That was a very cool experiment. It seems like a good product to save a sketchbook with paper that isn't the best, although ideally I suppose it would be nice to have good paper to start with. It would last forever, that pot of ground, with being able to be diluted. I really love that size sketchpad, and the proportions are super for a portable landscape sketchbook, so I see why you chose it. I have some nice watercolour paper, and you've inspired me to try to make a pocket sketchpad in those dimensions. Your videos are always inspiring.
Thank you! That experiment really worked better than I thought it would. I'm glad I bought the smaller size of the watercolor ground. I think you're right that it is going to last a while. I'm excited to see what your pocket sketchpad will be like! After experimenting with making some simple ones today, I can really see the appeal of just making one exactly to your specifications.
I’ve tried both the transparent and white watercolor ground. They are both disappointing. It’s probably best for priming surfaces other than paper for watercolor painting, like wood or metal. I’d just repurpose that sketchbook for gouache or acrylic paintings.
Yes, I would like to try it on some non-traditional surfaces and see what results I get.
1000 grit automotive sandpaper may help. It's common to sand down primed surfaces. Don't see why WC ground would be any different than gesso 🤷🏽♀️ Any big box store with automotive stuff should have the 3M fine grit sandpaper. I was shopping for WC ground for this same purpose. Thanks for subscribing! Sanding it as if it's gesso makes perfect sense. I wonder why that didn't occur to me (and why they didn't mention it as an option on the container). I was thinking of trying this watercolor ground on some wood, undiluted, and I think sanding would really help to create a nice surface!
