currently as of writing this, it is super affordable, and tons of copies are available.
I found several copies online, see below.

I love old math books! When I wanted to review trigonometry I was able to find Trigonometry by Perlin (1959, 3rd printing) and was stunned. My high school and college trig books were different. Maybe they were good but the old books are “different.” I find them clearer and generally more concise. So now I stop at used bookstores and go to book fairs. I found Introduction to Mathematical Statistics by Hoel (Wiley: 1963 ed.) at a book fair. It contained the first cool proof I could follow.

Interesting how these old books feature the same math that we use today. It's like these mathematicians from the past are still able to speak to us through their old books and writings. I could probably still do the Algebra, although it's cool they had some sections on Interest and Annuities. When I took Algebra, they had us doing Logic stuff with P's and Q's.

The format of this book, with the numbered sections, reminds me of The Engineers' Manual by Ralph G Hudson.

Those old soft cover books were high quality and the paper did yellowed much slower, unlike the newer paperbacks. Newer paperbacks are made of recycled paper. Original paper found with these vintage books are much sturdier. Thank you for this book review. Amazing textbook! College Algebra is the backbone of all the higher mathematical sciences and this appears to be user friendly! But can you imagine taking math courses during the 1940's-1960s. No internet, no air conditioners (in most classes), and NO calculators. They used slide rulers!

I ordered this book a few months ago, just another version, not the armed forces institute reprint. Enjoying it very much, its already improved my factoring skills. It also goes into more details on complex numbers (such as how to take their roots), than you might find in a "standard" college algebra course. It even goes into cubic equations a little... Very nice old book.

All of your reviews of US Armed Forces Institute books remind me of:
    "Where have you been, soldier?!"
    "TRAINING, SIR!!"
    "What kind of training?"
"ARRRMY TRAINING, SIR!!", with apologies to the cast of "Stripes".
