This is a very real phenomenon- appreciate you covering it . When we got back from deployment I tried to have my soldiers listen to reason and not blow all their money on new cars. Long story short - the BN barracks parking lot was full of BMWs, Range Rovers etc. After about 3 months every week there would be tow trucks doing repos … 6 months later all the fancy cars were gone. One of my soldiers had a 17% interest rate on his car note . Another bought 2 cars but didn’t have money left over for insurance or basic necessities. (This same soldier didn’t realize he had signed a contract for 6 years of reserve duty after his active commitment)
This video brought back some memories for me. I went in the Army in 1983 as a Private E1, and by mid 1985 at Ft Bliss Texas, I was a Sergeant E5 living in the barracks with all the perks as you mentioned, no kids and very few bills, but making much less money than these soldiers today. And yes, I was that person that went out and bought me a brand new black Saab 900 Turbo and enjoyed life. I remember my monthly car insurance was more than my car note as a 20 year old Sergeant E5...Those were definitely the good old days. Especially when I was driving a much nicer and more expensive car than my company commander 😅😅

what about sign on bonuses? a lot of guys (including myself) look at the 50,000 sign on bonuses for the air national guard, and realize we can go in one weekend per month, get that 50k bonus and then over the years each time you get a bonus check put it straight on the car. makes it a lot more justifiable for us car guys who want a nice car without paying crazy amounts out of pocket.

Civilian number on rent is not reflective of a one bedroom apartment in this day & age for a decent area. Rent = $1,200 Groceries = $300 Civilian monthly expense closer to $2,200 *However, I love your food for thought for those entering the military. Keep being awesome & enlightening.
Bought a 2001 Ford Explorer in 2000, and you couldn’t tell me nothing. Back then the Mustang was in the E-3 starter pack. My payments were like $465 a month, gas was $1.76 a gallon and I still couldn’t afford it since my insurance was almost $200 a month. My take home after taxes was about $776 biweekly. I’m glad they didn’t have Chargers and Challengers back then, because I would’ve figured out a way. My roommate had to work part time at KFC just to be able to afford a Mazda 929, although he did the full 20 and now pulls six figures as a personal trainer. Back then we didn’t care about eating at the DFAC or hospital cafeteria because we were all from the trenches.
Financial education is super important, it's a very good idea that you do this kind of content. Especially for those young people who still do not have a well ordered list of priorities. As the great boxer Ringo Bonavena used to say, "Experience is a comb that life gives you, when you are getting bald". Saludos! P.D: 0:02 those eyes need a waiver 🤣
I forced it. lol. I definitely did. I actually clipped a part out of my edit saying there’s no where you can get a rent this low, but I thought it felt pretentious and uppity. So I cut it. Lol
I remember when we could walk into a bank and the loan officer would have the military pay scale on their desks ready to lock us in. I was one of those reckless E3s driving the new cars, but the deployments were jumping back then!
I see junior Sailors driving some wild vehicles, even talking with some its possible to pull off, but affording this off a single income and some aren’t married so they’re living in the barracks is wild
Guilty as charged. I was an E-3 pulling up to my first duty station back in 2018 with my 2015 Camaro SS, however interest rate was 3% and my payments were $500 a month so it was doable for me at that time. Today, I'm not sure how the new junior enlisted make their payments. Higher interest rates are more common now.
FACTS!!!!! You are so right!!! Hell, I was one of those young irresponsible sailors, having a nice car living in the barracks! Those were the days!🤣😅😂🤣😅
Not everybody. Some people get bonus for join. From $10,000 to $50,000 in some case $80,0000. And they pay cash or a large downpayment for these cars. And most of the time retention bonous for signing or extending contracts. So dont forget to mention that too.
This car thing happens FAR too often... Seriously young people, just stop. Look up the opportunity cost, it could be north of $1M saved (after 40 years). Great video btw.
You just described my nephew 🤦🏾♀️ He is a reservist and works too but pays 1200 for a 2018 Audi. Insurance included…. He’s 21 years old but lives with his mom.
Heyyy my boy had a Challenger let’s goooo. I got one too now. Some of my veteran friends are telling me I should keep that in the garage and drive my 95 Cherokee to work once I’m operational as a FTA. Being 30 and having an expensive car is different than having one at 18-19 lol
Ive been in the Airforce for 3 years and im an E-4 and yea if your living in the dorms buying that car you could end up broke but if your off base collecting BAS and BAH and your not just splurging money your good I have a scat I have a nice apartment and im still saving a lot of money to put towards making an investment in real estate even when I did have my car in the dorms I was good it just depends on your own financial situation tbh
I was one of those junior enlisted with a challenger. It wasn’t too bad honestly. I also didn’t party much and I went on every deployment I could. My car was paid off in 4 years. Also my guilty pleasure was buying cars so there’s that
honestly if you're young and dumb and have nothing but a phone bill to pay for. go out and get you that scat if you can make the ends meet! military pays BAS and BAH. plus uniforms, a standard military members should reasonably only have to pay for a phone bill, internet bill and BX cases of beer. if you're making 3000.00 a month figure 300 for internet and phone at the highest levels. if you can manage a $700 used scatpack payment and 300 insurance you still have 1700 beer and gas money! no bdubs every night but you have a nice ride.
Hi Jody I hopes this comment reaches you in good health . First of all thankyou for taking that extra mile explaining everything throughout. I was born and educated in India . I finished my masters in Social Work this year and got my green card this month I am looking forward to join airforce Asap I get to newyork . I really wish you could be my recruiter. Anyway you got any suggestions for me?
I’ve always followed one rule: if I can’t pay cash for it twice, I can’t afford it. Never borrow money for a car even if you can make the payments I’ve seen so many of my battle buddies (Army here) blow all of their money on crap they don’t need. I’m not criticizing them for enjoying some of the money, but good god they acted like they had to spend as fast as possible in order to have even a little bit of fun. Like spending money was a competition But I’ll say this: if a service member saves every penny possible for three years and wants to buy a brand new Charger V8 scat pack, if they have enough to pay cash and choose to do so, then have at it
Meanwhile, you got the officers applying this same principle to Porsches and Corvettes 😂 I had a friend who had a BMW M4 which he bought from the money he saved all when he mowed lawns and did jobs when he was growing up, but nobody else knew that. Apparently everyone in the barracks envied him 😂
That’s the thing. Some members have additional incomes, or they have good investments they can pull money from. We don’t know everyone’s financial situation, so there’s always the off chance those young people can actually afford the car. But 9 times out of 10, it’s a bad purchase.
@@Jodywithawhy you’re right, and the issue of buying cars you can’t afford needs to be changed. Dodge specifically is really feeding this habit because they made it super easy for anyone to go to a dealership sign a high interest loan and walk away with a nice car. So people with lower incomes and poor credit scores wanting to drive a nice car can easily be tricked with the “it only costs x amount up front, and then pay y amount later” Also, could you make a video on what cars to buy for service members at each level of service and how to negotiate car deals? bc I’ve seen and heard too many stories of young servicemen go to the shady car dealerships and get absolutely ripped off for a used money pit of a vehicle. I feel like it would genuinely help servicemen with their finances
If I’m correct they have to lower any pre existing loan payment you have to under 6% once you join the military …if that is still the case and applies to auto loans as well, then if you buy the car you want before joining they’ll have to lower that 15%+ auto rate to 6%. You’d save a lotta money and still have no living expenses so some ppl might actually do it as a finesse
Jody “how do you get Scientific Applications Specialist” in the Air Force, besides requirements like the minimum requirement of the mechanical and electrical scores. How many of those jobs open up annually? It seems like the one job I can’t find out any more information on, secretive, probably.
It’s very rare. They don’t have a big manning problem, so they’re never really available for hire. It’s all about timing, but you never know when that time is. So more about luck I guess
Bought cash cars until I was 31 lol I bought land cows and invested a lot trying certain businesses shit was tough!!! I definitely snatched me something fresh a few months ago
While I agree that the military should have a financial literacy program. Have you been in the military? When I was in the military we had BAQ, separate rations, and COLA(cost of living adjustment pay) for those of us who just happened to be assigned to bases/units that didn’t have adequate housing. Those who live on base are not paying rent, electricity, medical bills and the family medical was covered also. I’m not saying service members should run out and get expensive cars, nah, save and invest. But you are capping just a little.
Never understood why people spend that much on a scatpack, something like a Camaro SS or mustang GT is a lot cheaper and you could tune it and bolt ons only gonna cost around 36-45k total that’s like 15k you saving…
Speak for yourself… I was a sgt in San Diego making 3800 every 2 weeks (since got out) and had an e commerce business netting 4-8k monthly depending on the month. That didn’t include my wife’s income as well. Just because someone is in uniform doesn’t mean they’re broke… also not everyone is single and living in the barracks.
Outside the military, it is also true that not everyone decides to first purchase a home, then move on to starting a big endeavor via having kids first. Instead, in this era, renting a home and living via paycheck to paycheck is shaky enough decision in the checks and balances department. Renting is for college bound or single individuals who have a plan moving forward in life. Someone owning a house next to a beach or other forms of " success" always includes keeping an eye on ones checks and balances. Some are rich and broke at the same breath just to keep his or her appearance in their respective endeavors. Good day now.
THis has been going for a looooong time. When I was juniorE-4 during the Fast and Furious era, we all wanted the cars in the movie. I got a custom 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse, My payment was $500 a month and I would ultimately owe $34,000 on the loan. At that time I lived in the barracks and had no bills and insurance was cheap. Was I broke? Yes, but back then it was either a car note or spend up all my money in TJ or some club over the weekend. People have to understand that a kid straight out of high school just wants to have fun, party, meet girls, and in the late 90s and early 2000s, it didnt cost much to do any of those things. IWe'd have girls over all weekend and all we paid for was the liquor. You can NOT pull that off today, especially if a guy gets some girl pregnant
Thats why i bought a motorcycle i aint got no car payments. 🙏🏾🤷🏾😂 and gas is $60 a month to go to work 5 days a week. Financially good for you too. The key thing is to use your liabilities or try to turn them into an asset to make money. Like investing into a car thats 5k and using the said car to go to work and save up 5k to recover the cost of getting that car plus more down the road.
As long as you don't buy brand new, you should be fine. But not a Scat. Get a 2015 Challenger RT with good to "okay" miles and put an exhaust on it. Insurance will be cheap as fluff. Or if you really want to save, then just buy an '09-'14 model. Even the SRT8 of those previous years will run you about $15k-$17k. Under 70,000 miles will be in the low $20k's though. I'm not in the military but I did the same thing, but with an "everyday'' car and couldn't afford to keep it. Using better car strategies, I now have a fifth gen Camaro SS. Which cost way less in insurance and the note.
I joined end of 2022 E3 as of now and buying a new car is definitely doable after joining just gotta have a bit of patience and discipline with your money. I bought my 2023 BRZ for 34k after tax, title, and registration brand new. I also took advantage of the dfac at tech school and not going out a lot spending a lot on food since no matter how much u get at the dfac it’s still coming out your check. At the end of my tech school which was like 5 months I saved almost 15k since basic to put down an 11k DP on the car. At the end when I got the car and went to my first duty station I even had a good amount of money to play around with for new car parts. Also if just like a car guy like myself and really wanted a sports car I promise you’ll find a way to afford it just depends how bad u want it. You don’t need the brand new scat and I’m pretty sure u could probably find a Daytona or maybe an older scat for as much as I paid for my Subaru brz. My buddy did the same thing with a used bmw 440 for 36k.
If you can't buy 4 with cash you can't afford one, that is my rule. I have 3 vehicles, and when I bought each one I could buy 4 of each one with cash. But hey, keep having car payments and give your money to the bank if you want so the bank can pay me interest.
THere are a lot of Girls that see them Millitary guys as a way to get out of house and situation they live in, all kinds of girls around the barracks and clubs, just being able to get into housing or an apartment that could be nicer then she has ever had lived in, plus furnish it. Shop at the commisary, she wont mind him with the expensive car loan for the car she will most likely start driving, and she may have a roster of guys who can help with the other bills. BUt seriously, there are realationships that do work out and the couples retire from the millitary.
Now I could be wrong and if so please correct me but wouldn’t it be smarter to buy a car before health insurance only because it allows you to get to where you need to be in order to make money? Now I’m not talking about something like a scat it’s more of a in general type of thing.
600 dollers for car insurance, are you talking about monthly or year. because there is no one paying 250-600 for car insurance. the avg car insurance in the us is 800-1000 a year
I pay close to that for my 17 year old. I’m just going off of personal experience with young people. I’m in Texas as well and location matters. But your numbers sound way off. Unless you’re paying for only liability, $800-1000 a year sounds unrealistic for a young person.
I am 19 and in the military. I am attached to my grandparents car insurance, and we pay for the premium every 6 months upfront. I have to pay around 2000 every 6 months for insurance of my cut for Allstate. Which is around 300 dollars a month.
Wouldn't it also be smarter just to buy used. personally thats what i was taught since I got old enough to think about cars and honestly I've never seen it as a problem. We got things like carvana and carmax if dealerships dont have them on site. I could be wrong tho
My car insurance even with history is 390 damn near $400 and that's with USAA. I would've just been on my moms but I'm in a different state so I'm unable to. i'd say just learn how to budget properly don't get no crazy expensive car. Do that when you like E5/E6 even then you don't (need) no crazy car. You just need something to get from A-B, but 🤷🏾♂️
Bro how did you skip over BAH? Depending on the state thats more than your base pay, my BAH per month out of NY is over 4k alone...mind you BAH is NON Taxable income
Orrrrr just don't pay interest on anything and only buy cash.... ya know, like actually smart people do. I'm 21 with 2 cars paid off cash a bmw and a camaro SS with enough for a nice house down payment. Cmon people. Government steady has yall wasting the most important years of your lives, couldnt imagine that.
Hey man, I have a question about the Air Force. I'm 14 and was looking to join, but my vision has been on a decline and since your a recruiter I wanted to know more about how a waver would work and if i could get one in the future and how. Also, the eyesight limit for glasses with the air force. I'm asking mostly cause if I can't join the air force, the only other 2 that I was looking at that would take me with my eyesight is the Army and Marines. I was asking to know if there was a chance of still joining the USAF
Waited a couple of months before my med board to buy my car and I did but I also was awarded 100% from the va at 4084$ then went and got a weekly paying job averaging 1200-2200 a week after taxes lol just be patient new joes.
Random question... I'm going to be enlisting in about a year. Ive been healthy and fit all my life, but I have never been able to smell all my life. I am not diagnosed with anything, and it doesn't affect my health at all. Would this disqualify me from the air force or could this be worked around? And would this disqualify me from any maintenance job specifically?
It is disqualifying, I just don’t know how the waiver process works for it. Like what you would need to provide in order to get a medical waiver. I would recommend reaching out to a recruiter and see if they can help.
😂😂😂😂😂😂 Damn I remember I went on deployment and almost bought a built to my spec 2010 Mstang GT. It was like 47k with 2k down. He's not lying about the price I was looking at $900 not including insurance which was 400 as an E-2 I just saved my deployment money and settled for a 06 GMC Envoy Denali it was like 9k and I had money left over for a sub woofer setup.
Wait the military gives 1800 a month and it’s split in two? I make a bit more than that for two weeks and the month 😢? Is that an actual estimate? 900 a pay check?
Also depends if your in the dorms or not with no dependents or single. Once u move out the dorms u see more money but technically you’ve been getting it it’s just been taken out your check the whole time for food since your gonna be on meal card to eat at the dfac if your in the dorms

what about sign on bonuses? a lot of guys (including myself) look at the 50,000 sign on bonuses for the air national guard, and realize we can go in one weekend per month, get that 50k bonus and then over the years each time you get a bonus check put it straight on the car. makes it a lot more justifiable for us car guys who want a nice car without paying crazy amounts out of pocket.

Civilian number on rent is not reflective of a one bedroom apartment in this day & age for a decent area.
Rent = $1,200
Groceries = $300
Civilian monthly expense closer to $2,200
*However, I love your food for thought for those entering the military.
Keep being awesome & enlightening.
Hey, thanks for the advice. I just got my airman’s coin today. Flight 458
Ayeee. Congratulations. Glad to see you completed it. 🙌🏽🙌🏽

2.4k a month as an army men is wild. I make 3k in a week as a 19 year Old
Guilty as charged.
I say just save the money until you can buy in full
Ain’t nothing wrong with that. 🙌🏽
Or use the interest from your savings to finance the car and keep your money after it’s paid off

You forgot to add Meal deduction that comes out of paycheck monthly.
And the h o e fee
Because after basic training you have like 5k saved up then they buy the car
With the bonus they give out now man they can go there with 60k off the rip
This car thing happens FAR too often... Seriously young people, just stop. Look up the opportunity cost, it could be north of $1M saved (after 40 years). Great video btw.
You just described my nephew 🤦🏾♀️ He is a reservist and works too but pays 1200 for a 2018 Audi. Insurance included….

The smart E3 will be collecting BAH on top of that for an apartment with roommates. Which the rent will only take about 25% of that BAH.
You can live off base as an E-3?
Heyyy my boy had a Challenger let’s goooo. I got one too now. Some of my veteran friends are telling me I should keep that in the garage and drive my 95 Cherokee to work once I’m operational as a FTA. Being 30 and having an expensive car is different than having one at 18-19 lol
It’s more of a public opinion thing. You can do whatever you want fr
So you sent thousands of dollars to barely use something? What's the logic behind that
@@SkiMaskWay364 what are ya talking about wagwan?
Ive been in the Airforce for 3 years and im an E-4 and yea if your living in the dorms buying that car you could end up broke but if your off base collecting BAS and BAH and your not just splurging money your good I have a scat I have a nice apartment and im still saving a lot of money to put towards making an investment in real estate even when I did have my car in the dorms I was good it just depends on your own financial situation tbh
Thanks for sharing. 💪🏽
Used to see all the news toys on post pop right when we got back from a deployment.
72 months is average now a days. 84 months is insane tho
I was one of those junior enlisted with a challenger. It wasn’t too bad honestly. I also didn’t party much and I went on every deployment I could. My car was paid off in 4 years. Also my guilty pleasure was buying cars so there’s that
The deployments help offset a lot. So it makes buying expensive car a little more reasonable
@@Jodywithawhy right! It really did

Ian gon lie a7 gets a pass
honestly if you're young and dumb and have nothing but a phone bill to pay for. go out and get you that scat if you can make the ends meet! military pays BAS and BAH. plus uniforms, a standard military members should reasonably only have to pay for a phone bill, internet bill and BX cases of beer. if you're making 3000.00 a month figure 300 for internet and phone at the highest levels. if you can manage a $700 used scatpack payment and 300 insurance you still have 1700 beer and gas money! no bdubs every night but you have a nice ride.
Im an E-3 stationed in California I’ve been deployed and I get bah. I bought a $7500 car and I have no kids or wife nothing so I thinking I’m chilling
BAH? You don’t have to live on base as an E-3?
There’s some bases in cali that only have dorms for tech schoolers, and all permanent party lives off base.
@6:30 Why did you mention health insurance? While in the military, your health care is taken care of.
I was talking about a civilian buying a car before health care.

Guy I graduated basic with bought a 2012 Camaro SS and he couldn't drive the thing most of the time he owned it
I have $300k in cars as a SSgt, am i cooked? I get special duty pay
I’ve always followed one rule: if I can’t pay cash for it twice, I can’t afford it. Never borrow money for a car even if you can make the payments
I’ve seen so many of my battle buddies (Army here) blow all of their money on crap they don’t need. I’m not criticizing them for enjoying some of the money, but good god they acted like they had to spend as fast as possible in order to have even a little bit of fun. Like spending money was a competition
But I’ll say this: if a service member saves every penny possible for three years and wants to buy a brand new Charger V8 scat pack, if they have enough to pay cash and choose to do so, then have at it
can you ame a video on air force school requirements it's seem like the only military that has college as a mandated thing
Meanwhile, you got the officers applying this same principle to Porsches and Corvettes 😂
I had a friend who had a BMW M4 which he bought from the money he saved all when he mowed lawns and did jobs when he was growing up, but nobody else knew that.
So people with lower incomes and poor credit scores wanting to drive a nice car can easily be tricked with the “it only costs x amount up front, and then pay y amount later”
Also, could you make a video on what cars to buy for service members at each level of service and how to negotiate car deals? bc I’ve seen and heard too many stories of young servicemen go to the shady car dealerships and get absolutely ripped off for a used money pit of a vehicle. I feel like it would genuinely help servicemen with their finances
Holdup! They do have health insurance, TRICARE!
Man I remember them days of being young and dumb… Them allotments was tearing my ass up, lol
😂😂😂. Mine too. Lol
That is true. It’s called the service member civil relief act. Also interest prior to service will be lowered to 6%
Jody “how do you get Scientific Applications Specialist” in the Air Force, besides requirements like the minimum requirement of the mechanical and electrical scores.
Normal dodge drivers don’t pay taxes on their “extra” income, if it is their car in the first place.
That’s fair. I was referring more to a new car, I could’ve clarified a bit more.
I had a Hellcat while active Duty, I also have a buiness where I made $600 a day from while I was active so ehhh
i’m still buying it

I already bought mine lol
@blueardyn thank you for a realistic number. Also, is your car a $35K car??
Wouldn't it also be smarter just to buy used. personally thats what i was taught since I got old enough to think about cars and honestly I've never seen it as a problem. We got things like carvana and carmax if dealerships dont have them on site. I could be wrong tho
Me who’s gonna wait. Until I have the money in full 😭😭😭

I was using the example as if they were still living in dorms/barracks.
Orrrrr just don't pay interest on anything and only buy cash.... ya know, like actually smart people do.
What job did u get? Sweet
@@Jodywithawhy I kinda figured it was disqualifying. The current recruiter I'm talking to said it wasn't and I had a hard time believing him lol

Wait the military gives 1800 a month and it’s split in two? I make a bit more than that for two weeks and the month 😢? Is that an actual estimate? 900 a pay check?
Roughly about $900. You may see pay checks range from about $700-$900 because of rank and time in service.
Also depends if your in the dorms or not with no dependents or single. Once u move out the dorms u see more money but technically you’ve been getting it it’s just been taken out your check the whole time for food since your gonna be on meal card to eat at the dfac if your in the dorms
Aw men. I thought they were balling. This is not a good look.
He’s giving an example towards people who’s low in rank and low in time in service.
Brand new members are not balling. After about 4-6 years in with proper budgeting and financial education, you can live pretty good.
